Is there a God-the-Mother?

Barry is the founder and director of Expositors International Ministry and dean of Bible Expositors Seminary, Philippines.

The World Mission Society Church of God

The World Mission Society Church of God (WMSCOG) was founded in 1964 by a Korean man named Ahn Sahng-Hong. He was born in 1918 to Buddhist parents. Most researchers agree that he was baptized in the 7th Day Adventist Church in 1948. His followers say that the church was founded the same year that he was baptized. I have found no records to support this claim. The purpose for the founding of the church was to restore the Church to Biblical practices. The followers of Ahnsahnghong view him as a reformer. He himself never claims to be Christ in any of his writings but his followers view him as Christ returned to earth in flesh. He died in 2008.

Basic beliefs:[1]

- Genesis reveals that the name of God was Elohim

- Both males and females were created by God in “his image.” God created two people because God has two images. There is God the Father and God the Mother.

- Ashnsahnghong is Jesus returned to earth to restore the Early Church.

- The Church was led astray when it mixed Christian beliefs with Roman beliefs.

- The true Church of God practices the 7 feasts and the New Covenant Passover.

- The soul pre-existed before we were born. “Before our body existed the spirit already had life.”

- We are born sinners because our spirits sinned in heaven before we were born

- To be saved one must know the true name of God

- God is one person with a different name for each age. In the Old Testament He was Jehovah; in the time of the Gospels he was Jesus; in the time of the Apostles he was the Holy Spirit, and at his second coming he was Ahnsahghong.[2]

- Christ brings the hidden manna that he gave to his disciples to believers today in the New Covenant Passover Feast.

- The New Covenant Passover Feast was given by Ahnsahnghong to forgive sins.

- - The fig tree in Scripture refers to Israel and is a sign that the Christ would return. 1948 signified the return of Christ and this was the same year that Ahnsahnghong was baptized.

- God the Mother is the mystery that was hidden before but is now revealed.

As I read through their very lengthy website it occurred to me that there are precious little of their teachings that are original. The idea that God gives revelation to correct a church that has been corrupted is a common trope among many modern religions. The Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), The Watch Tower Tract Society (Jehovah’s Witnesses) and even Islam claims to be movements that God initiated to correct a church that had departed from God’s original teachings. Sabbatarianism (the keeping of Saturday as the religious day of worship) is taught in the 7th Day Adventist church. Perhaps it is no coincidence that Ahnsahnghong was a member of this church before he formed his own.

The idea that Jesus has returned from heaven in a bodily form is very common among those religions that derive their origin from Christianity. From Kondraty Selivanov who was a member of the Orthodox Church in Russia in the 1700s who castrated himself and declare he was the Christ to the Filipino Apollo Quiboloy who is still alive as of this writing and claims to be the “Appointed Son of God” proclamations that Christ has returned is nothing new. This phenomenal claim is not even original in Korean. The Rev. Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church, also claimed to be the Messiah.

The WMSCOG website is littered with Bible verses. They seem to have a proof text, or at least a part of a verse to support all their beliefs. It is interesting to note that they are highly inconsistent in their use of Bible translations. They reference the KJV, NKJV, NIV, ISV and others. I cannot help but wonder why. It appears at least that they not only cherry-pick the verses they like but also the translation that reflects what they want to say. If they have an “official” Bible translation I am unaware of it.

Proof Texts of the WMSCOG

Galatians 4:26 (ISV) “But the heavenly Jerusalem is the free woman, and she is our spiritual mother.”

This seems to be their most used verse to prove their claim that there is a God- the-Mother. It is a very sloppy attempt at best. Just two verses prior, in verse 24 of Galatians chapter 4 Paul says:

“This is being said as an allegory, for these women represent two covenants. The one woman, Hagar, is from Mount Sinai, and her children are born into slavery.”

By reading verse 26 in its context we see that Paul is not talking about a God-the-Mother but rather he is using Jerusalem as an illustration to contrast the Old Covenant and the Law.

Paul is pointing out the error that is being taught that a person must embrace the Law or Judaism to be saved. Being saved in Christ we are no longer under the bondage of the Law. Christ paid for the sin debt of those He saves. That is why Paul says in verse 31:

“So then, brethren, we are not children of a bondwoman, but of the free woman.”

Christian are not under the Old Covenant but are in the New Covenant. We are not under the Law of Moses but are in Grace that was revealed in Jesus Christ. This verse is not about God- the- Mother.

How many gods are there?

WMSCOG says ““There is one God with three names in 3 ages.”

This is classic Sabellianism or Modalism. This is the belief that there is no Trinity (One God in Three Persons) but there is one God who acts in three different modes. However, that teaching is easily defeated by looking at a few Bible verses.

Matthew 3:16-17

After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”

Here we have Jesus being baptized, the Holy Spirit descending and the Father speaking from heaven. All three person are at the same place at the same time.

Acts 7:55-56

But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”

Steven is filled with the Holy Spirit, saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God. Again, all three persons are present at the same time. Historically Christians have believed that God is One God in the persons. All three persons are fully God.

We need to ask at this point, where was God the Mother? Why is she never directly mentioned? And we need to ask are there 3 Gods, four Gods (Father, Mother, Son and Holy Spirit) or One God?

The WMSCOG says ““The Creator of the heavens and the earth is not one God but Gods.”

The teaching of Tritheism is not new in the history of the Church. This is the belief that each person in the Trinity is a separate God. The WMSCOG seems to hold to a Di-theism. They believe that there is one male god who acts as father, son, and spirit and there is one female god who is the mother. This sounds some what unique until we consider that the Roman Catholic Church considers Mary to be the “mother of God” and even some have gone so far as to say she was sinless and even divine.

The Bible is clear that there is only on God. There is One God in Three Persons.

Deuteronomy 4:35

To you it was shown that you might know that the Lord, He is God; there is no other besides Him.

Deuteronomy 32:39

See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded and it is I who heal, and there
is no one who can deliver from My hand.

1 Kings 8:60

That all the people of the earth may know that the LORD is God, and that there is none else.

Notice please that there is only One God and this God is male (Him). There is no mention of “she” anywhere in the Bible in relation to God.

The orthodox position of the Christian church has historically been Trinitarian (one God in three persons).

[1] Unless otherwise stated all quotes and statements regarding the beliefs of the WMSCOG are from their website < http://english.watv.org/> Sept. 26, 2018

[2] It is not clear to me exactly when one age and one name ends and the other begins. It is also unclear if the Holy Spirit is in believers today.

Please present evidence of this "heavenly mother." The Bible is the Word of God and it is authoritative. The Bible knows nothing of this "mother."

Barry, the Bible is the Word of G-d. Heavenly Mother is a separate being. We're not supposed to pray to her right now.

Mr. Guckenberger: Thank you for your comment. You are most welcome to present proof for your claim of God- the-Mother. If you do not accept the Bible as the Word of God then we have no discussion regarding this matter. But if you do then (A) God creates el-nihilo (Gen. 1:1) and (B) man was not born but was created (Gen. 1:26-27). Thank you.

Heavenly Mother exists. How can anyone be born with only one parent? "Elohim" can be translated as "gods" or as "angels".
