INTENTION OF HAJJ

TALBIYAH

Procedure of UMRAH & HAJJ

Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

The Islamic scholars have stated the conditions of Hajj being obligatory, which, if they are met, make it obligatory for a person to perform Hajj, and without them Hajj is not obligatory

1 – Being Muslim

2 – Being Sanity

3 – Being an Adult

4 – Being Independent or Free (not a slave)

5 – Being able to do it both physically & financially

IHRAM (Clothing worn by Muslims during the Hajj/ Umrah)

For Men ihram consists of two pieces of white un-sewn cloth

For Women it is not necessary to wear special clothing while in a state of ihram. Women are expected to wear clothing that conceals the shape and covers the body completely, leaving only their faces and hands exposed

LOCATION OF MIQATS

MIQAT is an Arabic word which means a stated place. Pilgrim must put on ihram at/before one of these Miqat Locations

1. Dhul-Hulaifah usually known as Masjid-u-Shajarah

2. Masjid Miqat Al-Juhfah

3. Dhat-Irq

4. Miqat Qarn Al-Manazil Mosque

5. Yalamlam

6. Al Taneem (Masjid-e-Ayesha) acts as Miqat for people living in Makkah

PROCEDURE OF UMRAH

  1. Proclaim the NIYAH (intention) for UMRAH
  2. Perform GHUSL (Full Body Washing/ Cleaning)
  3. Wear IHRAM at/before Miqat
  4. Pray Two Rak’at Nafl Salaah
  5. Recite TALBIYAH frequently i.e. “Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk La Sharika Laka Labbayk, Innal Hamda Wanni’mata Laka Walmulk, La Sharika Lak” “O my Lord Here I am at your service, Here I am. There is no partner with you, here I am. Truly, the praise and the provisions are yours, and so is the dominion and sovereignty. There is no partner with you.”
  6. Travel to AL-MASJID AL-HARAM
  7. Make TAWAF. TAWAF starts from Hajar-ul-Aswad (Black Stone) and circle around Kab'bah counter-clockwise seven times
  8. Pray Two Rak’at Salaah near MAQAM-I-IBRAHIM
  9. Drink ZAMZAM WATER (In state of fasting there is no sin on you if you do not drink from Zamzam)
  10. Perform SA'IY i.e. Seven Runs Between SAFA (Start), & MARWAH (Finish)
  11. Hair Cut Shave / Clip
  12. Remove IHRAM and put on usual clothes
  13. UMRAH is completed

PROCEDURE OF HAJJ

The Months of Hajj are Shawwal (10th month of Hijri calendar), Dhul-Qa`dah (11th month of Hijri calendar) & Dhul-Hijjah (12th month of Hijri calendar)

TYPES OF HAJJ

There are three types of Hajj:

  1. HAJJ-E-TAMATTU- HAJJ E TAMATTU is recommended for outsider who arrive much before HAJJ
  2. HAJJ-E-QIRAAN - HAJJ E QIRAAN is recommended for outsider arriving shortly before HAJJ
  3. HAJJ-E-IFRAAD - HAJJ IFRAAD is only for the locals of MAKKAH and its surrounding

HAJJ-E-TAMATTU

In HAJJ-E-TAMATTU Umrah and Hajj in two parts, Umrah before Hajj but performed with separate Ihram. Tamattu means entering ihraam for ‘Umrah only during the months of Hajj. Abandon Ihram after Umrah & then resume Ihram on the day of al-Tarwiyah, which is the 8th of Dhu’l-Hijjah and does all the actions of Hajj. So Tamattu involves a complete ‘Umrah and a complete Hajj. FIRST DAY OF HAJJ-E-TAMATTU (8 Dhu’l-Hijjah the Day of AL-TARWIYAH)

  1. Proclaim the NIYAH (intention) for HAJJ
  2. Wear IHRAM
  3. Pray Two Rak’at Nafl Salaah
  4. Recite TALBIYAH frequently i.e. “As mentioned above.”
  5. Go To MINA before Zuhr
  6. Offer ZUHR, ASR, MAGHRIB, ISHA in MINA, shortened but at its own time
  7. Stay overnight In MINA
  8. First Day Of HAJJ Is Completed

SECOND DAY OF HAJJ-E-TAMATTU (9 Dhu’l-Hijjah the Day of ARAFAH)

  1. Second day of HAJJ you are in MINA
  2. Pray FAJAR SALAAH in MINA & then travel to ARFAT
  3. In ARFAT Pray ZUHAR SALAAH & ASAR SALAAH both Shortened and Combined (at same time)
  4. Stay in ARFAT till Sunset Don’t pray MAGHRIB SALAAH
  5. Travel to MUZDALFIA (Al-Mash'ar al-Haram) after Sunset
  6. If a pilgrim reaches MUZDALFIA before the time of ISHA, he will have to wait till it is time for ISHA when the time for ISHA comes, he will offer both MAGHRIB SALAAH and ISHA SALAAH with one Adhan and one Takbir.
  7. In MUZDALFIA Pray MAGHRIB SALAAH & ISHA SALAAH both Shortened and Combined (three raka’at for Maghrib and two raka’at for Isha and Salatul Witr)
  8. Stay Overnight In MUZDALFIA (Al-Mash'ar al-Haram)
  9. Pick Up 49 Pebbles (Very Small Stones)
  10. Second Day Of HAJJ Is Completed

THIRD DAY OF HAJJ-E-TAMATTU (10 Dhu’l-Hijjah the Day of SACRIFICE)

