Hosea: love story
The story of Hosea is such a beautiful bitter sweet love story. It is the story of a prophet of God named Hosea who is told by God to go and marry Gomer who was a woman of whoredom or harlotry. The bible does not go into detail about her personality but some say that it was Gomer's heart that was full of harlotry not her actions at the time that Hosea married her. This however is not the main point, the point was that she would not be faithful to one man she would sell herself and her love for jewelry and a place of status in society just like the people of Israel were forsaking their God always looking to other false Gods for prosperity and prestige. Hosea was supposed to give his heart entirely to love a woman that he knew would have eyes for another.
To God the people of Israel were like his one true love, only that she kept on being unfaithful to him with other men. Just like Hosea loved Gomer so did God love his church and his people. Even though he knew that our hearts were inclined to sin and we were not fully committed to Him he loved us anyway with a love so pure that it was enough to wash away all our sins. He knew we would cheat so to speak but he did not hesitate to fully commit to us and to make us his.
God gave his words of wisdom to Hosea so that he could minister to his people in the temple. At that time Israel was divided into two kingdoms, the north and the south. The people of the north were very unfaithful to God, because times were good they forgot the giver of all things their savior and they started following other Gods. The word of the Lord came to Hosea to warn the people against their sinful ways and to turn back to God before judgement visited them but their ears were stopped they would not listen to Hosea.
Gomer left Hosea for another man and Hosea understood the pain that God felt when His people were chasing after other Gods just like Gomer was chasing after other men. Men and Gods that did not bring fulfillment and satisfaction just a mirage of possible pleasure. Despite all that Hosea was to still love his wife just like God still loved his church.
After Gomer's lovers were finished with her they discarded her and sold her off to an auction to be sold to the highest bidder. Her beauty was gone and no one wanted her except for a homer of barley, but Hosea came to buy back a wife that was already his for everything that he had, 15 pieces of silver and a homer and a half of barley. Even though she wasn't worth that much just a homer of barley to him she was worth more than all his possessions.
Even though we had moved away from the grace of God and had prostituted ourselves to sin God sent all that he had, his only begotten son as an atonement for our sins to repurchase us to Himself. Even though we were not worthy with his amazing love he bought us with his precious son.
God loved his imperfect church perfectly. Even when we were still sinners He sent his only son Jesus that he may die for us. He loved us when we wronged him and he also loved us when we did not love him. His love is not like human love that his dependent and conditional. God loves us perfectly and without condition.
