Ghostly Sightings In Marlow And High Wycombe - Real Life Spooky Tales.
England is an ancient Country with tons of history myths legends and ghosts. With so many old buildings that are still standing today, its not surprising that many people have seen or felt a ghostly presence when they are staying at say, an old Coaching Inn, or ancient building converted into a hotel or home.
In fact its quite a common thing to hear of someone 'escaping into the night' so to speak purely because they have been touched by ghostly hands at 3 am!
Its amazing in this day and age that we still believe, and in fact see these ghostly figures.
So there must be something in it, mustn't there? I remember my first encounter with a ghost. I was walking through a dark alleyway at dusk. I saw a guy in front of me, he was wearing normal clothes, jacket trousers and so on. I must admit to thinking why is he strolling along so slowly when its raining?
I remember leaning down to get something out of my shopping bag, looked up and he was gone.
Nothing odd about that you may say, but......
There was no opening in the alleyway for at least another 300 ft! There was no way he could have disappeared unless......!
I remember running through the alley, towards my friend at the bus stop. 'What?' She yelled seeing my face.....
'Ghost' I wheezed trying to get my breath! I never forgot that experience I can tell you!
The ghostly Puritan.
Living in High Wycombe you can't get very far without having to climb a hill. No wonder its call High Wycombe!
A few years ago we lived up Cock Lane which is just outside the town. It was really steep trying to climb up there every single day.
I believe its a '1 in 3 ft' which means its pretty hard to clamber up with a pushchair and shopping!
One night, back in the 80's my husband had to go out. We didn't drive so he had to walk down the hill. A few hours later he walked back into the house, his face as white as a sheet!
Now he is one of the first to state 'There are no such things as ghosts, its all rubbish'!
So what did he see?
Walking up the hill there is a railway bridge, very narrow, and dark. On this particular night my husband was walking down the right hand side of the road, on the opposite side he could see someone walking adjacent to him. He could feel eyes staring at him, and he turned round, ready to smile at the person.
The smile froze on his face when he saw who or what was following him!
There, in the lamplight on the bridge stood a man wearing puritan clothing. At first my husband thought it was fancy dress. But his eyes......!
My husband starting to walk faster feeling really strange, and then at the end of the bridge he turned and....nothing. Nobody! The 'man' was gone.
There were no alleys, roads or turnoffs. He had just disappeared.
A few weeks later we heard other tales of the mysterious man wearing 'old style clothes' as some people called it.
He now believes in ghosts!
Cock lane has its share of other ghosts too. Evidently in 1980 and 1994, two ghosts were said to be haunting the lane.
1.A phantom woman dressed in grey
2. A witness saw a ghostly form gliding towards him from the area of an old gypsy camp.
There have been many sightings in and around High Wycombe. The most famous being The Golden Ball in the West of the town.17th Century parliamentarian Frances Dashwood was well known for hosting wild parties. Read more about it here :
10 Ghosts of England - Chris Charles
I recently sent out a request to people in the area and asked them if they ever had a ghostly experience, and would they mind sharing? The wonderful people of High Wycombe and Marlow didn't let me down.
These are all real life stories told in their own words.
We start with 'Chris' who says:
We've had strange goings on in our house, including both myself and my husband hearing my voice coming out of our TV/hi-fi speakers, does that count? 'I' said 'hello I must be going now?'. Cutlery moving in the kitchen, no-one there but dogs reacting, taps running in the middle of the night, and of course movement upstairs when we're both in the same room.
And My Dad and I for some years after she went would smell my mum's perfume at the same time. In our old house in High Wycombe things would go missing, a hedge-cutter once, and reappear a few days later in exactly the same place.
. Small things we put down to just being covered by something else. Also an alarm going off without any batteries in one night. I think that's me done! Oh no one more, my Dad is a room guide at Hughenden Manor and quite often he says the corner of the carpet is turned over in the library. The house has been shut all night, and also in the library is a large pair of irons for 'prodding' the fire, they fell without warning having been stood in the same place for years! He may have been late 70's then, but moved quickly!! Guess we're just a 'special' family.
My father has also seen my mum several times since she's died and so did a ticket-seller at Waddesdon manor who asked my dad if the lady with him also wanted a ticket. Dad said he was alone and the ticket-seller then described the lady who had been with him.
And Marie Yearwood also from High Wycombe, states:
Hi we had a few different things happen. I lived in a block of flats at lance way for around 5 years. Within that time my experiences were in explainable. I used to put my son down to sleep in his cot and he would wake up screaming the same time every night so I put a bible at the end of his cot and it stopped happening .
His toys use to go off by themselves . We would hear the sounds of feet dragging in the hall way at night , when my other half would sit up recording music the volume but would go up and down by itself . One night I was having a bath with the door open and I saw a shadow on the bathroom door which disappeared within seconds, and I can't find any explanation for these things happening . Hope this helps!
I also lived round the corner in Collingswood, and yes, the same thing happened with my son too! I remember someone telling me that Collingswood and Lance way were built on an old burial site! We didn't see a ghost, but when I was in the bathroom I constantly heard knocking on the door! Spooky eh?
A fascinating encounter with two different Spirits made me wonder if maybe, sometimes we experience Timeslips too?
