Hello, I am Christian and I love to read the bible. I want to be able to share the word of God through writing and hopefully, inspire others

How to Recover from Depression

" He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds" --Psalm 147:3
" He heals the broken-hearted and binds up their wounds" --Psalm 147:3

Do you believe that God can help you recover from Depression? If you open your eyes, ears, if you open your senses you will see how God works in your life when you are suffering. He may show different ways and use different people and different things to help you. If you accept him and look for him you will find him. If you ask for comfort, he will give it to you. He might send you different signs and messages to help you. God may send people to encourage you. All you have to do is to believe and have faith! God loves you and he won't let you suffer forever. You are not alone!

So what will we do to recover from depression? Let's Ask the Bible!

7 Ways to Recover from Depression

" The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." -Psalm 34:18
" The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." -Psalm 34:18

1. Ask For Help!

" Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. for everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened."

Matthew 7:7-8 NIV

God is only one prayer away!
God is only one prayer away!

The first step is as simple as asking for help! Will someone help you if you don't ask for help? Well, God will help you even if you don't ask for help. He knows when you are suffering and he loves you that's why he won't let you suffer forever. He won't let you suffer more than you can take.If God will help you even if you don't ask for it, what more if you ask for help!

Remember that God is only one prayer away. You don't need a phone or a wifi connection to call for him!

2. Believe

" But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord."

James 1:6-7 NIV

You ask for help but you still doubt if your help will come to you. In this case, don't expect that God will answer your prayers immediately! Believing gives us strong faith and faith gives us hope and it is Hope that help us to recover faster. Hope makes you become more positive and positivity greatly helps in overcoming depression.

If you ask, then believe that someday you will be fine and your suffering will definitely end, Isn't that being positive? Now, tell me who can recover from depression for being negative. Can a person recover by not believing he will recover? Will you become happy while thinking about sadness? No one can recover by being negative! So believe like what you asked has already been granted and think of happy moments, think of how happy you can be once you overcome your suffering, It will surely help.

3. Share It to Friends

Friends and family are always there
Friends and family are always there

" Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. "

Philippians 4:14 NIV

Talk about it, share your problems. Whether you tell them to your family, friends, love one, or even your pet dog, It will make you feel better. Talking about your problem is proven way to help you from recovering from depression. You can share your troubles with them. So let them know and let them comfort you. God brings them to your life for a reason, and that is to help you in your problems, to encourage you, to support you, and to lean on them when you are troubled. It never hurts to share your problems. So don't be afraid and don't be shy. If you have friends, family or loved one, share your troubles with them.

Surround yourself with people who think positively. They can encourage you. Also, attend the church worship regularly even if you feel depressed. You can usually find these positive people there. Share your troubles and listen to their advice. You will be surprised how uplifting it can be.

4. Visit God's Home

" Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."

Matthew 11:28 NIV

Even if you are feeling depressed, don't forget to come to the church for worship. The church is the temple of God, it is his home, it is the place where he is closest to us. He will give you rest and comfort as he welcomes you in his temple.

When I was sad and depressed, I never failed to attend worship. It is because, in the church, I can feel his wonderful presence, and his love. I can hear his message that he is trying to tell me through his words that are shared and preached by our minister. It never fails to amuse me that whenever I feel sad, the topics of the sermon is always about encouragement. It is amazing! It is as if God is talking to me and encouraging me. As I listened to the sermon and advice of the preacher, I temporarily forget my sadness. And after of every worship, I always felt encouraged and uplifted.

Another reason to attend worship even if you are sad Satan target those who experience negative emotions!

" Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings."

1 Peter 5:8-9 NIV

Because people are in their most vulnerable state when they are suffering from depression, sadness, and any intense negative emotions. And the devil likes this and uses this negativity to draw you away from God. So the more you experience sadness, the more you should stand firm in your faith! Seek God more, especially in times of depression so that you will not fall to the devil's scheme!

Resist the devil and be strong so that he will be unable to devour you. Remember that God will always be with you!

" When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."

Isaiah 43:2 NIV

5. Help Others

" Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

Galatians 6:2 NIV

Help Others
Help Others

When you are depressed, help others. It will help you recover quicker. When helping others, How do you feel? Isn't it uplifting when you see happy people? When you are surrounded with happy people, will you still be sad? It's hard to cry when you are surrounded by happy people who are laughing at your jokes right? Its hard to become sad if you are surrounded by the people you helped become happy! If you help others, the more they will appreciate you and the more it will make you happy. In fact, there is this term called "Helper's High" which means the feeling you get from easing someone's pain and stress, and this can give you a mood boost!

" Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter - when you see the naked, to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard."

Isaiah 58:7-8 NIV

The Bible also tells us that helping others help your healing quickly appear!

According to the book " The How of Happiness" Written by Sonja Lyubomirsky, a Psychology professor at the University of California, " People who have a tendency toward depression can often help themselves by helping others."

It is amazing how a simple act of Kindness make a great impact in recovery from depression.

So help yourself by helping others!

6. You Can Do It!

" I can do everything through him who gives me strength."

Philippians 4:13 NIV

Believe in Yourself!
Believe in Yourself!

God gave you the power greater than you could imagine! If you believe, you can change your life as well as others. You must believe in God who gives you strength and also to yourself because God gave you strength. Use this strength to end your suffering and believe you can do it!

Do you know that your faith is powerful?

" He replied, 'Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.'"

Matthew 17:20 NIV

How small is the mustard seed? It is very small!

