The Spiritual Gift of Mercy

Do you have the gift of mercy? Do you have a friend who possesses this gift?

Although, as God's kids, we are all instructed to show mercy to one another, the child of God who is gifted with Mercy does so with all of her heart. This gift, because it is from God, experiences no struggle against being judgmental or harsh. Mercy loves, forgives, and believes in you, even when you don't believe in yourself.

You see, mercy does not focus on sin or failure. Mercy finds a way to look beyond the fault, or sin, to see the need.

Manifestations of the Gift of Mercy

The spiritual gift of mercy is manifest in patience and compassion toward people who are suffering. The merciful heart is concerned with the physical and the spiritual needs of the one hurting.

If you possess the gift of mercy you will find your emotions triggered with the trials and sufferings of others. If you have the gift of mercy, you weep with those who weep, you find a way to walk beside people over long periods of time and stick to them to see them through their healing process.

The one gifted with mercy is the one who exemplifies the hands and feet of Jesus to the brokenhearted.

God grants mercy to certain of his children to comfort the hurting in their time of suffering. The child of God, who possesses the gift of mercy has a great capacity to bear the burdens of those who are hurting. The merciful are ultra in-tune to the feelings and trials of others and can quickly detect what state another is in.

The Motivations behind the Gifts of the Spirit

To illustrate the gifts of the spirit allow me to pose a real life scenario. I will utilize several of the gifts to Illustrate. Suppose you are at dinner with a group of friends. In the course of eating and conversing, one of the guests spills their milk.

Molly the Merciful, observes the pain in Clumsy Katie's face. She turns to Katie and as she pats her arm says, "Katie, honey, don't worry, everyone spills their milk at one time or another. It's okay, no one cares." Molly is concerned with Katie's emotions and seeks to save her from embarrassment. She watches Molly's reactions and makes it her mission to calm her.

Peter the Prophet speaks with authority. "Now Katie, if you had moved your milk behind your plate, your chances of spilling would be nil. You could have avoided this whole mess by thinking ahead." Peter see's what went wrong and what could have been done differently. Peter comes across as harsh because he doesn't consider emotions, only facts.

Oscar the Organizer goes into action as he gives direction to each of the guests. He takes care of the situation by employing everyone's help. Oscar see's the problem and uses his problem solving skills to get everyone working together to bring about a solution.

Susie the Servant jumps up immediately and runs to the kitchen. She grabs a towel and cleans up the mess. She doesn't say a word and draws no attention to herself. She has a servant's heart and seeks to serve others in whatever way she is able.

Edward the Exhorter encourages Katie as he reveals ways to learn from this accident. He says, "Katie, ya know that we all learn through mishaps, it's part of the maturity process." Edward suggests different approaches to avoid this situation in the future.

You see, each gift, given by God, comes at a situation with a different motivation. Katie seek's to comfort, Peter seeks to unmask the problem and restore order, Oscar's goal is to fix the problem by employing everyone's help, Susie's motivation is to demonstrate love by meeting a practical need, and Edward's desire is to see Katie grow and mature.

Jesus is the Supreme Example of Mercy

The Bible tells us the wages of sin is death .. BUT .. the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Jesus made a way, when there seemed to be no way. We all have turned our own way, yet, while we were still in our sin, Christ died for us. He died to secure our eternal salvation. He gave up his life so that you and I could find forgiveness and eternal security.

Here are just a couple of verses about the Mercy of Jesus for us:

"The Lord is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made." Ps. 145:9

"He (Jesus) saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit," Titus 3:5

If you have the Gift of Mercy do not stand in the place of the Savior. Do not think you can carry your friends pain. For the merciful, it is all too easy to pick it up, internalize it and allow it to weigh us down.

We, as humans, are not designed to carry people's burden's. It benefits no-one to be a pain carrier. We must learn to release the burden to Jesus. He is equipped to carry pain.

If you have a friend who possesses the Gift of Mercy, do not overload them with every detail of your pain. Be aware that their emotions are totally empathizing with you and they feel your pain. Encourage your friend by telling her that you are giving the burden to Jesus and you expect her to do the same.

Being responsible with the gift's God lovingly bestows on his children is very important. If we misuse our gift, it becomes a stumbling block to us and to others.

Hi Lori, Thank you so much for the encouragement. One of my gifts is the gift of mercy too. I used to carry people's pain and God taught me that I was not helping the person or myself by doing so. So, the revelation about releasing the pain to Jesus was one of the most important points I wanted to share about the gift of mercy. I'm glad it spoke to you - made my day. :)

The gift of discernment is another gift, from our Father, which I have identified, so you are right on! Thank you for your sweet heart. May God use your gift(s) to glorify his name and to bless all who know you!

Susan, this was truly wonderful. You did a great job illustrating the gift of mercy, as well as the other gifts, in the spill the milk scenario and it made me laugh.

I have been told have the gift of mercy and your comments about not taking on people's pain is a very real problem. So your advice not to bear the full burden and give it to Jesus is well said. I need to have better filters and set better boundaries for myself. Thanks for this lovely article. Lord Bless you. You may also have the gift of discernment.
