Halloween and the Misuse of Romans 14

Updated on October 4, 2017

PlanksandNails' goal is to be a catalyst in encouraging the followers of Christ to pursue Biblical truth for themselves.

The celebration of Halloween is esteemed around the world where people dress up in costumes that represent evil, darkness and death. Even the religious institutionalized Christian will join in the festivities saying that it’s all about fun. They say, 'It is only evil, if we believe it to be' among many other arguments in justifying celebrating this festival that is celebrated around the world.

This purpose of this article is not to delve into the origins of Halloween with its pagan and idolatrous roots, but to answer the religious arguments that attempt to quote Romans 14 and misuse it to justify mixing the holy and profane in an attempt to show 'God's love' to their neighbours as 'justification' in participating with them on this pagan holiday.

I recently came across a blog post called, Why Christians Should Absolutely Celebrate Halloween!

Unfortunately, the link is no longer active, but I was able to take a pic of the post below for your perusal.

Why Christians Absolutely Should Celebrate Halloween!

This was written by a church Pastor, but he used no Biblical precedence to back up his religious opinions. In fact, he used absolutely no Scripture references at all. When he was called out, he said, 'I’d encourage you to dig into God’s word. You’ll see it all there.'

I guess this was his assumption of anyone who would dare question him assuming that we are to take his word for it that ‘you’ll see it all there.'If the Pastor says so, then it must be so, right?

Well, what we will see in Scripture is quite different than the popular notions today.

What is interesting is that the comments section of his post became viral. This is where it takes discernment to make the distinction between truth and deceit when reading through all the commentary. Out of all the comments, there was really only one section of Scripture that seemed to be the best argument for celebrating Halloween in an attempt justify the author’s affirmation of Halloween practices.

The common argument was, 'Halloween isn't mentioned in the Bible; therefore, it falls in the area of Christian liberty.'

In regards to 'Christian liberty,' let’s dig into God’s word because the answers are in there. What we will find is that the conclusions of many false shepherds are exposed as deception. When someone states, 'Christians should absolutely celebrate Halloween,' we must be vigilant in contending for the truth.

Beloved, DO NOT IMITATE EVIL but imitate good. Whoever does good is from God; whoever does evil has not seen God. – 3 John 1:11

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? OR WHAT FELLOWSHIP HAS LIGHT WITH DARKNESS? – 2 Corinthians 6:14

Therefore go out from their midst, and BE SEPARATE FROM THEM, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing – 2 Corinthians 6:17

'Gospel of Love'

Religious men have created their own version of 'God’s love' by neglecting the truth as they presume they are 'loving' their neighbours by celebrating Halloween with them in order to get to know them better.

I guess they couldn’t get to know them the rest of the year so they choose to celebrate Halloween to promote their institutional church Gospel to please them. Then, hopefully they will come to church for programming and indoctrination into their liturgical traditions.

What they have created for themselves is the social Gospel of 'love' that is meant to appeal to the world. There are many who profess the love of Christ, but have no interest in understanding the truth that is in God’s word. They stand on man’s traditions to define what God’s love is.

However, God’s love can only be perfected in those who are obedient to Him.

Whoever says, “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and THE TRUTH IS NOT IN HIM – 1 John 2:4

Without being obedient to the doctrine that God has given us, the truth will not be in us. Without truth, we cannot have the knowledge of His love. Without the knowledge of His love, any 'love' apart from His love is a counterfeit one that has no value or place in the Kingdom of God. When we have the word of God embedded in our hearts, the truth will be within us. This is the most import thing to have because truth is the umbrella over love. It is only then that we will know how to love our neighbours as ourselves.

And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. THIS IS THE GREAT AND FIRST COMMANDMENT. And a SECOND is like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 22:37-40

Loving Our Neighbours

Christ refuted the counterfeit Gospel of 'love' in the above Scripture verses.

Do you notice that he doesn’t say that we are to love our neighbours first, but to love God first?

