America's Haunted Cemeteries

Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 in New Orleans, Louisiana is one of the most well-known haunted cemeteries in the United States. First of all, the cemetery is located in one of the most haunted places in the United States - in the French Quarter of New Orleans, LA. The two most popular ghosts of the spirits roaming about the above-ground tombs are the ghosts of the "Voodoo Queen" Maria Laveau and her daughter. Legend claims that if one visits the tomb of the infamous Voodoo Queen, one can be granted three wishes. Draw three x's in chalk or brick on her tomb, knock three times, and leave an offering and she will grant you your wishes.

Marie Laveau's agitated ghost has been seen haunting Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1, specifically around the area of her mauseleom. Some have seen her floating around, while many others say they feel her presence. One man even claimed that she grabbed his shoulder as he walked by her grave. There are other ghosts at the Saint Louis Cemetery in New Orleans. The ghost of a man named Henry has been seen wearing a white shirt and asking people where he can locate his own grave. Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 is just one of the many haunted graveyards in the United States, but possibly the most memorable because of the architecture and history behind it.

Boot Hill Cemetery is located in Tombstone, Arizona and is said to be haunted by a few cowboy ghosts. One in particular made an appearance in a photograph and that photograph has come to be known as one of the most popular haunted graveyard pictures to date. You can see that photo in the haunted graveyard photos below. Many psychics have taken their stab at this ghost's story and most of them come up with the fact that this ghost is a young man who is looking for something...even in death. Some say he was a wild one, a gambler and a horse thief, while others just claim that he is lost and needs to find his way out of the haunted Boot Hill Cemetery and to the other side.

Bachelor's Grove Cemetery in Illinois is another of the haunted graveyards in America and why? Because one of the most famous haunted graveyard pictures was taken there in the middle of the day! A professional paranormal investigator shot a photograph of a woman sitting on a gravestone in broad daylight. You can see that photo to the right. The woman seems to be staring into the distance, and she is wearing a burial shroud from a period in time long passed. Bachelor's Grove Cemetery is a haunted graveyard and is said to be quite dilapidated, worn by the weather and a lack of care for the place. As it is located in Chicago, Illinois, it is said that some of the gangsters from the 1920s and 30s buried much of their victims in this graveyard. Some of the headstones in this haunted graveyard have been known to pick themselves up and move. Another ghost of a woman and her baby have been seen here, which some believe is the same lady in the haunted graveyard picture to the right (minus the baby). They call her the "White Lady".

More Haunted Graveyard Stories

Union Cemetery in Connecticut is a haunted graveyard that many say is "damned" by the dead. One particular ghost in this haunted graveyard is also known as the "White Lady". She is the ghost of a woman who is speculated to have been murdered or possibly hit by a horse and buggy in the 18th century. She has been seen in the graveyard, but mostly seen along Route 59 which runs alongside of the Cemetery. Some eyewitnesses have even hit her with their cars, none of them leaving any physical evidence except for one firemen's vehicle. After he hit her apparition, he got out of his car and looked for anybody and couldn't find anything except for a dent in the front of his car. He also claims that right before he ran into her ghost that a man dressed as a farmer appeared in the seat beside him. But that man was never seen again. Could it be that the "White Lady" was a bride who was hit by a horse and buggy many years ago and replays her death with cars passing by?

A set of red eyes have also been seen in the haunted graveyard of Union Cemetery, which many say also chased down that eyewitness...scaring the daylights out of him!

The Presbyterian Churchyard, also called the Old Western Burial Ground, is located in Baltimore, MD and is said to be one of the most haunted places in the US. The haunted graveyard houses many well-known individuals from the 18th and 19th centuries, including the author Edgar Allan Poe, dozens of generals from Wars such as the War of 1812, and even soldiers from the Revolutionary War. Legend has it that Edgar Allan Poe's ghost can be seen wandering about the Old Western Burial Ground, as well as soldiers from the different time periods. But perhaps the most frightening of the Presbyterian Churchyard's hauntings is that of the "Skull of Cambridge". The Skull of Cambridge is said to be the severed head of a murdered minister, buried in cement somewhere in the haunted graveyard. Sounds of screams can be heard coming from the area where the Skull is buried, screams which haunt the witnesses for many days after they hear it. If you want to take a stab at hearing the screams of the Skull of Cambridge, the Old Western Burial Ground is located on Fayette Street in Baltimore, MD. Just be respectful of the dead and leave some flowers or liquor, if indeed you are brave enough to pay a visit.

Enjoyed this graveyard ghostly Kitty. Had a guy from Chi-town tell me about hat Bachelor's Grove Cemetery; and if anyone's ever visited The Orlean's French Quarter, well, with all the graves above ground no wonder the spirits are restless lol.

Thanks to everyone who commented on this hub. I really enjoyed writing it! Graveyards are something of an interest of mine, simply for their beauty and peacefulness. But sometimes they aren't as peaceful as we would think, hmm? Thanks so much!

So good to see you Kitty! I am glad to see you are still writing about what fascinates us all! No surprise.

We used to hang out at the neighboring graveyard in high school and I must say that it was more interesting than school most of the time! Well done!

Ghosts, can't live with them, can't live without them. They're all around us. The media, our subconscious mind, even a friendly neighborhood ghost if one happen to live in an old house.:)

I find ghosts fascinating. My home is haunted with a small being that we have yet to determine much about and my husband and I have had an experience with a ghost wolf that saved our lives one night. I'll write a hub about that one. But anyway many of the photos that I take of my children have orbs floating in them and some even with great mists that swirl around one or the other of them. Thanks for the great read, I liked the photos too!!!

Kitty - another awesome hub and the photos are stunning!

I remember watching a documentary about Tucson, Arizona and they also mentioned Boot Hill cemetery - going with the amount of hauntings in the town, it's not surprising that the cemetery is also haunted. It really was fascinating not only about the ghosts but the whole history.

I loved this hub - excellently creepy and fascinating!

Great hub on haunted graveyards kittythedreamer and some of the photos are really eerie. I still maintain though that you generally have more to worry about from the live people than the dead ones! I find that most graveyards that I have visited to be very peaceful, serene places.
