Blessed Ship

Oh, We'll be on that ship of freedom , when it comes, when it comes,

We'll sail on that ship of freedom, when it comes.

We'll walk that blessed road, until our savior comes to lift our load,

And we'll sail on that ship of freedom, when it comes.

In 1963, with our Martin, you and me, We walked to washington, on that very day,

By our freedom walk, amid shouts and the talk, all listened to what we had to say.

The ship of freedom did sail, to lift that awful spell, and a new dream was realized,

Of respect and harmony, for all the world to see, one people, then to be equalized.

We'll be on that ship of freedom when it comes, when it comes,

We'll sail on that ship of freedom when it comes.

We'll walk that blessed road, until our savior comes to lift our load,

Oh, we'll sail on that ship of freedom when it comes.

Kennedy, gentle friend, had a message, that he did send, a respect of your fellow man,

Before Abe Lincoln's chair, we held a meeting there, for all freedom, to cover this land.

No matter, race or creed, our rights, we all need, and our constitution spells this all out,

Our human spirit is so great, no more prejudice and hate, it is what our love is all about.

Oh, we'll be on that freedom ship, when it comes, when it comes,

Oh, we'll sail on that freedom ship, when it comes,

We'll walk that blessed road, till our savior comes to lift our load,

And we'll sail on that freedom ship, when it comes.

I see my ship a coming over the hill, You'll never guess who's standing there, so real,

It's Medgar, John, and Bobby, all to greet us there, and Martin is holding that wheel.

We'll all be there to help them, yes we can, get on that ship of freedom, that's so grand,

We shall Sail our ship to glory, and you know the story, now go tell it all over the land.

Oh, we'll be on that ship of freedom, when it comes, when it comes,

We'll sail on that ship of freedom, when it comes.

We'll walk that blessed road, until our savior comes to lift our load,

And we'll sail on that ship of freedom , when it comes.

Equal rights and the Civil Rights Movement and freedom from oppression, as well as being born in the South and seeing first hand many of the atrocities faced by people of color, has prompted me to write this work. I taught school in a black community in 1970 and as a white man, was treated with the utmost dignity in an all black populated school system. My interaction and a genuine relationship with my children, encouraged me to further my education and help the people who were in need, the most. It has inspired me to write and tell of what I have experienced over the years.
