Is our Country Trading in God's Commandments for Anything Under The Sun?

Updated on June 12, 2012

What went wrong?

Our great country was based on "God we trust." What exactly and where exactly do Americans place their trust now? Freedom is important and it is crucial for our country's future but when we have bullies running the halls and reality celeb shows dominating magazine covers, it makes you wonder what on earth is going on with society in general? Is television and music to blame? Are our parents to blame? Is anybody to blame for the breakdown that has been taking place at a startling rate. What happened to the All-American family? Have we lost our sense of being God fearing Americans and traded it in for "So what, I'll do what I want and I don't care who gets hurt along the way. Besides, what I do behind closed doors is nobody's business." When your business affects other people, it becomes their business.

Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself.'" - Matthew 19:19

Who Gets Hurt With an "Anything Goes" Society?

The answer is many people get hurt and many people keep it all bottled up inside. When we allow boundaries to fall and we allow no lines to protect us as God meant it to be, people end up with consequences that they have to face for the rest of ther lives. So what does God have to do with that? Plenty! God placed the commandments in our lives to protect us, not hurt us. We don't want to hear about those that get hurt, do we? We want to hear about the people having fun? The successful people who seem to triumph at every turn. We want what we want and we want it now without thinking about the consequences of sin. We say it doesn't matter what people do behind closed doors because it's not hurting anyone. The truth is what we do does matter and it does affect those around us. Try saying it doesn't matter to the girl who just got AIDS with her first lover. Ask her family how she is coping with the news and how it affects them. Try saying it doesn't matter to the mother who just learned her daughter is on her third or fourth baby and she is not even twenty-one yet. The mother feels she has no choice but to foot the bill and cares very much what her daughter does behind closed doors. Try saying it doesn't matter to the woman who had three potential boyfriends walk out on her because she wasn't that great in the sack how it affects her life and those around her. Meanwhile, her self-worth plummets with the shame of giving her body in hopes of having her love returned. Today's three date rule that many live by has caused STD rates to skyrocket. Sin is sin and we don't want to hear it. We think that sin is normal and as long as we are responsible, nobody will get hurt but the truth is thousands if not millions get hurt by living a life of sin that is glamourized by the media. Its a choice and stories like this happen all over America. We now live with lies, manipulation and sugar coated stories to look good because nobody wants to hear the ugly truth. Who gets hurt behind closed doors? Many people do, but we'd like to think our actions don't affect others but they do.

Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise. - 1 Corinthians 3:18

For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, - 2 Timothy 3:2

Do We Count In the Big Picture?

Everything we say and do affects those around us. How we live every aspect of our lives affects our family, our friends and our community. The beauty of God's commandments is that it gives the community a sense of accountability and a moral code to abide by, a sense of bonding as one in the name of Jesus. The commandments are placed to protect us in the body of Christ. God is alive and well and he wants nothing more than to love you, reach out to you and give you a better life through his son, Jesus. Our nation was formed under God but it is slowly becoming a country formed under little old me or you. We weren't designed for lives which glorify ourselves. Satan would like nothing more than to break your spirit and crush your soul but God wants to give you life and protect your soul. God didn't design us so that we'd spend our time in selfish pursuits. He designed us so that we could have a loving relationship with him. We were made to worship and glorify God. The secular world glorifies man and keeps God out of the picture in movies, songs and radio. A God centered world keeps the focus on God, our creator and father, who designed every facet of our being. We were designed to love one another as he has first loved us.

One Person Can Make a Difference.

Each of us can make a difference in the lives of those around us 24/7. What we say, think and do even behind closed doors affects those around us. We can start making a difference by attending a local church and enriching our mind by listening to God's Word. Each of us can make a difference and every small thing we do adds up to great things over time and it will affect those around us for the better. Give a little. Love a little. Care a little. Do everything with God's love shining before you and he will make a way for you, a beautiful way in a dark world that has lost its moral compass.

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." - Luke 6:38
