How to be an Effective Witness for God

Updated on January 18, 2011

Seeking the Lost

I recently started a thread entitled "Are you a good person?" The purpose was to get people to see themselves as God see us, as sinners in need of his grace, few got it, but it made everyone who took the test think and that was the main objective.

How do you witness? Do you mention hell? Do you mention the Commandments? Do you make the person see himself or herself as God sees them? Do you only mention His love? What about Gods Holiness and wrath? Did you know that out of 100 people who make a 'decision' to follow God 90 will fall away from God? Why? I believe whoever witnessed to them only told them the good part and did not let them know that it wouldn't always be easy or popular to follow God, but to holdfast his word. Therefore, when they hit a rough patch they stumble, and resorted back to their old ways, because it's "easier" and less confrontational.

This hub is not telling you to force God down throats of anyone, but to be an honest witness. Tell them the whole truth about God, and not to "water it down". So they will make an educated choice to follow God or not. In the forum, I received many responses, but this one spoke volumes to me read the response of an atheist when she forced to see herself through God’s eyes. Jenblacksheep said, "This is what PISSES ME OFF about religion! Who are you to tell me that I'm not a good person? Of course I've lied to people (sometimes lying is the kindest thing), I've probably stolen things although I don't actually remember any particular occasion, of course I've felt lust (who the hell hasn't) and ye, I've hated one or two people, they deserved it. But I'm NOT a bad person. I don't do things out of malice or spite. I try very hard not to be rude or disrespectful to other people (even when they deserve it). I stand up for myself, my beliefs and my friends. I don't ever hurt other people nor do things that I think might hurt someone. AND most importantly, I don't do or not do these things because some questionable higher being says I should or shouldn’t do them. I (and only I) am accountable for my actions and I do what I think is right because I think it is right! The question is are YOU a good person since you only act in a good way because God tells you to and because you want to get to heaven!"

After telling her I would pray for her she went on to say "Well I'm 100% sure I'll be spending eternity in a brown box about 6ft under, but I appreciate the concern ... sorta. Heaven is not for me. Anyway, I have been assured by many concerned theists that I will get to heaven despite not believing in God (although I have been told by one that I'm going to hell). So it looks like I'm in a better position than you as I get the best of both worlds! And please don't pray for me ... that is so incredibly patronizing" Does this sound familiar? "Look at this delusion! Humanity is so full of itself, so arrogant, so self righteous. How can we see ourselves as liars, thieves, adulterers, and still think that our day with the One True God will be ok, its nonsense. True, so why do we continue if this will be the response? If God has truly entered your life your heart breaks for the lost we just have to try to reach them. When you are confronted by someone like this don't be discouraged, ask yourself why? Are they angry with God? Did they have a bad experience with a church? Are they so full of conviction that when they are asked think about their life they believe you are judging them, and since we believe that they can stop thinking about their fate and put the focus on you? Or are they so bent on "living their life" that the thought of someone being in control of all this threatens their choices so much that it's easier for them to deny his existence entirely then to submit to GOD? Submit is an interesting word, ask any atheist what the word submit means they will say to bow down and give in to. But if you ask a Christian that same question, they will say it means to go under the protection of. Interesting.

If you witness here on Hubpages, or anywhere you will be outnumbered, sometimes force to stand alone against evil, but take solace in that you are doing God's work and he is with you. Romans 10:15 "And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!" and Mark 16:15 He said to them "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation." Even though a person may choose to be an Atheist, a New Ager, unrepentant sinner or any thing in opposition the Jesus Christ and his word they will discover an endless desire for peace and approval, but will not find it (Isaiah 48:22). They will need to surround themselves with others who continually reaffirm their choice not to follow Christ in order to numb their conscience about the lies they have embraced. You will never see an Atheist alone, you will never see an unrepentant sinner alone and you will never see a New Ager alone.

They have to constantly jump into religious forums. Have you ever wondered why? If they get more people to agree with them they feel vindicated and justified for their unbelief. Darkness will alawys side with darkness. But it's only a veil so they can find some "comfort in numbers" against God. God doesn't guarantee easy lives 11 of the 12 apostle were killed for their belief in Jesus. Our reward is not here in the world it's in Heaven. Mat. 7:13-14, "Enter by the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it." So as you witness here or anywhere remember to tell them the whole truth about God, and if/when, your message is rejected keep in mind that they are not rejecting you they are rejecting God. You plant a seed pray that God reaps the harvest, and continue to pray for that person because no matter what they believe they will have to face God on Judgment Day.

Interesting Article and I admire your Boldness. I am a Christian but always feel reluctant to "witness" due to people's hostility. I also think Christianity can be seen in one's attitude.

If i have someone who is receptive, I can talk to them until the cows come home. lol. But I do not like getting into debates with people who are very sacarstic about religion. Hence, I try not to respond to religious threads. There are some threads, if I really answered them, from my heart - Heads would roll. lol.

      Well done. :)

Timely word spiderpam! The religious hubs can be very hateful and some go there just to provoke an argument with a believer. The way this country is right now, believer need to seek the Lord with a repentant heart and show people the love of Christ. Ya know, walk the walk etc...

@ jenblacksheep- I think you finding this hub now is no accident. I just read a these hubs. I think you're in a seeker mode. I hope it leads you to God.

I hope you take the time and maybe , find who we know as God.

      @Bibowen- Thanks and Praise God

Very convicting. The truth needs to be told. What opposition we face here are just words. Thanks for standing for the truth.

So my friend typed my name in the search engine here and this article came up. She thought I would get angry but it made me smile to re-read those comments I made. I'm actually quite flattered.

