Inspirational, Uplifting and Encouraging Bible Verses: - Psalm 119: Eyes Opened to a New World View

Updated on December 8, 2013

“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.” Psalm 119:18NIV

When I was a kid, my favorite football team was the Minnesota Vikings. In turn, Fran Tarkenton was my quarterback. My mom got me a book, his autobiography. I was about 11 or 12 years old. As I read through it, one thing I noted was that he kept talking about Jesus. How Jesus was his Lord, Savior, the whole ball of wax. Every few pages, he would bring up Jesus again. He would pray and ask Jesus for guidance, praise Jesus for blessings…..etc. I was a bit confused by it. Seemed that all Fran Tarkenton wanted to talk about was Jesus. Now I knew about Jesus, He was God’s Son, and I heard about Him every week in church. But, there was a difference here which I could not quite understand. To me, Jesus was big. To Fran Tarkenton, Jesus was huge. He was everything. Every aspect of life ended up pointing to Him. I finished the book, continued to be a Vikings fan and went on with my life.

Looking back, I now understand the difference. Fran Tarkenton saw Jesus through spiritual eyes that had been opened. I can see Him now too. I can see Him the same way. God “opened my eyes that I may see”. Fran Tarkenton does not know me; does not know he was my favorite or that I read his book. But that book planted early seeds which began to pry my eyes open.

Just the beginning of a long process. Stubborn eyes they were, took a long time.
