Is Google More Popular Than Religion

Updated on February 7, 2011

Who needs religion or a god when you can follow a presence as significant as google. I had a conversation with a very humble and religious man the other day. When i asked him if google was bigger than religion, his reply was "yes, and i am guilty of following the false god of google". It is no wonder when you think that everyday in our lives we or someone close to us will use the Internet at least once per day. It is just about only natural that when you are surfing the net you will use google or a google related product at least once. Who can blame you, in this day and age of all things on fast forward, google is the ultimate tool for anyone who wants an answer now and cant wait. Google will provide. Have you ever noticed that radio stations are having less and less trivia type competitions. The fact is that now anyone with a fast Internet connection thanks to google can answer any trivia question that any radio station can throw at them. Now don't get me wrong, because when it comes to using google i am one of the greatest culprits. I just think we have to stand back and take a look at where we are going as a society. Soon the younger generation will find there is no reason to study and learn because anything they need to know will be at the press of a button. I am part of a generation that is stuck in the middle of old and new. I can still remember a time of when your boss would ring up at night on your home phone because mobile phones were not around yet. Now i often think how did we live life without mobile phones and the Internet. But guess what we did, and before Larry Page, founder of google first coined the phrase 'google it' we were looking up books or asking our more learned peers for the information we sought. Although i am not a religious person, i guess i am just concerned for our future generations that thousands of valuable tradition and culture will be changed and warped by the Internet. I often think of how life would have been like in the days of pre electricity. How peaceful that would have been, then i am suddenly sucked back into a world internet banking, sms, google, iphones and dwindling numbers at churches.

Great post....well written seems to me the internet has many paralells with the religion that I grew up with ie heaven and hell. Perhaps posts (souls) will live for eternity in one of these places....Cheers
