Hope for a Hopeless Nation

Updated on September 11, 2014

September 11 Revisited

Please join me as we remember September 11, 2001. On that day unimaginable things took place, and the fabric of American society was forever changed.

We remember the sacrifice of those located in the trade towers, and the pentagon as invaders from the east ruthlessly and illogically attacked our land.

The Story of Flight 93

We remember the bravery and the action of those on board Flight 93 whose fate was to end in a field in Somerset County, in Pennsylvania.

Life is different now in America. We are more unsure of ourselves. We are colder, and less trusting. We have grown cynical - and yet we still stand in the greatest nation this world has ever known.

On that night 13 years ago, I remember attending a prayer meeting in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. People were turning back to God, and to the church house. We understood the need of returning to the God who gave us this nation 239 years ago. But that emphasis was soon forgotten.

We Are Out of Control

The warnings continued. We remember the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and Sandy. We still feel the effects of the economic crash of 2008. School violence has escalated beyond control. Families - the building block of societies have effecttively been destroyed. Abuse and violence raise their ugly heads on every side. Injustice and corruption are to be found everywhere, and we ask why?

The question arose many times in the aftermath of 9/11. Where was God when all of this was happening? The short answer is we sent Him away. We removed Him from our schools. We barred Him from our justice system, and government. The politically correct crowd has pushed Him out of the public arena.

We want to remove Him from our Pledge of Allegiance. We want to remove Him from our money, and then we ask – where was God on 9/11?

The History Behind St. Paul Chapel and George Washington

A One of a Kind Nation

America is a unique nation. God chose the nation Israel for His own, but America is the only nation that chose God for her own. George Washington warned the United States that if it did not uphold the eternal standard of God, our nation would not prosper. George Washington, gave his inauguration address in New York City on April 30, 1789 at Federal Hall. The message in his address was “The propitious smile of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself hath ordained.” My friend, we have lost the smile of God. WE have lost the smile of God.

The only way to regain that blessing is to return to the foundations of this nation – Trust in God. II Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

Our part: Humble ourselves before God. Realize it is not about us, but about Him; pray – oh, if this nation would return again to prayer; seek His face – He and he alone has the answers for a nation gone wild in self-indulgence, lust, and hedonism; turn from our wickedness – we must turn from ourselves and back to God and his plan for ourselves, for our families, for our communities, for our nation.

His part: To respond to our desperate pleas, forgive us, and heal this broken land.

Paul Washer- The Narrow Way

The Narrow Way

Jesus said the road is narrow and few there be that find it, but find it we must. The warnings of the past are quickly turning into the judgment of God, Jesus again said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

The Apostle Peter mentioned, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”

The answers are not to found in the government. They are not to be found in the economy, or even in reformation, but in Jesus Christ. I invite you to come to Him today.

Claim Him as your own, and turn back to the only Hope we have in America right now. We are, oh so close, to the point of no return. Right now God is warning. He is trying to get our attention once again. If we do not repent, His warnings will fade into His judgment.

Yes, we need to remember all that took place on that day 13 years ago when our great nation was so viciously attacked. The sacrifices were many, and significant. They were made for you.

Although we need to remember the past, we also need to look to the future. There is a new day waiting if we but look at ourselves, and return to the One who gave us the blessing of this great land. He, and He alone is the answer.

People see the Bible as a book of nonsensical do's and don't's. The fact is the Bible is given for our benefit. It is the owner's manual for living. When I purchase a vehicle, it comes with an owner's manual. It details how the vehicle is to be cared for. It will list certain oil types, the correct air pressure for the tires, perhaps even recommend a particular grade of gasoline.

The purpose of the book is to help us maintain the car, truck, or SUV we have just purchased. The manual is not to cramp our style in any way, but to enhance it. Likewise, the owner;s manual God has given us in the form of the Holy Scriptures is not to hurt us, but to help us go on to a wonderful life of peace and contentment.

Let me ask you - where is peace and contentment in the world today? It is not that God no longer cares about us, but we have thrown out the owner's manual. We live by our own traditions and philosophies rather than by truth. Truth is not relative, as some believe. Truth stands in, and of, and by itself, completely independent of what we may believe or think. It was upon this foundation of truth that the great nation America was founded.

We have left the truth for lies. We have traded dinner for dessert. The time is now to return to the Lord and His purposes.

It Is Your Turn

So what is next for America? The ball is in our court. If we return, I believe God will spare us a little while longer. If we choose to continue to go our own way, we can be sure judgment is just around the corner. God is consistent in His dealings with mankind. If America goes on in her rebellion against God and the owner's manual. we will without doubt reap what has been sown.

In the past thirteen years we have sown and are now reaping the harvest. There is little time left. Jesus informed us the harvest is white, ready to reap, but I wonder, has the bumper crop He intended largely wasted away unattended on the vine.

To those of you who read this, know that you are now responsible for your corner of the world - or your corner of America. We have wasted enough time. It is time to move. 9/11 is not about the past. it is about our future. Soon your life will be past. What will be the result? What will you leave behind?

      Hi MsDora,

To answer your question, I don't think we can. Hoping all is well with you and your family. Praying for God's blessing on both.

Very sobering, Bill. How can we push God away while we're asking for His protection? Glad you're better, so you can continue to sound the warning.