I'm not here to shout, yell, rant or argue with you, I come here in peace. You asked a lot of questions in this hub about atheists and I thought I'd try and answer them since I seem to be your case study. If you are genuinely interested in why I became an atheist, I published a hub explaining my choices. If you don't want to know the answers to the questions you asked then you don't have to read the rest of my post. (Sorry it's so long).

You said that "You'll never see an Atheist alone" - I was raised Jewish, all of my family are practising jews and I am very much alone in my beliefs, the black sheep of the family you might say. I didn't just suddenly wake up one day an atheist, it took many years of realisation and is something I have thought long and hard about. My conclusions were that you would say that you just know God is there, you can feel his presence and feel him guiding you, yes? I just don't feel him, I don't feel another presence. For want of a better phrase, I feel alone.

You may not believe this but I often argue with my atheist friends about religion, and if I think they are being unreasonable I do stick up for believers.

Another thing that you may not believe is that usually I enter religious forums not to get justification for my beliefs (my own reasons are my justification) and gang up on religious people, but to learn. Usually I am disappointed because it turns into nothing but a slanging match. I studied philosophy and religion at college and university and I am interested in what others have to say and why they believe what they believe. I like to argue with people about their beliefs and have debates about religion but I am learning that the forums are not the place for that. Both theists and atheists get too hot headed and turn everything into some personal battle, and yes, I know I do that too, I can't resist it.

Thank you for this hub my friend and sister :) It was thought provoking and very moving. I too have written though not as eloquently as you here about the true salvation message and why we should never "candy coat" the truth to the world.

If they don't know or realize they NEED the life jacket (Jesus), they will either refuse it or take it off.

Hello spiderpam. We will know them by their fruits.

God loves variety, that is why everyone is different I share salvation and the love of Jesus different then you do. I think it would be great fun if I could witness with you. Check my hubs we both share truth, we have much work

to do for our Lord and Saviour. Get it out there however you are led by the Holy Spirit. It is not a contest but for the Love of Jesus and not because we are good it is because he is. But for the Grace of God I was saved In 1992. I do not want anyone to perish. The holy spirit works in me and through me because I am so not righteous. Christ is I am covered by his blood. No weapon formed against me shall prosper. Keep up sharing the Good News I would love

to run into you and the interview person. Great Hub spiderpam. I will return.

You know, Pam, I've often felt like we truly are getting fewer and fewer in preaching the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help us God. So many churches want to stay on the watered-down gospel to "save more sinners" and that's why 90% fall away.

2 Timothy 4:4 states "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,"

I think about David and Goliath. He had armies of Israelites there to fight, but instead no one came forward to fight the giant, but little David. Jesus is of David's lineage and is called the "Lion of Judah", thus my name, "Judah's Daughter". We have His heart, the heart of David, that we stand in the faith knowing the Lord will win each and every battle aginst evil, even to the point of casting those who choose to shut their eyes, ears and hearts to the truth into.....yes.......HELL. AMEN.

spiderpam, I'm with you 100%. I too try to witness in the same manner. God is Holy and cannot look upon sin. Therefore the need of a Savior. You can't hardly point out to someone why Jesus had to die on the cross unless you point out that they are sinners in need of His forgiveness. Great hub. Glad you wrote it.

SpiderSpam is right on the mark with this post. Any "christians" here that find this Hub offensive or "unloving", you had better get back to reading your Bible, and examine yourself whether you are in the faith. The Apostle Paul would not even recognize the warm and fuzzy, seeker friendly, unoffensive messages being preached in many modern day "churches" I highly recommend you read "Way Of The Master" by ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron, and listen to the CD that they offer, "Hell's Best Kept Secret"

@ one2recognize2- That's was the point and Thank you so much for your words.

@ James- Thank you, your hubs are amazing also I know God is with you.

@ Vlad- I thank you re-reading my hub, I prefer the "holy mirror" approach, because only when a person sees that they have offended God they will understand why they are in need of Jesus. They don't feel they are wrong they will not feel a need to be saved. We have different ways of reaching the lost. I'm just blessed that we're on the same side. Thank you brother in Christ. I've learned much from you as well.

I guess, in reality, perhaps, someone has to tell the people about the hell. I do not preach that way. But it is personal. I went to Bible, searching and in the Gospels I found only 4 words "hell". My believe is and my point is that if one is in jail we do not have to tell him: you are in jail. Everyone wants to get out from that hell, am I right? But keep hubbing. You are my precious sis. There are many things I learned from you.

There are two parts of the good news. The first part is even though we have sinned Jesus came and paid our debt. In other words we are guilty of breaking God's Law, but if we repent and trust in Jesus, He can drop the charges and dismiss our case, beacause he already paid the fine in his blood. In order to get that mesage through to a unbeliever you have to show them that they have offended God and are deserving of God's wrath, comparing them to God's Law ie The Ten Commandment reveal that persons heart and show their true self kinda like a "holy mirror" Only when we see ourselves through God's eyes can we truly understand, why Jesus died on the cross. God's Love is apparent if he didn't love us He wouldn't have sent Jesus to die for our sins. It not religion that says these things it's in His Word. It our tool to reveal God to the lost. I can't convert anyone, but what I can do is make them think to think about death and what happens after that, and show them we are not good people, but sinners in need a Savior. No need to apologize.

Pam, if I am not Christian you never get me to Christianity by negative evangelism and preaching the sin. See our message is to preach good news to the people who are not saved. Rest is upon Holy Spirit. We do not convert the people. Backsliding is also not problem of evangelism but wrong teaching of churches. The churches were programmed by religion and make God undesirable.

My apology, if I did not understand your article.
