How to Properly Serve Our Lord

Updated on June 23, 2015

Serving Our Lord

In John chapter 9, there is a story about a man Jesus healed of blindness. As he went on his way, leaping for joy and praising the Lord, he met some Pharisees. They criticized him for displaying such behavior on the Sabbath. They asked him who had made his blind eyes see and who he believed Jesus to be. The answer is answered in verse 25 where he boldly put questions to the Pharisees.

"He answered and said, 'Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.'"

Today, we might ask ourselves the same question posed in verse 27. What does it take to be a true disciple of Jesus? What is the duty of a disciple and what kind of service should we render to the Lord? If we are going to serve Him, how can we be effective in our service?

There are too many people today who want to sit at the table of God's blessings ,but are not willing to go out into the field and do the work of God. Often, people start out to serve the Lord, but their zeal soon fades. Why is this?

Being a disciple of Jesus takes more than just being saved. The Bible discloses many characteristics a disciple should possess. A true disciple denies self.

As we can see, a true disciple is one who is acquainted with self-denial, which goes against human nature. Therefore it is something we must learn if we are going to be a disciple. To deny self means to put the Lord's will over your own. It means to love the Lord more than the material possessions, and a desire to please Him. Contrary to secular beliefs, disciples don't .

The secret to living a joyous Christian life is found in the above verse. You cannot be a disciple without self-denial. Some believe living a Christian life is a burden. The Bible doesn't teach that. However, it does teach the life of the Christian is characterized by joy and blessing, not burden and hardship. Cross bearing means finding God's will for your life and doing it completely and faithfully. Read the following verse showing what Jesus did.

Jesus did the will of His Father. If there was a cross for Jesus, there is also a cross which represents the Father's for us. In other words, there is a mission for your life if you are saved. You can't truly be a disciple unless you are serious about doing God's will.

A disciple is one who struggles to follow Jesus as an example.

In Jesus's day, this was called "separation." It was understood Christians lived a life of separation from this world. However, this doesn't mean that we are to be "above" the world, only different from the world.
