Hello, I am Christian and I love to read the bible. I want to be able to share the word of God through writing and hopefully, inspire others

" What's wrong with eating? ", " How can indulging yourself to the pleasure of eating be wrong? ", These are the common question of those who love eating delicious food. Who would not love to eat delicious food right? and all people need to eat to live, to have the energy to perform daily tasks and to have nourishment to be healthy. Food is a basic necessity and it is normal for people to eat. Food is a blessing from God and it is not wrong to enjoy it. But what makes eating a sin? It becomes a sin when you eat excessively. this is called Gluttony.

Do you notice that when you eat excessively, you get various diseases? and some can even lead to death. If gluttony is not bad, why does it have bad consequences? If Gluttony is not a sin, why is there a punishment for gluttons? If Gluttony is good, it will result to good things. If gluttony is not a sin, then there would be blessings instead of punishment, am I right?

Now, Let's Ask the Bible About Gluttony

What does the Bible Tells About Gluttony?

" Their destiny is destruction, their God is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. "

Philippians 3:19 ESV

The Bible says that those who set their minds on earthly things are destined for destruction because their God is their stomachs. In short, filling their stomachs with more food is more important than them and because of this, they destroy their bodies.

" For Drunkards and Gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags."

Proverbs 23:21 ESV

The Bible also says that the Gluttons will become poor. Who would not become poor, buying expensive food and spending more money on food? Instead of buying only what is enough, a glutton ends up buying extra food which is unnecessary and foolish.

Why is Gluttony a Sin?

1. Gluttony is Idolatry

The Bible Says;

" Do not be Idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: ' The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry'. "

1 Corinthians 10:7 ESV

Gluttony along with Drunkenness is a sin, It is Idolatry. It is a choice of self-love, comfort, and loss of control through food. Instead of God controlling their lives, it is their appetite that controls them. Instead of seeking comfort through God, a Glutton seeks comfort while filling their stomachs with their earthly desires.

2. Gluttony Destroys the Temple of God

Gluttons do not care for their bodies which is considered a temple of God, like what the Bible says;

" Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him. For God's temple is holy and you are that temple."

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 ESV

Are you aware that you are destroying the Temple of God because of overeating? A Glutton only likes to enjoy food and fill their stomachs, even if it destroys their body, makes them sick, and waste money to buy more than enough food to eat. Overeating can result in Obesity, Heart Attack, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, and much more. Now tell me if it is not destroying your own body.

3. Gluttony is Temptation

" But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. "

James 1:14 ESV

Eating more is a gluttonous desire. And therefore, a glutton is tempted by his desire to eat more. Gluttony is not God's desire for us. God does not want us to lose control over the desires of our own flesh.

" For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."

2 Timothy 1:7 ESV

God gave us the spirit of self-control so we can discipline and control ourselves in every way.

How Can We Overcome Gluttony?

  • Exercise Your Self-Control

" For God gave us the spirit not of fear but of power, and of love and self-control."

    2 Timothy 1:7 ESV

Is your self-control not enough? then you should try the next tip.

  • Submit Yourself to God

" Submit yourselves, then to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

    James 4:7 NIV

Acknowledge that you have sinned and repent. Submit yourself to God. Resist the devil, try to eat what is enough and not excessively.

If you still find it difficult to resist the devil, what shall we do?

  • Ask God to Guide You

" This is the confidence we have in approaching God: That if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us- whatever we ask- we know that we have what we asked of him."

    1 John 5:14-15 NIV

We can ask anything to God as long as it is according to his will. Ask God to guide you in your battle to fight gluttony. He hears you and he will help you.

But if this does work either, what shall we do?

  • Think of Lord Jesus

" Rather clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature."

    Romans 13:14 NIV

Do not think of your desire to eat more. Every time you are tempted, think of Lord Jesus instead.

