Gaining Victory Over Losing Heart

Gaining Victory Over Losing Heart

“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary , but what is unseen is eternal.”

II Corinthians 4 : 16-18

Is losing heart a sign of the times ?

Losing heart is manifested not only in open rebellion, in quitting or giving up but in giving in to temptation or attitude that dishonor the Lord. It can be found in the christian who moves on in life :

- But in bitterness or resentment

- By going through the motion by living a double-life in hypocrisy

- By becoming indifferent to spiritual matters

- By focusing on the wrong things

- By constantly being afraid or conscious

- By being content with just coping or enduring.

Ways of Fighting Losing Heart

1) There will be times when we will be tempted to lose heart but we must fight it. As we walk through our earthly journey , there will be circumstances we will encounter that will disappoint us, will crush us, will break us, Paul is encouraging us not to lose heart. At the same time he could be encouraging himself. Apostle Paul like many other men of God , had learned the art of encouraging himself. Paul fought of losing heart by focusing on what he had in Christ:

- A glorious ministry which serves as an instrument for saving and transforming lives.

- A glorious treasure found in his relationship with Christ. Our relationship with Christ is our greatest treasure.

- A glorious future in eternity with God. There is a very glorious future awaiting us all believers in Christ.

At the same time Paul remained realistic about life.

2) There will be daily deterioration going on outwardly – but we must grow in strength and beauty inwardly. There is no such thing as fountain of youth in the physical sense , but there is a fountain of youth in the spiritual sense. It is found by those who are inwardly renewed by beholding, contemplating on the glory of Lord JesusChrist day by day. It involves a daily habit of turning to the Lord , spending time with Him in faith, in prayer, seeking Him through the Scriptures and worship. It involves a daily cultivation of our soul’s relationship with the Lord.

3) There will be afflictions, they are light considering the glory awaiting us as children of God. Paul does not deny the presence of afflictions . We Christians have Someone who died for us, Someone who lives in us, Someone who will take us to eternal glory. Paul is not making light of our afflictions . He is making a comparison to the glory that awaits. As it is written in Romans 8:18-19:

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed.”

Paul is expressing a conviction that none of christian’s sufferings under the will of God is meaningless. In eternity, we will find out that our light afflictions for Christ have produced or achieved for us an eternal weight of glory.

4) There will be temporal and eternal matters to face everyday of our lives. Everyday we are faced with the choice : what are we going to value more, the temporal things or things eternal. Paul is not saying we pay no more attention to the material and visible things. He is exhorting believers to put greater weight on things that are unseen.

This is not a simple thing to do for us who are living in the modern era where people focus more on visual things. How then we do appreciate the invisible like God and Heaven . It takes quite an effort to fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen. But by the grace of the Lord JesusChrist we can persevere and be victorious. Just fix your eyes on Christ daily and never lose vision of the Kingdom of God.

My Pastor has Parkinson's Disease. He is an amazing example. He always says I am not focusing on the disease I am focusing on Jesus who is much greater than any disease. I am focusing on Jesus above everything, the disease is the lowest thing on my list of thoughts. Jesus is the focus to raise our heart and mind. We are children of the King, destined to be with Him for eternity..thank you for the reminders.
