Horoscopes: Fact or Fiction?

Updated on July 18, 2011

There is a lot of misinformation out there on the subject of horoscopes. I've met people who read their horoscope religiously in the paper every day, often shaping their lives around that tiny generic blurb. Many others say that astrology is not a valid way to determine anything. I'd agree that "what's your sign?", a classic pickup line, is an extremely cheesy way to introduce yourself, but is there any truth to the idea that people born under specific astrological time periods have common traits?

Your sign is determined by where the sun falls in your birthchart. The belief is that is that each sign is a symbol that we pass and engender on our journey to karmic fruition.

Example of Horoscope Chart

How are Horoscopes Decided?

The word "horoscope" refers to the wheeled zodiac of animals that represent the twelve astrological signs. These animals coincided with specific symbolic constellations. They don't anymore, due to the changing equinoxes. However, the sun and moon still move through the signs each in their turn and it is this that makes astrology continue to be a possibility.

Your sign's characteristics are determined by its Element and its Quality. The elements are earth, air, fire, and water. The qualities are Mutable, Fixed, or Cardinal.

Your horoscope is determined by the placement of your sign and its angle to the astrological houses on the inner part of the zodiac wheel. There are many different house systems used by different astrologers.

A Personal Choice

This makes finding a horoscope that works for you a personal choice. There are more belief systems than we can imagine out there and each person has to determine for himself what to believe. Astrology is a science of numbers and geometry. (Not my strong suit, I'm afraid.) It is one of the oldest of the natural sciences, dating back to prehistory.

Is everything cyclical, tom? I'll have to brush up on my "The Lion King" lyrics. "Circle Of Life" stuff. My mother still believes the moon landing was staged and that Oprah is synonymous with Mother Theresa. People's belief systems are funny things. I believe in using the stars as a guide. Some people believe everything they need to know about the universe is contained in one book that has been transcripted and translated countless times by various religious leaders who have every reason to lie. (I absolutely believe in God, by the way.)

Inriguing. I follow my horocsope religiously and I'm not sure if it's all in the mind, but they are always freakishly true! Thanks for a great hub.

This is a very interesting article. I've never believed in this stuff, but that doesn't mean I do not find it fascinating. You did a great job on this. Voting this up. :)

I am not a believer though I admit to reading my horoscope occasionally. They seem rather like fortune cookies -- can be taken to fit anything you want. Thanks for this explanation. Lynda

Happy that you got something out of it Voyance! Amazing how many people believe in following their horoscopes, yet don't have the first idea how they are determined.
