Is Chernobyl Haunted?

Updated on July 12, 2013

Chernobyl reactor number 4 a few days after the explosion | Source

This year marked the tragic 25th anniversary of the accident at Chernobyl in the Soviet Union. For those who are too young to remember or are not familiar with what happened, on April 26th 1986 nuclear reactor number four exploded forever changing the way the world thought about nuclear power. The town of Pripyat which had the unfortunate luck to be the closest town to Chernobyl stands today as it has since the accident, abandoned.

You can walk into any home in Pripyat and perhaps find dishes on the table waiting to be filled, or books spread out where perhaps a child had been studying. Residence of Pripyat claimed there were some odd occurrences in the days prior to the explosion such as having odd and terrifying nightmares. Some have claimed to have received strange phone calls while others have claimed that there were apparitions to be seen wandering around the town.

Fortunately there were few lives lost that day when reactor number four exploded, but the firefighters that rushed to the scene would all succumb months later. These brave men that rushed into save anyone they could ended up dying slow painful deaths from radiation poisoning. Ironically the beds that the firefighters used while in the hospital would go on to kill others. For some unknown reason the beds that the firefighters used while in the hospital were used for other patients thus contaminating those patients with radiation poisoning. It is unknown exactly how many people died in total from Chernobyl as most fled the area before any quarantine measures could be put into place.

Very few investigations have been conducted at Chernobyl due to the prohibitively high levels of radiation that are still present. For those who have been allowed inside the barricades that are erected around the area claim to have seen shadows lurking in the night and also claim to hear whispering but can never find its source. Some of the shadows that have been seen have the appearance of firemen in full gear making those that have seen them assume these are the same firemen that had lay dying in the hospital months after the explosion.

It may be decades more before proper investigations can be done to deduce whether or not Chernobyl is truly haunted, but from the stories that come from those that have been to the area it may be well worth it. What do you think?

Does this sound crazy - I really really want to go there. I want to help with the wildlife investigation programs, take a zillion photos, maybe help out in orphanages/hospitals, meet the positive defiant women that still live there, and say prayers/send positive vibes to all those affected by the disaster (the whole world) but especially to those that died immediately.

The only true pest on this planet is us humans. We're the ones that need exterminating! (lol?!)

The accident itself is reported to have happened sometime after 1:23 am but Pripyat was not evacuated till the following day, around 2 pm the 27th. Here is a snippet of the information I found.

For the attention of the residents of Pripyat! The City Council informs you that due to the accident at Chernobyl Power Station in the city of Pripyat the radioactive conditions in the vicinity are deteriorating. The Communist Party, its officials and the armed forces are taking necessary steps to combat this. Nevertheless, with the view to keep people as safe and healthy as possible, the children being top priority, we need to temporarily evacuate the citizens in the nearest towns of Kiev Oblast. For these reasons, starting from April 27, 1986 2 pm each apartment block will be able to have a bus at its disposal, supervised by the police and the city officials. It is highly advisable to take your documents, some vital personal belongings and a certain amount of food, just in case, with you. The senior executives of public and industrial facilities of the city has decided on the list of employees needed to stay in Pripyat to maintain these facilities in a good working order. All the houses will be guarded by the police during the evacuation period. Comrades, leaving your residences temporarily please make sure you have turned off the lights, electrical equipment and water and shut the windows. Please keep calm and orderly in the process of this short-term evacuation.

—Evacuation announcement in Pripyat, 27 April 1986 (14:00)

As we all know, it was not temporary as noone has ever been allowed back.

      Thanks for the question tellybox!

"You can walk into any home in Pripyat and perhaps find dishes on the table waiting to be filled, or books spread out where perhaps a child had been studying. " Didn't the disaster happen after 1am?

I wonder if that is the same "mothman" that was reportedly seen around the Twin Towers right before 9/11 happened? Didn't someone supposedly photograph this large black shape flying away from the towers? Thanks Shahvir!

To the people asking about the "mothman" sighting apparently the workers reported some sort of a black winged crow with red eyes and an approximate 20 feet wing span. The workers reported seeing it and having nightmares and receiving threatening phone calls before the incident and then on the day of the incident it was seen flying away from the burning reactor. It was speculated that it was a black stroke but the evidence suggests otherwise.

It would have been far easier to deny your comment then to answer it Tania, but I wanted to answer it. I in no way am making fun of, or having fun because of this tragedy, and yes it is a tragedy as we have our own here in the U.S. As for "get scared, feel creepy" I do not know anyone who wouldn't feel any of those things when discussing the numerous stories that abound about places where great tragedy has taken place, have you been to New York where the towers fell? That is totally scary and creepy to.

I am sorry you were so offended by my Hub, but I won't be taking it down nor will I refrain from posting any other hubs I may find interesting because it might upset someone.

Living in Ukraine i can say with confidence that people are still suffer from the effects of radiation. It's all fun for you... get scared, feel creepy. But this is tragedy of a nation!

Too many children are born with disabilities...blood cancer, and many other diseases that did not exist to the newborns before 1986.

What I think is that chernobyl IS haunted. come on seriously it has to be, with all those sightings. lots of people died from the radiation. another web sight said that 93,000 people died from the radiation. and now that I learned that it is haunted. today ( June,2) I saw chernobyl diaries. after the movie I wondered what happened at chernobyl. I learned lots of facts about chernobyl and thank you for putting up this site.

I do believe that I have heard about Aschwitz and Dachau being haunted, I will have to check into that and it could possibly be another hub yet to be written.

I would think that with the amount of radiation they would have been a bit more prepared but they may have thought that a good cleaning would be all they needed. Thanks for the comment and the idea!

If places like gettysburg and chernobyl are haunted how come we never hear about Aschwitz or Dachau being haunted too?

It seems bizarre that the beds would not have been desposed of after the firefighters died. It might have been just ignorance or the lack of money. The hospital may not have a lot of money.
