How To Prove You Are A Christian - Part 2
“These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, …” 1 John 5:13
Evidence #2. Do You Practice Sin or Righteousness?
Complete repentance is a non-optional proof of life.
"My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. . .” 1 John 2:1
How Do you Know if You Repented?
“If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.” 1 John 2:29
Repentance means to turn from sin and change to obedience to God. You change your mind about your life! For example, a thief repents when he decides stealing is wrong, changes his course in life, and instead helps others. "Let the thief steal no more, but rather let him be industrious, making an honest living with his own hands, so that he may be able to give to those in need." Eph 4:28 AMP
“And you know that He [Jesus] was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor know Him. Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.” 1 John 3:5-7
Without Repentance You Are Still Going to Hell!
“He who sins is of the devil, for the devil sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil." 1 John 3:8
Evidence of Salvation is Repentance!
“Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.” 1 John 3:9
Evidence of a Child of God or the Devil?
“In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.” 1 John 3:10
Repentance is not optional!
“We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.” 1 John 5:18
Evidence #3 Do you Obey or Disobey God‘s Commands?
The Great Commission is a non-optional and proof of eternal life.
A change in lifestyle is normal
We think of sinners as liars, adulteries, and murderers only. That is why John continues with this next area of evidence, obedience to God’s commands. A Christian does not just stop lying and cheating, they also begin working on assignments God gives them while He builds His Kingdom.
“… by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments” 1 John 2:3
The Fake Christians Make Claims but Do Not Obey!
He who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in Him.” 1 John 2:4
Evidence of Salvation!
“But whoever keeps His Word, truly the love of God is perfected in Him. By this we know that we are in Him.” 1 John 2:5
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, "teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJ)
What is Lawlessness?
“whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.” 1 John 3:4
So we know that disobeying and ignoring God’s commandments is lawlessness. Refusing to submit to the law, the commands of the Lord Jesus, is rebellion against God's authority over you. Just like an American citizen is required to obey the laws of the land or suffer the wrath of the government, men are required to serve the living God.
Sin is Disobeying God!
"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven." Matthew 7:21 (NKJ)
The Evidence of Salvation is Obedience!
"Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?‘ "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!'" Matt 7:21-23
What Does God Command?
“And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as he gave us commandment.” 1 John 3:23
"teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. Matthew 28:18-20 (NKJ)
Make sure you thoroughly study the Gospels, Matthew through John and establish your life on the commands Jesus gave to all His disciples.
Only a True Christian Can Consistently Obey
“Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him.” 1 John 3:24a
It is Easy for a Believer to Obey Christ's Commands
“For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.” 1 John 5:3
