Haunted Cavalier Hotel Virginia Beach Virginia

This is where the high society people used to stay when they visited Virginia Beach. People like F Scott Fitzgerald, Will Rogers, Mary Pickford, Ginger Rogers and many other famous people stayed over the years at the Cavalier Hotel which opened in 1927. Adolph Coors either committed suicide in the hotel by jumping out a sixth floor window or as some people claim he was thrown out the sixth floor window. And many people over the years claim they see the well dressed ghost of Adolph Coors either on the sixth floor or in the hotel lobby.

There is a piano downstairs that plays by its self and it has been seen doing so by many people over the years. Many famous people performed in the area over the years and 10 US Presidents stayed in the hotel over the years and gave speeches in the hotel. Many people over the years have claimed to see Glen Miller setting in the Hunt Room. And there in the Hunt Room is where there has been much paranormal activity going on over the years.

One of the most famous ghosts of the Cavalier Hotel is the ghost of a large yellow cat that people see all the time in the hotel hallways. The cat also meows and scratches at doors and people have complained often even though there has not been a cat alloweed in the hotel in the last 40 years.

The first owner of the hotel shot himself when he learned that Prohibition had been passed. It is claimed that he is the one that rings the bell at the check in desk and has been known to knock things off shelves and throws papers off desks into the floor.

Over all most ghost hunters agree that the Cavalier Hotel is one of the most haunted places in Virginia.

It is in this Confederate graveyard near Lebanon Virginia where people see a blazing fire that floats around above the ground and screams at the person or person to get out. Many EVP's have been recorded by Ghost Hunters here over the years.

Many of the EVP's say help me. At least three separate distinct voices have been recorded saying help me. Orbs are seen all the time at night in the cemetery and a skeleton has been seen numerous times by various people. It walks around the graveyard and people run. Many people have called police to ask if the police would go back with them to get items left in the graveyard when they ran.

It is inside the soldiers circle that you see in the photo where the ghost of a soldier is seen kneeling and crying. Some people say that the soldier has looked so real that people have gone up to him to see if they can help him in any way. When they get close to him he vanishes.

It is also in this cemetery where a soldier that appears to be from the Confederate era is seen riding a white horse. People say they hear the horses hooves on the ground and the really strange thing is the horse appears to jump into the air and it and its rider vanish.

A woman dressed in a dress from the 1880's is seen walking at the edge of daylight and just after sundown. She is crying walking along among the grave stones. If anyone comes near her she points at them and vanishes. Some people have claimed to hear her say, Please Robert. Who is she no one knows.

On October 15th, 2011, my husband and I were in Virginia Beach, staying at another hotel. I had heard about the Cavalier and was told they are open to the public for meals, so off we went in hopes of seeing a bit of this hotel.

Again, I had it in mind that I wanted to encounter something from the other side, and I believe that "ghosts" and spirits do know when you are eager to encounter them. It's like an open invitation of sorts. This isn't the first time I've experienced what I consider to be phenomenon like this.

We get to the hotel, enter the main lobby and are told in no uncertain terms that unfortunately the hotel is not open to the public on this day and only available for private parties. I asked the man who stopped us if he had any encounters, to which he was rather non-commital, and not very interested in the topic. We stood around for a minute or two and my husband actually got a few pictures of the place for the brief time we were there.

      Disappointed, we walked out.

But.... this is where the encounter story begins to unfold....

We decided to go back to where we had parked the car previously (at our hotel we had just checked out of) and planned to have lunch on the beach before leaving to return to our home in New York.

We pull into the spot in the parking lot. Mind you, it had been a little windy here and there that day. But what I'm about to tell you seems to defy logic about how wind behaves.

      Here's what happened:

Once we were parked, I, wearing a baseball cap, opened my door. It was the front seat, passenger side. As soon as I opened the door, a strong gust of wind (now I'm still IN THE CAR, mind you) swiftly takes my hat, and the hat basically DISAPPEARED.

My husband quickly, even before me, got out and started searching high and low for this hat. I followed, searching everywhere. In the car, outside the car, under the car (you get the picture). We look around the parking lot. We searched for what must have been 5 or 10 minutes.