How many falsely believe that they have God’s love within them, but they actually have rejected God and His truth through disobedience?

The institutional church will please men by creating a 'substitute' for Halloween giving their own names to it. They are under a false assumption that if their children are missing out on all the fun of celebrating evil and darkness, then it is acceptable to imitate what they do, but in a religious 'alternative.'

They fail in teaching them to not love the things of the world.

DO NOT LOVE THE WORLD OR THE THINGS IN THE WORLD. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. -1 John 2:15

They do not understand that by creating a supposed 'substitute,' it just keeps the satanic tradition alive. Youth leaders in the church system are notorious for doing this as many youth nights are syncretic with the same things the world are doing.

ABSTAIN from every form of evil. – 1 Thessalonians 5:22

Changing the name to 'Holy-ween' or some other Christian lingo word does not change what this day is truly about, nor is it an example of believers being separate from them.

The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us CAST OFF THE WORKS OF DARKNESS and put on the armor of light. – Romans 13:12

"Halloween Jesus" (2 Corinthians 11:4)
"Halloween Jesus" (2 Corinthians 11:4)

The problem is that the religious indoctrinated ignore the totality of Scripture and base their twisted doctrines to justify celebrating Halloween around certain Scripture verses, particularly Romans chapter 14. They seek to distort the Scriptures and teach something vastly different from the intended contextual meaning.

Those who twist Scripture often choose obscure problematic or ambiguous texts. The appeal of Scripture twisters is that they tickles ears providing a pretext for self-indulgence and sin for their followers as well as themselves.

You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard lest, being carried away by the ERROR OF UNPRINCIPLED MEN, you fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him [be] the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen — 2 Peter 3:17-18

Peter’s words are written so the followers of Christ will be on their guard and alert to those who twist the word of God. He expects his brothers and sisters in Christ to be able to discern those who pervert God’s word. Every follower of Christ should be able to recognize those who Peter warns about.

One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be FULLY CONVINCED in his own mind. - Romans14:5

In this verse, many believe that they can substitute just about anything into it as long as we are 'convinced in our own minds,' then that is the justification.

They fail to understand that the context of Romans 14 is speaking about 'special days' because the Jews had human traditions concerning fasting twice each week. If someone didn’t follow the pattern, they were regarded as less pious. Paul was simply declaring that what we do, or don’t do is okay, fasting or not.

The 'days' that Paul was referring to were the traditional fast days mentioned in Zechariah 7:5-6.

Paul never condoned the adoption of pagan customs and traditions to honor God with them. This is going far beyond the intention of what Paul wrote. Peter warned us not to misunderstand Paul’s writings.

To build doctrine around the twisting of Scripture according to one’s own eisegesis of a certain passage is not rightly dividing the word.

A simple reading of Romans 14 is about certain foods on fast days and how people’s beliefs about fasting should not be interfered with. The fast days could be observed according to each believer’s conscience. A man could eat or not eat, keep the day or not keep it. Each man could observe fast days or not observe them according to their own convictions.

Do not FOR THE SAKE OF FOOD, destroy the work of God. – Romans 14:20

To appeal to a particular passage such as Romans 14 in the name of 'liberty' can lead to many accepting a sinful doctrine through the deceit of many who allude to this passage. The compromise and perversion of Scripture has led many down the wide path where they start adopting every sinful matter into the text.

Matters of indifference, doctrine and sin can be thrown into the mix and we get a cesspool of abominable practices.

One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. EACH ONE SHOULD BE FULLY CONVINCED IN HIS OWN MIND. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. – Romans 14:5-6

This is fatal eisegesis to accept sinful doctrines and practices and do it all in the name of Christ. The salaried clergy of each denomination will decide what can and cannot be put on their formulated list of 'authorized' liberties.

The question must be asked, can a disciple of Christ follow his own conscience being fully assured in his own mind concerning sinful doctrines and its practices?

This answer is no; otherwise, truth would be subjective from one person to the next.

