Getting in Touch With Your Spirit Guides

Updated on November 29, 2011

What are Spirit Guides?

Spirit guides are entities we’ve made a contract with on the Other Side before beginning a new life. These spirits are there to protect us, guide us and ensure that we stay on the right path in fulfilling the life blueprint we made for ourselves. They communicate with us most often through gut feelings, dreams and synchronicities, but with a little practice we can learn to communicate with them in more direct ways.

How to Connect

There are many techniques for making contact, including meditations and visiting a professional psychic, but here’s a really simple method that worked well for me. Lie down and put yourself into a relaxed state by doing some deep breathing. Envision yourself surrounded by a pure white light where no negativity is allowed. Then set the intention that only your spirit guide is allowed to enter into that light. This protective measure is very important so that you do not invite any other random entities to contact you.

When you feel relaxed and safe in your sacred bubble of light, call upon your spirit guide. How do you call upon someone whose name you don’t know? Many times a name will pop into your head if you ask for it. If this happens, just go with it no matter how silly it seems. Your guides really don’t care what you call them and will answer to any name. If no name comes to you, just address it as “Spirit Guide” until you get more comfortable communicating with this spirit. You will eventually get a name.

Next, ask him or her to touch you in a specific area. When I did this for the first time, I asked my guide to touch me on my left ear. I told him that would be our special signal from now on so that I’d know it was him and not some other entity. It took about 30 seconds, but I finally started to feel a vibration around my left ear, as if someone were waving a hand just millimeters from my skin. Then the sensation got stronger, spreading out beyond my ear to the left side of my head and down my shoulder and arm. It was a warm, reassuring energy, and I had no doubt I had made a connection to my spirit guide. To this day, whenever he wants me to know he’s around, I feel a very strong presence on the left side of my body.

Once you make contact, try to determine if it’s a male or female energy and see if you can get an idea of what they look like. Often, an image will appear in your third eye, but don’t despair if that doesn’t happen right away. Once you get to know your guide, the different pieces of the puzzle will fall into place. You’ll develop an image of them in your mind and learn exactly what they are here to help you with. In the meantime, it’s wonderful to just feel their energies around you and get the reassurance that you are being assisted by the spirit world.

Multiple Guides

Once you have connected and feel comfortable with one guide, you may want to see if there are others. Since connecting with my master guide for the first time, I have made contact with three other spirit guides. They all serve a different guiding purpose in my life, and their energies feel distinctly different from one another. I’ve established a different code with each one, so they know exactly where to touch me to get my attention and let me know they’re around. I’ve got one guide who helps me with creative endeavors, one who helps me with psychic development and another who keeps me grounded, and I have a feeling that more guides may come and go in the future.

They're Here to Help

Some guides are only here for a brief time to help you through a crisis, while others are here for a lifetime. No matter how long they are with you, their sole purpose is to serve you. Being able to call upon them individually by name or as a group is a wonderful tool to have in your psychic toolbox. Don’t worry that you’re calling upon them too much or bothering them – it’s their job to help you and they are happy to do it!

I read this and followed the directions. It's unbelievable. A name for my guide kept coming into my head, then i fell a sleep and had a dream where I met my guide. I traveled. I am not making this up, i simply can't explain my entire experience after following the above directions. I'm afraid some would think i'm crazy. But thank you so much.

I'm glad you found it practical, because that's always my aim. I think so many people get turned off by overly complicated rituals in metaphysics -- me included. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!

A fascinating hub on contacting spirit guides. Not only that but the information is very easy to follow. I think what I like about it the most though, is that it is practical and sensible, some writers on spirit guides can tend to go off on one with unrealistic aims and goals for beginners.

Great hub + voted up + awesome!!
