It’s The Mission That Matters
“Wisdom breathes life into her children” ~ Sirach 4:11
Today’s 1st Reading (Sirach 4:11-19) provides us with the second opportunity in three days to reflect upon the spiritual gift of wisdom. The promises made to those who seek this virtue are immense:
“He who holds her fast inherits glory”
“He who obeys her judges nations”
“Those who love her the Lord loves”
These are but a few of the fruits borne out of the ardent pursuit of wisdom as outlined in today’s passage. Conversely however, should one forsake a life steeped in wisdom, we are told that “she will abandon him and deliver him into the hands of despoilers.” I think I’ll make sure to close our today’s reflection with a prayer for wisdom, for as we see here, the stakes are high.
In today’s Gospel (Mark 9:38-40), we encounter John approaching Jesus with a complaint of sorts, pointing out to Jesus that a person outside of their apostolic circle was driving out demons in Jesus’ name. Jesus quickly responds: “Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us.” It is clear that Jesus is reinforcing with his disciples the fact that the battle against Satan and the ongoing presence of evil takes all the resources possible.
But there would appear to be an even bigger lesson to be learned here. Jesus teaches us that it’s the mission that matters, in this case bringing the healing love of God into the world. It’s human nature to forget that from time to time and I have no doubt that God understands. Yet another reason to be armed with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit; it helps to remind us of this key precept, and at a time when it is precisely needed no less.
Reaching out in love to our neighbor is a prevailing theme throughout Jesus’ ministry. “For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward,” a passage we will reflect upon in greater detail tomorrow.
“God Almighty, your Wisdom includes an understanding of what is fair, what is logical, what is true, what is right and what is lasting.
I entreat you to grant me such Wisdom, that my labors may reflect your insight. Your Wisdom expands in your creations. Yours is an eternity ahead of man. May your wisdom flourish forever.” ~ Amen
