Jesus had a wife – Not

Updated on March 20, 2013

Spread the news!

Where is the major media coverage on the fourth century papyrus which gives Jesus a wife. We should all remember the headlines of two weeks ago. This news was suppose to rock the Christian community and have far reaching implications. I don't think a pastor covered it from a pulpit. There were no Christian groups discussing it other than those dismissing it as a fake. Because Christians were not concerned, there was no longer any news.

Fake fourth century papyrus

Fake

Alberto Camplani, a Coptic scholar, doubts authenticity

Coptic scholar Alberto Camplani criticized the “fourth-century papyrus” as lacking archaeological attribution upon purchase, according to the Associated Press. It appears that the document has not been authenticated.

Dr. Karen King, the Harvard religion professor who published the discovery, included a caveat in her conclusions: this “does not provide evidence that the historical Jesus was married.” Instead, it provided “direct evidence that claims about Jesus’ marital status first arose over a century after the death of Jesus in the context of intra-Christian controversies over sexuality, marriage, and discipleship.”

Harvard theologian has his doubts

Helmut Koester, a professor emeritus of Harvard Divinity School and a former 25-year editor of the journal, said in an interview that he heard "they did not want to publish because of doubts from two respected scholars." Koester, who specializes in early Christianity and early Christian archaeology, added that after seeing an evaluation of King's work from a colleague in the field, he was "absolutely convinced that this is a modern forgery."

The ABC News report states, “King’s paper has been submitted to the Harvard Theological Review, a peer-reviewed journal. The journal said it would await testing on the fragment’s ink to help determine its authenticity.”

For two thousand years, people have tried to defame Christianity and vilify Jesus Christ and Christians. The Bible has stood the test of time. God remains the same, yesterday, today, and forever.

Sounds like a feast! Pastoring the young is a very important task. They are the future. Have fun and don't eat too much!

We have family of our Priest attending our dinner, breaking of bread. The smells abound, love is in my kitchen fun and excitement are filled with cousins and nieces and uncles and Godparents. I am a low Pastor of the young. I am only ex-halted by the Love I receive. Just about 30 of us will break bread and criticize the work I do on my house and laugh and love. I hope the same for you.

"We must contend, with ourselves" "How mighty are we if we apply ourselves for the weak". I am so weak a spirit that I tremble for each Sunday and my sermon. But "to God be the Glory" lifts me up and carries me on. As do you sister.

      Diane,

Assume it real. No problem for Christians at all. It proves how real Christ was back at that time. But no matter you cannot assume it is true. And those who would hold it as some kind of truth, just like back then, do not get the notion of Christ.

We are not bound by evidences or proofs or of anything of this world. We are bound by Love and the Spirit. "And they will know we are Christians by our Love"

Thank you Michele! It's interesting how people try to "shock" Christians. They just don't get it.

Thank you so much for writing this hub. I knew it was a hoax when they reported it in the news. The one who submitted it would not tell anyone where it came from. A fragment of pager, with a few words that were torn and missing. How much can that tell us?

Wonderful hub. Voted up across the board. Well except for funny.