Unfortunately, the traditions of man arbitrate what they deem to be right and wrong according to their own seared consciences.

Your boasting is not good. DO YOU NOT KNOW THAT A LITTLE LEAVEN LEAVENS THE WHOLE LUMP? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. – 1 Corinthians 5:6-7

Righteousness exalts a nation, but SIN IS A REPROACH TO ANY PEOPLE. – Proverbs 14:34

The modern church system has accepted what is shameful and blatantly justifies their actions in the name of 'liberty' and 'love' for their neighbours.

As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but NOT TO QUARREL OVER OPINIONS. – Romans 14:1

Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, AND LET NOT THE ONE WHO ABSTAINS PASS JUDGMENT on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. – Romans 14:3

These verses are used as an excuse to receive sin into our fellowship when God does not receive them into His. The blind indoctrinated pew warmers tell us that we are not to dispute or judge because they are disputable matters.

The error is that they are not authorized disputable matters attested in Scripture because disputable matters are not in the realm of the sin of breaking God’s laws.

The context of Romans 14 are on matters that are neither required, nor prohibited (wrong or sinful). In verses 14,16 and 20, they are matters that are deemed by Paul as 'good,' 'pure' and 'clean' in receiving one another in our fellowship based on Scripturally authorized liberties, not on sinful matters and behaviours that imitate evil.

To shift from one category to another and call it a 'liberty' is in grave error.

Institutionalized church doctrine gets away with it every time. They take 'love' and turn it into 'fornication' by desiring the ways of the world instead of being obedient to God’s ways by walking the narrow path.

The church system of today has an ecumenical agenda with the world with their false unity. The false Gospel of 'love' is accepting being reconciled with one another by carnal subjective reasoning arbitrarily apply their own rules to certain passages in Scripture.

In the case of Halloween, the passage is not applicable in our liberty in Christ because the holiday never was and never will be clean, pure and good as its origins never came from God, but is in the category of abominable practices.

There is and never will be a substitute or alternative no matter how many ways you want to 'Christianize' it.

And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them THE WAY OF TRUTH WILL BE BLASPHEMED. – 2 Peter 2:2

"Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor IDOLATERS, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God" – 1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Partaking in doctrines that twist Scripture based on the rhetoric and sophistry of false teachers meant to muzzle those who uphold the truth and expose sinful behaviours to please their worldly neighbours leads to spiritual death.

Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to CONTEND FOR THE FAITH that was once for all delivered to the saints. – Jude 1:3

God has demanded that we are to be a separate people and the truth has been made clear. The modern church not only justifies their sins, but take pleasure in them as well. Truth must be put into practice. To receive someone who takes pleasure in the ways of the world is also a partaker in their deeds.

If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, FOR WHOEVER GREETS HIM TAKES PART IN HIS WICKED WORKS. -2 John 1:10-11

Those who desire truth will not allow Romans 14 to be a twisted eisegesis as a compromise for sin.

Throwing Halloween into the mix is simply a license to sin.

Do you believe that Christians should absolutely celebrate Halloween?

The comments of that blog post is really a gauge of where the institutional Church is at, not just on Halloween, but many other deviations from the truth. There were many comments that I cringed at.

Unfortunately, many are drinking the Kool-Aid. The indoctrinated love the billboard signs that guide them along the wide road.

The "500 saved" are actually code words used by the pastor.

This is what it means coming from his Church page,

Make giving a part of your Worship experience by placing cash or a check in the offering plate or by placing it in the drop box in the Welcome Center.

      — Please make checks payable to “.................” —

A credit card is a simple and secure way to give your tithes and offerings from your smartphone or the privacy of your home. You can choose to give a one-time gift or set up a recurring gift.

      — Give Now —

We welcome tithes and offerings via mail. You can send your tithes to "******" by mailing it to: "******"

An auto draft from your checking or savings account means you never have to worry about remembering to write your tithe and offering check, even if you are out of town.