      Good Morning Rhonda,

So glad you were able to stop by. Good point - America is not the only troubled spot in the world, but troubled we are, and heading into more danger. Thank you for taking time out to read and comment.

      Hi Faith,

You said it! Time is so short, and before we know it time will be no more. What we know to do we must do now. We are certainly reaping what's been sown, but may we now sow good seed to be reaped in another day. Might we lay up treasures in Heaven. Thanks for stopping by and adding your thoughts.

Such a honest, powerful and inspirational message. We are reaping what we have sown. Bravo for the courage to speak the truth in the current political climate. It's not just America. It's going on all over the world. God bless and keep you.

Great hub of His truths. I pray that all who hear the truth, come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, for time is surely short. Our nation was once blessed by God, but now most have turned away, and we are reaping that choice. We must all make a choice to live for Him and share the Gospel, but it is an individual choice for sure. He is the way, the truth and the life. There is no other way.

      God bless. In His Love

lifegate: I see what you mean. If we acted more in the way we're supposed to, more people - both Christian and non-Christian - might follow our lead. That would make this country and the world a much better place.

      Hi Sheila,

I know what you're saying. We certainly can't make a choice for someone else, but I wonder if we Christians were the salt and light we are supposed to be if more people would be able to see Christ clearly. We've muddied the waters greatly, especially since 9/11. Just my thoughts. Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

I can agree that God's people do need to return to the life they have in Christ and live according to the guidelines he established. And, yes, part of our being a child of God is to spread the Gospel. Yet I'd have to say that even if every Christian stepped back onto the straight and narrow path, that isn't going to stop the evil things happening in and to this country. There will always be non-Christian citizens. I'm not saying we shouldn't be trying to get them to accept Christ, I just thinking about the saying "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". I know ... that's not in Scripture, but you'll find many similar sayings.

      Hi Linda,

Great to hear from you! Yes, I'm sure God is crying over what's taking place. I tend to focus on America, but I'm sure other nations are having struggles as well. Thanks for checking in and for sharing!

This is such a powerful message on what is happening in our nation. I too think there is time to change the course, but things are very scary in this nation and others as well. God must be crying as he watches his children destroy all that is good. A well written article Bill and I will be sharing it.

      Good morning rebeccamealey,

You're very welcome. Yes, "In God We Trust" is where we need to be. Unfortunately, I think at this time we're far from Him and His blessing. but that can be turned around if we turn around in repentance. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts.

      Hi Lori,

It's always easier to blame someone else. If the 21st century, American Christian church would open her eyes though, she'd see where the problem is - herself. America got exactly what we asked for when we elected Obama and other godless politicians.

On the other hand, I wonder, did we elect him at all, or are we just led to believe we still elect our officials. Sometimes there seems to be a power bigger than America herself that runs the nation. Anyway, one way or another the end is near which means Heaven is also near. I can live with that! Hopefully I'll get some TGAF stuff up this weekend. Thanks as always for stopping by.

      Good Morning Jackie,

Whether people want to consider it or not, the Truth is, Jesus is the only way to eternal life. It doesn't matter what they believe. The truth never changes. It doesn't matter what they deem as realistic. Truth never changes. It doesn't matter what's logical to them, truth never changes, and Truth is Jesus Christ. Glad you know Him!

      Hi Bill,

I do believe we should each ask the question, and then come up with an acceptable answer. American life moves so fast, I wonder how many will take the time to consider what's going on, but I'm glad for the few here that will. Thanks for taking time out!

You're quite welcome, Jeff. No, we can't afford to ignore the God of this nation any longer, but the problem is we do. There's a heavy price to pay for that, and if we don't get turned around, it will soon be time to pay up. As always, thanks for taking the time to stop by.

I find it so easy to blame the president and other irresponsible politicians, and people in the world with unbiblical agendas, and they do have a lot to answer for, but the bottom line is, they don't walk with God, therefore they can't be expected to be godly when they have no god but themselves or things that God does not approve. The Church needs a trip to the woodshed for a long list of transgressions that have not helped to further God's kingdom. I am first in line I think. To be salt and light in this nation, God expects us to love, forgive, build up, reach out, be faithful to God, etc. I heard a Christian radio host up here today and he was saying Christian's can be so mean sometimes about nonbelievers. I thought about how I rake certain prominent non believing people over the coals either vocally or in my heart in a very un-Christ like way rather than pray for them. I was convicted for sure. People cannot be won to God by such methods.

Nonetheless, I don't know if there is time to stop the hand of God from his judgment on this nation. I need to clean house on my part and trust him through whatever come our way. Great last paragraph. Let me know how TGAF went.

The reason for the catastrophe lies in the first line in second last paragraph of the hub. We have lost our faith in ancient proverbs like, " Nip the evil in the bud ".

I love to hear you preach Christ; Bill! We read so many nice Christian articles here and it is all about loving everyone and God but they seem to always avoid His Son and it is the only way to everlasting life and it always make me so sad because you know that people are not reading their bible. Maybe they are putting in more time than we are being good doers and making "church" a big part of their life, but they would be better off spending their time in the bible and finding salvation for them and their family and these friends of theirs living in sin that try so hard to defend that are headed straight to hell too. If they love them they would give them the truth; but they don't know it and don't seem to want to. Love will get none of us anywhere unless it is for the Son of God and I just love to hear someone not afraid to say it! God bless you.
