HOW NEARLY DYING TAUGHT ME TO LIVE

Updated on February 6, 2012

Thrown violently to the floor, I didn’t know what hit me.

By 2004, I’d lived in northern Idaho for a year. Moving there to be in another relationship, which failed almost before it started, I was heartbroken – again.

Smashing into the night table; my head ached. Nightmare?

What had picked me up and hurled me across the room like a tin can in a tornado?

The UNIVERSE had kicked it up a notch. While trying to get to the phone, I saw something I’d never seen before this night, but I instantly recognized it. THE FACE OF DEATH! There was no mistaking it. Surrounded by a blanket of darkness hovered a white skeletal face. It didn’t speak, it just hung there. I yelled, if only in my own head, “GO AWAY!”

I needed only to get to the phone and this thing, THE FACE, needed to get out of my way!

In response, THE FACE disappeared. However, within minutes, It reappeared. “Damn it – GO AWAY – I have work to do!” I don’t know what I meant, but I knew that I didn’t want to die.

THE FACE had come to claim me, but I wasn’t ready to go. Why now? Is this how Death works? Lying on the floor in a cold sweat with no help in sight and THE FACE staring me down, I desperately wanted to know why.

Now, THE FACE surprisingly obeyed. As quickly as it had interrupted my fall from the grace of slumber, it was gone.

I’d moved to Idaho to be with a man who I secretly hoped would rescue me from life’s woes. My EGO urged me to do it, as it had done in countless previous relationships. I gave up my life to merge with another and had the same sad and disappointing results each time. Unknowingly, I still searched for the love I didn’t get from my father, moving through life determined to find and impress the right man with my love and nurturing. I had grown weary. Dying would be easy; living not so much.

Nearly dying taught me to live! I recovered with a focus on loving myself first, trusting my Higher Power and become a student of human nature, men and most importantly, MYSELF.