Take Charlotte Farmers story:
Hiya Nell, A friend of my boyfriends came over one day looking pale and I joked have you seen a ghost ? He said yes I was talking with my mum in the kitchen only an hour ago and she looked out the window and started crying and screaming. He turned around and saw his granddad who died 2 years previous looking as real as flesh and blood doing the gardening. He ran to the back door opened it shouted granddad and he vanished.
And my experience was, I met and spoke to a man on the stairs at a friends house when I was 17. I'm 28 now and I've never seen the man again and he looked uncannily like her dad who died 6 years previous to when I saw him on the stairs.
Id never met him I just saw his picture. He didn't speak to me but looked at me and smiled and nodded at me when I introduced myself. We are still friends and are god parents to each others children which is why I believe I got the visitation is because we were to be lifelong friends.
Oh yea and he looked me right in the eyes and I thought at the time I was with a live human!
Louise Cook from Marlow recounts her story:
Hi Nell, my name is Louise and I have lived in Marlow for the last 18 months. I regularly travel by car between Marlow and Nettlebed along the Henley Road. One evening when I was returning to Marlow, a short way after the Mill End junction, a figure appeared right on the very edge of the road, it was just after a bend.
It made me jump and swerve as I thought I was going to hit the person, the person was frantically waving their arms in the air as if to warn me to slow down. I couldn't see an accident so I continued on my journey but my conscious got the better me and I decided to turn back and check all was well. Although I did not want to get out of the car, I thought if someone needed help I would pull over and call the police.
I drove back slowly and there was no sign of anyone at all. I turned back around at the Mill End junction and drove very slowly back towards Medmenham with my full beam on and there was absolutely nothing there. I have no other explanation for what I saw other than it was a ghost. The person I saw was an elderly lady with very white hair wearing a burgundy coloured jumper and blue skirt. I don't know if that is any help to you, this happened about 2 months ago and would of been about 8.30pm.
Dawny Smith stated that:
I see a ghost up West Wycombe of a young girl wearing a long white gown, going across a field. I've never been back since!
Janie Stephens-Barker says:
We have a ghost in our house, I see her regularly.
Our grand-daughter has seen her too, we call her the lady in grey, I do feel she is related to me though.
Gene Hunt states:
The Grey Lady is from Bisham, sometimes seen in the underpass.
Chris Buckland has another take on ghosts this is his story.
My uncle in Ireland built his house on a fairy ring, big whoops, could never lock the door and constant childlike stuff going on, things moving when you turn etc.
Doors constantly unlocking, doing diy and screws or tools would disappear as soon as his back was turned. That sort of thing.
Adele Hollingsworth says:
I saw a man dressed in green hospital scrubs walking up the hill between Marlow Bottom and Wycombe at aprox 1 am.
4 other people in car saw nothing but he was about 2 ft from the car. They all thought I was mental lol.
And Becca Stenning says:
I saw a lady walk behind one of my friends in the alley way that goes from chapel lane to pinewood road in sands. This lady walked behind my friend (I even remember telling my friend to move because someone was trying to get past) and then vanished as she carried on walking up the alley. Scared the crap out of me!
Sophie Rowan says:
Luna (my girlfriend) had quite a few good and bad ghosts, spirits, and possibly a poltergeist in her old house. One of the good spirits we describe as "spooky Victorian lady", which all of her family members have come into contact with at some point, either seeing her, smelling her or hearing her.
What we believe as the poltergeist sometimes took the form of her, but she didn't wear a veil and her face seemed slightly distorted. I started to get a panic attack, and long story short, after I began to feel better I get the feeling it was caused by the poltergeist.
We think it was the poltergeist because it looked like spooky Victorian lady, but without the veil, and it felt really bad. I slowly walked round to the extension with my glass of water, and luna could see it following me. That's pretty much what happened. Luna followed me to the extension to check I was okay and we both calmed down a little then went back to her room.
A ghostly story a bit closer to home!
The story that is closest to home has to be this one! My brother always told me of the time that he and his friend, Keith saw a ghost while cycling in the evening.
There is nothing like a great corroboration between people than to spot Keith on Facebook while I was asking the guys about ghosts in the Wycombe area! In fact it was Keith who popped up with his version of the story:
Keith and Andrew:
Saw one in Medmenham about 45 years ago. Out cycling with your brother but he did not see it.
Yes I did, it was someone or something standing near a tree, then it disappeared, I didn't like to say anything because I thought he would think I was weird!
Lady in old fashioned flowing dress just stood on the left hand side 1/2 way between the dog and badger and the turn on the right that goes down to the sailing club and lady gray tunnel!
How about that? 45 years in between, Keith and my brother haven't seen each other in years, then wham!
I would just like to say thanks to all the High Wycombe and Marlow residents who enthusiastically jumped in when I asked, have any of you seen a ghost?
It seems that there are many everyday people who see and hear things but don't have a chance to get their voice heard. So thanks to them, and if you have a real life ghost story why not let me know in the comments or email me?
So, the big question. Do I believe in ghosts? Well yes. After seeing that man in the alley which made me run like hell, I can categorically state that I do believe there is something pretty spooky going on!
