Full Moon Magick for Beginners and Pros

Why is Full Moon Magick So Powerful?

What is it about a full moon that is so powerful? Perhaps it is simply the beauty of the full moon...perhaps it is the feelings and emotions that are stirred inside of us when we gaze up at the full moon in all of her bright, golden glory. She lights up the ebony-black night sky with her undeniable warmth and blissful mystery.

Every phase of the moon can be used in magick or ritual-work, but in this article we will be talking specifically about full moon magick. The full moon is most useful for timing spells that involve sending out and drawing to yourself things such as love, sex, health, protection, and any type of spell that needs a culminating boost.

Full Moon Magick: The Basics for Beginners

We'll begin with some full moon magick basics for beginners. The full moon rises at sunset and sets at dawn, usually about 14 to 17 days following the new moon. Obviously witches and wiccans celebrate each full moon, so in all there are usually 13 full moon celebrations or what we call esbats. These are considered lesser holidays to the 8 solar sabbats.

Full moon magick can be used for many intentions including but not limited to love, sex, health, artistic endeavors, decisions, children, dreams, families, knowledge, legal issues, motivation, protection, competition, romance, money, psychic power, and self-improvement and much much more. The full moon is also related to many mother goddesses and is often called Sekhmet's moon by Tameran or Egyptian Wiccans/witches. The sabbat that the full moon is most closely related to is the Summer Solstice, also known as Litha or Midsummer.

While some relate full moon magick more closely to fire energy, others relate full moon magick to water energy. The full moon has a massive pull on the oceans and tides, and many times people will claim that other people "go crazy on the full moon". This has been proven. If you go to any police station in town and ask them about the full moon, they will indeed tell you that crime seems to rise on full moon nights. My theory on "full moon craziness" is this: if the moon has such a pull on water such as the oceans, why wouldn't it have a pull on our bodies too? Our bodies are made up of 60% water, so it only makes perfect sense to me!

Offerings to be given at the full moon could include flowers, wine, and holy water. The tarot card most associated with full moon magick is The Sun. Think about what full moon magick means to you. If the moon is full, it obviously means that it is at its most save your most intensely needed spells and ritual-work for the full moon. Don't forget that you can also use the full moon's light to cleanse your crystals and stones, and bless a bowl of holy water or even cleanse and charge a scrying mirror. The full moon's light can be used to empower almost any magickal tool or item. Don't forget to honor your mother goddess on the full moon...we wouldn't have full moon magick without her.

Full Moon Magick: For the Pros

So you know the basics of full moon magick but you're looking for some new ways to use full moon magick. You're the pro...or at least you're passed the beginner phase. Are you a full moon?

If you're passed the beginner stages, maybe you're ready to open the spiritual door to the otherworld. To increase your psychic power, use full moon magick to your advantage. Here are some ways in which to use full moon magick in opening your third eye:

A simple full moon meditation, using incense such as lotus, bay, althea, juniper, or rose, can aid in opening your third eye and really unlocking the door to higher spiritual awareness. If you are further along in your practice, it is probably safe to assume that you are not using Full Moon Magick to attract love or money, but you are probably wanting to become more in tune with the forces of nature around you and merge with the goddess' power. At least this is where I find myself at this point in time (if I'm biased, I apologize). Remember to ground, center, and envision a protective circle or bubble around you before going on any type of spiritual journey. Whether you're performing a shamanic journey into the faerie realm or a journey into the otherworld, always protecting yourself is advisable and wise. Use the full moon's power to aid you in your journey. You could always use the full moon as a guiding light of sorts to lead you back home should you get swayed from your path along your journey into the other realms.

Healing spells are also quite powerful using full moon magick. Invoke some of the moon goddesses and water goddesses in your healing rituals, take a ritual full moon bath, and remember to leave an offering to give something back to the moon once you have used the full moon magick.

Blessings Always.

Beautiful hub Kitty and the video of the 'supermoon' was indeed awesome!

It's very interesting about talking to police officers in relation to crime on a full moon. For so many years, when I was caring for people with different forms of dementia, we always found that they became more distressed and aggitated at the time of the full moon. Of course the doctors used to say that it was all nonsense until two of the most experienced and senior nurses on night shift did a year long study. The peaks of distress/agitation were significantly higher at full moon times. Other considerations were also taken into account such as a patient who had an infection, was new into the care scheme or had any other underlying medical issue. The results were the same - high peaks at full moon time. Now although the study wasn't long enough and scientific enough for release into any journal, the doctors and other sceptics were very intrigued by the findings. But surely this should make sense to them? After all we get the word 'lunatic' from lunar for the moon? And as you have said, our body is full of water as is the brain. If the moon affects the tides, then it must have some effect on us.

Anyway, enough of my ramblings. I thouroughly enjoyed this hub - wonderful explanations and the artwork was stunning! I have to say that I enjoy nothing more than going to bed and having a beautiful moon showing through the window!

    Voted up everything except funny!!

Thanks for this hub Kitty. It is very reassuring. I have a lot of crystals and I always put them under the full moon to charge and cleanse them. This is what I find to work best for me. I am drawn to the full moon and like to go camping and hiking during the full moon. I don't need my flashlight and it's a nice treat to use the moon as a natural light. It seems like more of Mother Nature's creatures come out when it's full too. That's also a nice treat to see them out in the wild :-)