I thought to myself " How could the hat have just been swept off my head like that and now we cannot find it anywhere??" I mean, there wasn't a tornado or hurricane or anything. It was just a quick gust of wind that seemed to come right into the car and take the hat right off my head!!!

I checked with the front desk to make sure it was ok that we parked in that spot while we went for lunch. They said " fine, no problem". So, off we went to the beach for lunch.

I said to my husband " Maybe that was a ghost from the Cavalier just letting me know he's there, since I was interested in an encounter. "

      Then I said

" Watch. We'll get back to the car and the hat will be right on the seat" (I'm getting chills just talking about this right now, which also makes me suspect this is the paranormal here. Had the same chills when relaying this story to our daughter).

After lunch, we walked back to the car.

It was perfectly positioned facing outward, not even toppled over.

It was in a VERY OBVIOUS and VISIBLE place. AND DEFINITELY WASN'T THERE when we searched before we left for lunch.

My feeling was that this was a ghost from the Cavalier playing with us. Kind of like a poltergeist. It was wild.

That's my story. Can upload photos later as we do have a few.

I'm very interested to know if anyone else has encountered a similar experience with the Cavalier hotel.

      Thanks for reading!

I stayed at the Cavalier Hotel about 3 years ago on my visit to Virginia Beach. When I stayed there I was unaware of it's long history. I only stayed one night but I did not experience anything out of the ordinary, only an old rundown hotel. The air conditioning was not working throughout the hotel, mind you it was towards the end of June and hot! To make maters worse the water also broke down so you couldn't take a bath to cool off. The only consolation we were given were a sorry and no refunds. I think the only reason they say there is a ghost there is to try to get people to come stay at their hotel. Read reviews of it on your own. Don't believe the hype.

I just came back from staying at the Cavalier at VA Beach for an evening. I love that place, especially when I'm at the enclosed porch near the pool, late at night, reading. However, when staying in my room (alone), my imagination ran away with me. I'll call this a very realistic-like dream, but by 4:00AM, I was sleeping with the light and TV on. I'm too old to be scared like this. Anyway, as I thought I was sleeping, two African Americans came to visit by my bedside. A young woman was to the side of the bed that I was closest to. She looked like she was in her mid 20's. The young man was on the edge of the bottom of the bed. I actually asked his name and age. He was 18. I can only recall some of the sound of his name, and it sounded close to Dennis, but was not an Americanized name like that. More like a beginning of Don.... I can't remember the woman's name but I think had an "ei" in it. My fear of the dream had me forgetting what the conversation was about. I almost felt that they were slaves from the past(totally in error to the age of the Cavalier), but definitely servants of some type. I managed to think I went back to sleep when another person came into the room. This time, it was a white woman, maybe in her 40s-50s, dirty blond hair, a little messy and shoulder length, a little stout, in a sleeping robe down to her ankles, and she was maybe a little over 5 feet tall. She said that she needed to use my bathroom because hers was out of order. When I walked to the door to escort her out, she just stood and gazed facing front of the door while I was feverishly trying to turn the light switch that was on the wall. Of course, it wasn't working. Then, the next thing I know, I'm back in bed, checking the time, and it's 4AM! Crazy, huh? How's that for imagination in a dream? When I left to check out this morning, the door to the room opposite of mine in the hallway was ajar and slightly open. It had been that way since the night before. Probably a maid who temporarily abandoned it. I was about to check in the room, especially the bathroom, but decided not to possibly interfere, in case someone did indeed inhabit it. Just heightened senses to feed dreams for all of these ghost stories about the Cavalier? Probably. I'm just glad I'm in my own bed tonight. I still love that place, though. It was better than the book I was reading!

my high school chorus stayed at the Cavalier while on an adjudication trip. We were booked in another hotel but had to change to the cavalier upon arrival. Unpacked, went to bed, and in the morning many of our choir members robes, which had been hanging in our closets were wet....not just damp, but wet. Who did this? Certainly not a cat....

I went to the Cavalier hotel, in Virginia Beach one time. There were more ghosts there than Gettysburg.
