In Ephesians, He's our Glorious Treasure

Updated on January 7, 2016

A bit of background...

The book of Ephesians was written by Paul for several churches in the surrounding area of Ephesus. Paul wished to give to the Christians in these churches themes that pertained to their positions in Christ as members of the body of Christ.

Some people might theologically argue that most of Paul's teachings are irrelevant for the church of today because the culture of today is vastly different than the culture of the early church. However, I would argue that the preachings and teachings of Paul are even more so relevant for us today; all that the church faces today, the church of yesterday faced as well.

There are three main themes throughout the book of Ephesians.

The hope of God's calling.

  • Ephesians 1:18--"I pray also that the eyes of your hear may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, ..."

The glorious riches of God's inheritance in the saints.

  • Ephesians 1:18--"..., the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints."

God's great power toward those who believe.

  • Ephesians 1:19--"And His incomparably great power for us who believe. ..."

Throughout these themes, we are given great blessings; but, we are also given great responsibilities:

  1. We are called to walk in unity.
  2. We are called to walk in purity.
  3. We are called to walk in harmony.
  4. We are called to walk in victory.

Ephesians 4:3

"Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."
"Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace."

We are called to walk in unity.

Ephesians 4:1-16 lists out the responsibility of every believer to maintain and adhere to a unity within the Church of God (not the denomination). The Church is the bride of Christ, and as such, the bride must come to the Bridegroom bearing in mind a unity between herself and the Bridegroom. The Church must keep in mind a commonality between each person with the Church; any division of any kind will suffer a loss for the Church and will blemish the bride that Christ is expecting.

If I sound like I'm being preachy, well...perhaps I am being preachy. I have seen first hand how un-unified body, split and torn at the seams because of dissension among the congregation, can wreak havoc within the hearts of said congregation. Division causes mistrust, doubt and fear...all very potent weapons of the enemy. Every believer, every person who stands as a soldier in the army of the Lord, MUST stand unified with every other soldier. This is how we advance the Kingdom of God. This is how we reach a lost and dying world. This is how we maintain unity. This is how we meet the Bridegroom at the Wedding Feast of the Lamb.

How, then, does the Church manifest this unity of body in Christ Jesus, our Lord and Savior? Ephesians 4:4-6.

  • We are one body.
  • We are one spirit.
  • We have one hope of calling.
  • We serve one Lord.
  • We are baptized in one faith.
  • We have one God, who is Father to us all.

Ephesians 5:25-27

"..., just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to Himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, ..."
"..., just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to Himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, ..."

We are called to walk in purity.

We are to put off the old man, and then put on the new man ... Ephesians 4:17-5:21. As the Church of God (not the denomination) works in greater tandem to be united, there will be grown a heart and mindset of all that is Christ, including a forgiveness one for another.

"Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your Name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, AS WE ALSO HAVE FORGIVEN OUR DEBTORS. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one."

As we learn to forgive and forgive freely without condition, we will see more clearly a level of unity that is required, which in turn will enhance the purity of believers as one body, one church...the Church of God. This is how we advance the Kingdom of God. This is how we reach a lost and dying world. This is how we maintain unity. This is how we meet the Bridegroom at the Wedding Feast of the Lamb, with a walk of purity.

Revelation 19:6-8--"Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: 'Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.' (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.)"

We are called to walk in harmony.

There is such great and glorious harmony within the body of the Church of God (not the denomination) when we walk in the calling of harmony as the Lord commands ... Ephesians 5;22-6:9.

We love as Christ loved. In all ways.

  • As Christ so loved the church that He laid down His very life for her, so, too, should a husband and a wife follow the example Christ gave. As the church submits to the authority of the Lord, a wife submits to the authority of her husband. So many people, men and women alike, find this thought to be archaic and outdated. One things to remember, though, is that the submission of a wife to her husband's authority means not being subservient to her husband. Wives, to submit to your husbands means to allow your husband to lead as God directs him to do so. There is an order to the ordination of creation, and as we, human kind, have subverted this ordained order, men have been all but taken out of the equation of God's order. I'll be honest; I struggle often with giving the leadership of my family to Mark. But, I am not called to question Mark's leadership; instead, Mark leads and I help by offering help and not giving hindrance. Mark and I work as one because we are no longer two but one. Genesis 2:24--"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be untied to his wife, and they will become one flesh."
  • As the wife submits to the authority of the husband, so, too, should children submit to the authority of their parents. As there increases a harmony between husband and wife, a harmony will also increase between parents and children. This more than promotes harmony in a home; but, is a command of God. Exodus 20:12 says, "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." This is the fifth of the Ten Commandments. This is not a choice a child is allowed to make or a feeling we have when it is convenient to have such a feeling, it is a direct command. When a child honors their father and their mother, he or she is also honoring God. I tell my children all the time, "Good or bad, right or wrong, your father is your father and I am your mother." It matters not if any child feels their parents are undeserving of any respect or honor, you are to honor them, as God commanded, because, as I said a moment ago, to honor your parents means to honor God. There just is no loophole to be found to justify the disobedience of this command given by God. Our parents are Image-Bearers as we are Image-Bearers; we are all created in the image of God. And as we honor our parents and honor God, God gives us a promise after giving us a command...a promise of blessings in our own lives.
  • And lest we make it of little importance, there must be a harmony between a father and his child(ren). Ephesians 6:4 says, "Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord." This is for fathers because fathers are the head of the family, as Christ is the head of the church. Commands made to children of their fathers should be such that the children will be nourished in their own relationships with Christ, much like food will nourish each body on an individual basis. It is the duty of the child to honor his father, and mother, much like it is the duty of the wife to respect her husband's authority. When there is harmony on all levels of the family, there is peace and a greater want to walk in obedience. This is honoring and honorable to every member of the family, and parallels how the church, the bride, honors Christ, the Bridegroom.

It should be noted at this point, that, as the author of this article, these are my thoughts and take aways from my own personal study of Ephesians. I am in no way a perfect wife or a perfect mother; I have made many a mistake in my 44 (nearly 45) years of life on this planet...25 of them as wife and mother. I daily struggle to let my husband lead as mandated by God, and I daily struggle with how to discipline my children in a Godly manner. My struggles lead to learning how to fully trust in God, making it easier to trust in my husband and the head of my family. When there is greater harmony between me and Mark, there is greater harmony between me and my children and between Mark and the children. None of this harmony comes from our own selves, but from loving God and letting Him love us.

Each of you, likewise, must make the choice to walk a path that is of God's will. For yourselves, for your spouses, for your children.

This is how we advance the Kingdom of God. This is how we reach a lost and dying world. This is how we maintain unity. This is how we meet the Bridegroom at the Wedding Feast of the Lamb.

We are called to walk in victory,

Ephesians 6:10-17

10. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.

11. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.

12. For our struggles is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

13. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

14. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

15. and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes the Gospel of peace.

16. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows the evil one.

This is how we advance the Kingdom of God. This is how we reach a lost and dying world. This is how we maintain unity. This is how we meet the Bridegroom at the Wedding Feast of the Lamb.

17. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18. And pray int he spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints."

"If We Are the Body"

Stay tuned...

The book of Philippians is the next book we will encounter on our journey through the Bible. As Ephesians taught the church to walk in greater unity, purity, harmony, and victory, Philippians will teach the Christian how to walk the servant's path. A path of humility in Christ. Christ walked this planet as a humble servant willing to obey as His Father commanded. He is our example of humble servitude.