    Remember when the Lord fast for forty days and forty nights? he was very hungry at that time and he was tempted by the devil saying " If you are the son of God, tell this stones to become bread." But does Lord Jesus gave in to the temptation? No! Instead, he said;

" Jesus answered, ' It is written: ' Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

    Matthew 4:4 NIV

So we should live like our Lord Jesus. Let's make him our role model and live on the word of God. Every time you will be tempted, think of Lord Jesus and call his name.

But If All this does not Work, What shall we do? Is it the End?

The answer is a big NO. If this is the case, repeat from the first step. Repeat and repeat and repeat until you overcome gluttony. Never lose faith, never lose hope, and put your best effort. And little by little you will see the change and you will overcome the sin of Gluttony. Don't give up because God will help you through Jesus Christ to overcome this sin. After all, change does not occur only in one night. Never Give Up!

You make very good points. I hope you do not mind me adding some points as well.

I believe that the reason certain animals are prohibited to eat in scripture is because they also lead to the sin of gluttony. For example, the pig. "There are reasons that the meat of the pig becomes more saturated with toxins than many of its counterpart farm animals. The first reason has to do with the digestive system of a pig. A pig digests whatever it eats rather quickly, in up to about four hours. On the other hand, a cow takes a good 24 hours to digest what it’s eaten. During the digestive process, animals, including humans, get rid of excess toxins as well as other components of the food eaten that could be dangerous to health. Since the pig’s digestive system operates rather basically, many of these toxins remain in its system to be stored in its more than adequate fatty tissues ready for our consumption." From Why You Should Avoid Pork by Dr. Josh Axe.

Swine has tons of artery-clogging cholesterol and saturated fat. This can drastically increase your weight as well as increase your chances of developing heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s, asthma, trichinosis, or impotence. So just by eating pork, you are increasing your chances of developing life threatening diseases. Compare this to other protein filled foods and they do not compare in the potential side effects. You can justify it by saying pork has protein in it.

Leviticus 11 43-47 says the purpose of this law is to sanctify them. What does sanctify mean?

set apart as or declare holy; consecrate. "a small shrine was built to sanctify the site"

synonyms:consecrate, bless, make holy, hallow, make sacred, dedicate to God

"he came to sanctify the site"

make legitimate or binding by religious sanction."they see their love sanctified by the sacrament of marriage"

synonyms:approve, sanction, condone, vindicate, endorse, support, back, permit, allow, authorize, legitimize"we must not sanctify this outrage"

free from sin; purify.synonyms:purify, cleanse, free from sin, absolve, unburden, redeem"they sanctified themselves"

So according to the definition of sanctify, it means to be set apart/holy, approved by religious sanction, and to be free from sin. Does the scripture disagree?

Leviticus 11 44's use of sanctified.

      Strong's Concordance

6942. qadash: ,,to be set apart or consecrated,,

Original Word: קָדַשׁ Part of Speech: Verb

      Transliteration: qadash

      Phonetic Spelling: kaw-dash'

      Short Definition: ,,consecrate,,

How is this used in scripture?

become consecrated ,2,, become defiled ,1,, become holy ,1,, consecrate ,43,, consecrated ,35,, consecrates ,7,, consecration ,2,, declare holy ,1,, dedicate ,2,, dedicated ,8,, dedicating ,1,, holier ,1,, holy ,5,, keep ,1,, keep it holy ,2,, keep the holy ,3,, made it holy ,1,, manifest my holiness ,2,, prepare ,2,, prove myself holy ,2,, proved himself holy ,1,, purified ,1,, regard as holy ,1,, sanctified ,9,, sanctifies ,10,, sanctify ,12,, set them apart ,1,, set apart ,4,, set apart the consecrated ,2,, show himself holy ,1,, transmit holiness ,2,, treat me as holy ,3,, treated as holy ,1,, vindicate the holiness ,1,, wholly dedicate ,1,.

So he had these people become set apart/holy unlike the other nations. But set apart how? We can agree that the Almighty is good, right? So his laws are good. He would not give them a bad law. What law did he set before them?

      Deuteronomy 30 19

"I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live."

So the laws he gave them were life. They were good. These laws are good.
