Doing Research on Jesus

in the Gospel of John chapter 5 and verse 39 Jesus says in the King James translation;"Search the scriptures: for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me."

Research or looking up information 30 to 40 years ago would lead us to the encyclopedia britannica, or world book encyclopedia. Today if we are looking up information we go to the World Wide Web, or the internet in some form. That can lead us to Wikipedia, or certain websites. Websites have an address that always begin with WWW. This indicates that the site is not just local but world wide. The website reveals information about it's resident host, and it's webmaster. When ever we go to a search engine such as google or bing, they will lead us to websites and webpages to get information.

It seems apparent that Jesus was acquainted with doing research. In John the fifth chapter he sent the Jewish religious leaders to do search of what the bible said about him. During that day and age the bible only consisted of the Old Testament. Jesus remarked to them that in the scriptures you think you have eternal life, but in them you will find that they also testify of me.

They had studied the scriptures, but did not realize that Jesus was in them. The Jews sought to kill Jesus because he had healed a sick man on the Sabbath Day.The man had been sick for thirty eight years, and was down in a bed. When Jesus revealed that he was doing the work of his Father, they sought to kill him even the more. Jesus realized that they did not know him because they did not know the scriptures taught about him. They read the Old Testament text, but missed what it said about Jesus. So Jesus sent them to on a scripture search to find him.

They thought salvation was found in the Law of Moses. If they had searched the scriptures they would have found: first, that in the Pentateuch he was the Ram in the bush substituted for Isaac. He was also the deliverer of the Jews, and their sacrifice on the altar. Secondly in the history books they would have found that he was a leader in battle, and a kinsman redeemer. Thirdly, in the books of poetry they would have found him as the Shepard of God's sheep, and the Lord of King David. Fourth, they would have found in the books of the major prophets that he was the fire in Jeremiah's bones, he was a mighty counselor, a wheel in the middle of a wheel, the Rose of Sharon, the Bright and Morning Star, as well as the fourth man in the fiery furnace. Fifth, in the books of the Minor Prophets they would have found him to be a husband to a backsliding wife, and the Son of Righteousness. Jesus was telling them that they needed to go to God's web site; the Old Testament. For us, today God's Website consist of the Old and the New Testament.

At God's Website we find: First, eternal life revealed. In John chapter 3, verses 14 and 15 Jesus says "as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up, that whosoever believes in him should not perish," but have eternal life. Peter tells us in In I Peter chapter 5 verse 10 but the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, and settle you. Then there is John the Apostle telling us in I John chapter 5 verse 11 this is the record, that God hath given us eternal life, and this life is in his son. Secondly we find that It testifies of Jesus. His genealogy is found in Matthew the first chapter. Matthew takes his genealogy back to Abraham, which is his Jewish heritage. Luke chapter 3 takes his genealogy back to Adam, which traces his humanity. John chapter 1 traces his genealogy all the way back to God the Father, which is his divine heritage.Third it tells us the harmony between God the Father and Jesus his Son. At the baptism of Jesus, God spoke from heaven and said, "this is my beloved Son in whom i am well pleased." Later on the Mount of Transfiguration God spoke saying,"this is my beloved Son hear Him." Jesus said in John chapter 14 and verse 10 "I am in the Father and the Father in me. The world that I speak unto you are not of myself, but the Father.

What those men need to learn as will as our generation is that the scriptures are not a local word, for people of a certain locality, but it is a world wide word. This word has the ability to take one before the very throne of God.