      — Give Now —

I think that covers all the bases.

We can see why the pastor would say "500 saved" because that means that business is good.

And constant friction among people who are DEPRAVED in mind and deprived of the truth, IMAGINING that godliness is a means of gain. - 1 Timothy 6:5

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. They are encouraging and always welcome.

I believe Halloween appeals to the carnal nature of man. The sugar laced candy is the same as the "gospel" they preach. You can't redeem idolatry no matter how many ways someone tries to justify it. Halloween is simply another golden calf of Christendom.

Thank-you for the affirmation. God Bless.

The harlot church system has countless people within her reins. They are good at cherry-picking Scripture to keep their agendas going. We must be diligent in our study of God's Word to recognize deception. Anyone can throw out Bible verses as evidence, but many really have not dug into the context of the verses they are using in support of a lie they have been told. When you call them on it, they just move on to their other pet verses without acknowledging that they already have twisted Scripture the first time around.

Eventually, the pattern starts becoming really obvious that their minds have been seared with indoctrination and they are set in their ways.

In our passion for truth, it is tempting to call certain people particular things. We all have to learn to be wise in our words and keep within the protocols of the site as there are many who are looking to get particular people banned. Hopefully, they will lift your ban after a certain probationary period.

I went to the link you mentioned in the hub and read the entire comments section. Back in the day one of my additional duties in the Navy was a Substance abuse Counselor. The training involved many "of this world teachings" and I came to hate the words "rationalize/rationalization". Maybe hate is a bit strong but it seemed to be the catch phrase to explain anything. Well I can not think of a better way to describe almost all of the comments in favor of "live and let live" reaction to the pagan holiday. They are some of the best and smart sounding rationalizers I've seen gathered in one place in quite some time. One positive note is that at least the poster took all statements which allowed some actual light into the darkness.

The bad part is that the opinions in the remarks section are in fact the majority opinion, and all coming from profession Christians. Defending the opinions was the "well 500 people have been saved at the pastors church". One has to wonder saved from what. There was a time that it would be hard to find such darkness among the professing, well not any more. Thanks for sharing your finds that will help to build us up in the faith.

I've heard the Romans 14 argument used for many issues of Christian debate. I can't figure out for the life of me why so many are so heated to protect Halloween as a sacred rite not to be tampered with. It is such a strange observance for Christians that has absolutely no congruence with anything having to do with God or the Bible.

It really does fit the example of cultural "church" where we do what we do because that's what we have always done without question, not even having a clue nor caring whether God is pleased or if its Scriptural, as long as it's fun and we can claim we didn't hurt anybody.

The not hurting someone is questionable when we glorify evil and dark things in any form or make light of subjects like death and horror which are very real, by pretending in costume and experience then pitch that to our children. What, really, is so fun about trying to scare people anyway, especially children. That seems like such a strange thing to do or enjoy for that matter?

I liked your scriptural take on this matter and your presentation is sound and makes sense.

PandN- I am commenting as a guest user now because I have been blocked from using my normal user name I had. I assue many so called christian " have read my comments in the past will realize at some point what my user named had been at one time. But it will not stop me from spreading the Kingdom message anyway. Nor will it stop me from voicing my opinion regarding many false "christain church" followers using Hub Pages to spread their false doctrine. But I will refrain from calling people "cowards" in any future comments.

With that said I fully agree with this article. Halloween should be seen as an evil tradition by those within the church system, but we must remember that the Churches we see today is part of the Harlot system. And Halloween to many "so called christians" seem harmless, regardless of the verses you have quoted in this article. As part of the ecclesia you and I realize the evilness behind the halloween tradition. There is nothing Godly about halloween and surely "christians" must realize it but don't care. And as a disciple in Christ it is something that we should NEVER want to have a part of. This is one example of the difference between a disciple of Christ and a "so called christian". Disciple know evil when they see it.

Your quote of 1John 2:15 fits this article perfectly.

      God bless
