Volunteering at the homeless shelter can be rewarding and satisfying. It is always a good feeling being able to help someone suffering or at least help someone get on their feet.

Neighbors Lending A Hand

The Jimmie Hale Mission was founded in 1944, by a kind man and his lovely wife, who saw the need for shelter, meals and to give comfort to the neediest of people. Birmingham's most needy and the homeless would be the ones to be served. The mission would be primarily used to feed the needy. The needs were so great, they continued on in their mission and now have the resources to help in more ways than just meals. Always go to the mission or any homeless shelter if you truly need help and they will assist you in one way or another. Jimmy Hale Missions go out of their way to help people who are having a hard time. This mission center is located in Birmingham, AL and is a very respected organization, that does a lot of good in the community. Some times the ones that come to the mission, just need someone to talk to.

I like how the sign says Mission Possible. The sign is more like the logo for Mission Impossible. This is an organization that wants to be able to provide hope to Birmingham's most helpless. They want to lift up instead of drag them down and make them feel worse than they already do. The plan is to boost self esteem and make them feel like they have some self worth. This organization can do that. There will never be a time when they would just answer with just words, those words will be put into action.

The Homeless Shelter is a place for the tired to come and rest and the hungry are able to get meals. The people who are hurting are able to come and get help. For many people, this may be their last hope and hopefully a start towards a changed new life. Jimmy Hale Missions and Bargain Center Thrift Stores are located all over the United States. Everything they sale is priced very low and affordable. Also, the mission helps in other areas such as feeding people, shelter and helping people find jobs and get an education. These shelters and programs are growing everyday thanks to donations and other assistance from volunteers all over the world.

You can always donate items to the Mission Possible Bargain Centers which are Jimmy Hale as well as The Mission thrift stores. I don't feel like I have done very little to help but, any time that I clean out around the house, we always donate to one of these centers. There are several centers all around the city of Birmingham. One major thrift store just opened up down the street from my house.

If you are able to donate items to the local centers, that can be found around town, these bins are emptied and the items that can be sold, and are sold at the different thrift stores around town. Please do not throw away used items from your home when you can donate them which in turn will be helping someone in need.

Jimmie's Personal Story

Jimmie was known as the town drunk. In 1944, he met to his surprise a very nice lady, who worked as a school teacher. Her name is Miss Jessie and they fell in love and married. An amazing story but it's inspirational and it's true.

After Jimmie became a Christian and sober, he had this huge desire to start The Mission. He wanted a place where homeless men and women could come to receive help and hope. At age 39, Jimmie passed away before the birth of his first child. His early death, was a result of his drinking. After his death, his wife continued with his vision. For ten years his wife worked diligently at the mission. Things started to look up after several diligent years of hard work and dedication. This help came in the form of Leo Shepura. So, for the next thirty six years, Leo and Jessie were co-laborers in the Jimmie Hale Mission.

Branches of The Mission

There are several organizations or branches of the mission since it's start date in 1944. It is dedicated to helping people whether your a man, women, kids, drug addicts and alcoholics.

1. Shepura Men's Center: A homeless shelter and recovery program for men.

2. Royal Pines Center: Rural recovery for men.

3. Jessie's Place: Intermediate shelter for homeless women & children.

4. Stewart Learning Center: A branch for education and employment help. This branch helps the men and women of The Mission return to the work force. So, this is not just a place for a meal but, a place to help transition men and women back into society.

5. Discovery Club: Bible clubs for public elementary school children.

6. Mission Possible Bargain Center: Thrift Store at the mission. Clothes are sold at discounted prices and the money goes back to help the mission.