  1. Third Day of HAJJ you Are In MUZDALIFA
  2. After Praying FAJR SALAAH Travel to MINA
  3. Pray ZUHR SALAH (shortened but at its own time) in MINA
  4. Go to JAMARATUL ‘AQABAH & Stone the Pillar
  5. Perform SLAUGHTER (Sacrifice Animal)
  6. Hair Cut Shave/Clip
  7. Remove IHRAM and put on usual clothes
  8. Go to Al-Masjid Al-Haram
  9. Pray ASAR SALAH, MAGHRIB SALAAH & ISHA SALAAH at its own time
  10. Make TAWAF AL-IFADHA. TAWAF starts from Hajar-ul-Aswad (Black Stone) and circle around Kab'bah counter-clockwise seven times
  11. Pray Two Rak’at Salaah near MAQAM-I-IBRAHIM
  12. Drink ZAMZAM WATER
  13. Perform SA'IY i.e. Seven Runs between SAFA (Start), & MARWAH (Finish)

FOURTH DAY OF HAJJ-E-TAMATTU (11 Dhu’l-Hijjah the Day of TASHREEQ)

  1. Fourth Day of HAJJ You Are In MINA
  2. Pilgrim will have to perform Shortened SALAH for ZUHR, ASR and ISHA, He need not make QASR in the FARD SALAH of FAJR, MAGHRIB and SALATUL WITR, these will be performed as usual at its own time
  3. After ZUHR SALAAH go to All Three JAMARATS
  4. FIRST JAMRAH (JAMARATUL OOLA) Throw Seven Pebbles
  5. SECOND JAMRAH (JAMARATUL WUSTA) Throw Seven Pebbles
  6. THIRD JAMRAH (JAMARATUL AQABA) Throw Seven Pebbles
  7. Must Stay In MINA
  8. Fourth Day of HAJJ Is Completed

FIFTH DAY OF HAJJ-E-TAMATTU (12 Dhu’l-Hijjah the Day of TASHREEQ)

  1. Fifth Day of HAJJ You Are In MINA
  2. Pilgrim will have to perform Shortened SALAH for ZUHR, ASR and ISHA, He need not make QASR in the FARD SALAH of FAJR, MAGHRIB and SALATUL WITR, these will be performed as usual at its own time
  3. After ZUHR SALAAH go to All Three JAMARATS
  4. FIRST JAMRAH (JAMARATUL OOLA) Throw Seven Pebbles
  5. SECOND JAMRAH (JAMARATUL WUSTA) Throw Seven Pebbles
  6. THIRD JAMRAH (JAMARATUL AQABA) Throw Seven Pebbles
  7. Before sunset must go to AL-MASJID AL-HARAM or must stay in MINA
  8. Before Leaving AL-MASJID AL-HARAM Must Perform TAWAF-UL WIDA
  9. HAJJ IS COMPLETED

HAJJ-E-QIRAAN

In HAJJ-E-QIRAAN Umrah and Hajj in one Ihram. Qiraan means entering ihraam for ‘Umrah and Hajj both together. Entering ihraam for ‘Umrah first then including Hajj in that before starting the tawaaf of Hajj. That is done by intending that his tawaaf and saa’i will be for both Hajj and ‘Umrah. Should Slaughter (Sacrifice Animal) in HAJJ-E-QIRAAN

FIRST DAY OF HAJJ-E-QIRAAN (8 Dhu’l-Hijjah the Day of AL-TARWIYAH)

  2. Pray FAJAR SALAAH in MINA & then travel to ARFAT
  3. In ARFAT Pray ZUHAR SALAAH & ASAR SALAAH both Shortened and Combined (at same time)
  4. Stay in ARFAT till Sunset Don’t pray MAGHRIB SALAAH
  5. Travel to MUZDALFIA (Al-Mash'ar al-Haram) after Sunset
  6. If a pilgrim reaches MUZDALFIA before the time of ISHA, he will have to wait till it is time for ISHA when the time for ISHA comes, he will offer both MAGHRIB SALAAH and ISHA SALAAH with one ADHAN and one TAKBIR.
  7. In MUZDALFIA Pray MAGHRIB SALAAH & ISHA SALAAH both Shortened and Combined (three raka’at for Maghrib and two raka’at for Isha and Salatul Witr)
  8. Stay Overnight In MUZDALFIA (Al-Mash'ar al-Haram)
  9. Pick Up 49 Pebbles (Very Small Stones)
  10. Second Day Of HAJJ Is Completed

THIRD DAY OF HAJJ-E-QIRAAN (10 Dhu’l-Hijjah the Day of SACRIFICE)

  1. Third Day of HAJJ you are In MUZDALIFA

In HAJJ-E-IFRAAD Ihram adopted with intention of hajj only. Ifraad means entering ihraam for Hajj only i.e. Hajj without Umrah. No Slaughter (Sacrifice Animal) in HAJJ-E-IFRAAD

FIRST DAY OF HAJJ-E-IFRAAD (8 Dhu’l-Hijjah the Day of AL-TARWIYAH)

NOTE

One should note that HANAFI FIQH does not allow a person to combine ZUHR and ASR or MAGHRIB and ISHA PRAYERS while on JOURNEY. Every SALAH is to be performed separately at its appointed time except ARAFAT and MUZDALIFAH as it has been explained above.

PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PEACE AND BLESSINGS BE UPON HIM) HADITHS RELATED TO HAJJ

  • Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The performance of `Umrah is expiation for the sins committed between it and the previous ones. And the reward for Hajj (pilgrimage accepted by Allah) is nothing but Paradise." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol. 3, Book 27, hadith no. 1)
  • Abu Musa Al Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Hajji will intercede for four hundred of his family members on the Day of Judgment, and verily he returns from Hajj (sinless) as on the day his mother gave birth to him‘ (Musnad Al Bazzar, Hadith: 3196 and Musannaf ‘Abdur Razzaq, Hadith: 8807)