And imagine that if you have faith even as small as a mustard seed, you can move the mountains in your life. You can recover from this sadness and recover in your depression. This is the power that God has given us and with strong faith, nothing will be impossible for us!

Remember that all things start when human believes they can do it. Like for example, In the past, no one believed that a chunk of metal can fly in the sky, How can a heavy metal float in the air? But Someone did and built an airplane! It is the Wright Brothers Orville and Wilbur. If they did not believe that someday a chunk of metal can fly them into the skies, do you think airplane would exist today? If no one believed that this thing can be made to fly, it will be impossible to make this chunk of a metal fly. The first step of doing the impossible is believing that it is possible!

So if humans are capable of doing these amazing things by just believing and having faith, how much more can a man suffering from depression!

If that man believes that he will recover, he will recover!

God is truly amazing and generous to give us this power.

7. Remember Jesus!

Jesus Suffered For Our Sake!
Jesus Suffered For Our Sake!

" He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed."

Isaiah 53:3-5 NIV

Lord Jesus suffered. He was beaten, tortured, mocked, and crucified. He died on the cross, for what? To give us sinners peace! The suffering and punishment we deserve, he carries it all. No ordinary man can endure this pain but he did! and after suffering all of these, what happened? where is he?

" Which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church,"

Ephesians 1:20-22 NIV

God seated Lord Jesus at his right hand in heaven! not only that, he was given the authority far above all rule, power, dominion, every title that can be given, and God placed all things under his feet, because Lord Jesus endured the suffering that no man can endure.

Always Remember

Remember that no matter how harsh our suffering is, we can always recover from the sadness that we feel. We can expect good things to happen after our troubles. There is always a rainbow after the rain!

I hope this article helped encourage someone

God bless and Stay Strong!

I was not trying to offend you, nor doubt your sincerity, but your theology is incorrect, you accept doctines of man instead of doctrines of Christ I was only correcting the things that are not correct according to scripture. I am a Disciple of Christ and to see Him falsely represented in any way offends Him and me. The scripture you mention was true when Jesus spoke it as He was under the law at that time, but not now. That scripture though it appears in the new testament. takes place under the age of the law. the new covenant (the age we live in) does not actually begin until Jesus died and was resurrected. When the temple veil was supernaturally torn in two is when God left buildings and He will never return to a building made with hands.

Matt 5:48 just as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Matt 6:9 Our Father in heaven,

Matt 7:11 how much more will your Father who is in heaven

His home is in heaven until the end of this age though His Spirit is found in all true disciples of Christ. At the end of this final age of man God will move His home and throne from heaven down to the new earth and live there WITH His sons for eternity.

Rev 22:1-5 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. 4 They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. 5 There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.

It is time that truth of scripture replaces the doctrines and lies that the men you respect (God does not, nor do I respect) have been spreading for 300 or so years and the gullible swallow as the easy way, instead of following scripture and learning TRUTH from the ONLY source of ALL truth, the Holy Spirit of God.

It is time for people to realize that there is only one way to God and His eternal Kingdom and NO OTHER MAN can give you access, ONLY JESUS CHRIST can grant anyone access to God. Jesus Christ is found in His disciples not in "churches of men". Only true disciple of Christ, affirmed by HIM are commissioned by Him to make disciples for Him. Individuals only, His disciples are ordered to make His disciples.

Matt 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

The door to eternal life is only open to the end of this age when He returns all authority to His father.

1 Cor 15:24-26 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.

Men make disciples of themselves by find those that believe their doctrines and bringing them to their "churches". Disciples of Christ make disciples of men by accepting only those that will accept the Doctrines of Christ and teach them to follow Christ on their own by the Holy Spirit, so thy no longer need men..

The only men in this age that are of any use in the kingdom are not anointed by men. They are anointed by God, through Jesus Christ the Lord of this age. Appointment by men only confirms they teach the doctrines of the men that they follow. Those that follow Christ need no papers because the signs follow them and are their proof of who sent them..

Mark 16:16-18 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

I am sorry Brother Charlie if some part of my article may have offended you or contradicted to your beliefs, I truly respect your beliefs and it was never my intention to say something against your doctrines. I swear I made this article out of pure good intention to give inspiration and encouragement to those who suffer from depression.

And regarding to the term house of God, I based it on what is written in Luke 2:49 and Matthew 21:13 where Lord Jesus himself called the temple "My Father's House" but I did not expect that this will discourage you and I am sorry for that.

My point is that worhip can help those who suffer from depression. It is because it is healthy to be surrounded by people who can teach you to be positive and to encourage you. And it is in the church where people gather to worship. It is the perfect place to find these people. I also believed that preachers, pastors, ministers, priest or anyone who teaches the Word of God are messengers of God. They can give encouraging advice. But it seems that my point is not fully understood so I will revise this article.

God's home is in heaven. He left the building made with hands 2000 year ago. God's Spirit is found in His sons, Christ and the true disciples of Christ. Attending "church", a building with clergy , can do nothing for you, God is not there, there is no building called a "church and no clergy in the church of Jesus Christ. "churches are a work of men, divisions that separate people, Christ brings His people together.

church is 2 or more sons meeting anytime and anywhere. Jesus never said to make disciples of the works of men that separate His people, He commanded His disciples (brothers) to go and make disciples for Him , not disciples of men in the divided false church system. this article DID NOT ENCOURAGE ME , it discouraged me to see these false doctrines of apostate men being encouraged. The biggest enemy of the true disciples of Christ is as it was in Jesus day, the professional clergy and their "churches of men"
