How advanced our ancestors were?

Updated on December 9, 2011

Discipline is lacking now.

Sometimes I wonder at the treasure trove of knowledge our ancestors have gained in spite of the absence of sophisticated gadgets technology offer to us now. No doubt, the present day achievement of science and technology is really baffling to the mind. Computer and internet with mobile communication have taken us to the farthest corner of the world in no time, yet we can never under estimate the knowledge of our ancestors in almost all the fields. We must understand that to start with zero is a stupendous task. But present day information network brings us the latest trend in invention in any field and we can always keep us abreast with the up to date information. Know that the scientists in the beginning of 19th and 20th centuries, have to start their research from the start since there was no material available to them at that time. Likewise the physicians of old time has struggled to diagnosis any new disease in the absence of any recorded documents. Hence they had to try newer venues of treatment by trial and error methods only.

We have evidence of our ancient physicians tried different methods to treat any disease and even they performed certain basic procedures in medicine with success. They had the knowledge of herbs which had their origin in ancient "Atharvana Veda". In fact, the fourth Veda was a treasure house of knowledge in many different fields of present day science. Astronomy was one such object through which they were able to calculate the movement of planets, positions of stars and they could pinpoint the time of occurance of eclipse to the correct of a second! They base their calculations from resources in the form of stanzas from Atharvana Veda. Astrology, space travel, rockets and weapons, Aeroflot were constructed with the knowledge of Atharvana Veda. Ancient architecture was founded based on couplets and stanzas from this Veda. There were many formulas for the present day mechanics and equilibrium of forces. Without the knowledge of forces, no structure can be constructed. Their buildings were strong and steady though constructed with lime and surkhi mortars. We understand that their buildings and irrigation structures lasted more than 100 years.

In the present day, we have structures with steel and reinforced concrete which are supposed to last for minimum 50 years or more. Hence our ancestors had better knowledge of structures and the way they constructed the temples, churches and mosques attracts every one for their architectural concepts and beauty. They selected materials for construction with an eye on strength and work ability

Though they had used palm leaves or bamboos for recording their knowledge, even after many years they are preserved in present day museums. They need to be maintained properly. All art forms were invented by them. Dance, Music and drama were invented with skills. The musical notes of present day is based on the research done by our ancestors who were master composers. Though their instruments looked a little crude, the musical sounds were enthralling. Only we have to preserve them for posterity.

In conclusion, our ancestors were more knowledgeable than the present generation. They lived healthy life by following nature. Their food habits were based on the available grains, fruits, vegetables and diary products. They changed their food habits based on different seasons. They have invented newer crops, oil seeds and vegetables. They tended cattle and all lived amicably in groups. They utilized water and fire in an intelligent way. But unfortunately, to day there is no discipline. All want freedom to do what they like but they are unaware that "Freedom comes with responsibility. We have lost peace and happiness due to greed and unlimited desires. Technology instead of helping the modern man make him lazy and easy going. Human society can live in peace only when there is discipline and devotion. Education must breed humility!

Unassuming yet all knowing!

Another wonderful hub. Don't know why you don't have more followers. You need to spread the word. Perhaps visiting others hubs and commenting, if you haven't already and posting a bit in the forums would help. People need to read this.

You are always representing the views and philosophy of life with simple and clear way of understanding to oneself. The Vedas are the treasures of our nation not only, but also to the rest of the world.
