Online Bible Verses - John Chapter 10: Our good Shepherd is there to protect His sheep when we need help.

Updated on September 28, 2013

“Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.” John 10:7, 9-10NIV

We find within scripture a tendency to emphasize important points. Today that method is put into practice by Jesus.

The first two things to note in the verse set:

1. The word “again”: “Therefore Jesus said again”. So He is reiterating on a point already made. Wants to be sure His audience has heard and understands.

2. The phrase “Very truly I tell you”, which is another way of saying, “Really, truly, this is key. So listen up.”

It appears, then, that the intent is to convey critical information.

Let’s try to break it down. Who are the sheep? Those being cared for and led. The sheep are not the smartest bunch, and they tend to go astray. We are the sheep, and we need a shepherd. Jesus wants to be that for us, our Shepherd, referring to Himself as the gate. In this instance, He waits at the pasture entrance and lets the sheep in to where they will be saved. Saved from what? Saved from danger awaiting them outside their Shepherd’s protection; and also saved from their own ignorance, stubbornness and stupidity.

Kept safe until the danger passes.
