John 3:16-17

Updated on October 12, 2012

Christ is our Salvation.

John 3:16-17

King James Version (KJV)

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

For many years since I went to Okinawa Christian School back in the early 1990's, I have always pondered about these two verses. The biggest question I have asked is "WHY?". Now almost 20 years later, I have came to realization of how much God our Father in Heaven loves us. Here's my thoughts :

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

As I was reading this verse as a teenager, I was wondering if God loved the ones who do not believe in Him and would condemn the unbelievers. I was wrong. The Bible said, "For God so loved the WORLD." Now, in this world, we have unbelievers and believers in this planet called Earth. It doesn't matter who we are.

In this world, there are different type of skin colors, languages, heritages, disabilities, and on and on. God loves us all the same. It doesn't matter if this person is from Japan, China, America, Spain, etc... God loves us so much that He didn't want us to perish.

The word "perish" actually means " destroyed". (ἀπόλλυμι + apollumi)
When I was studying this, it made me realized how much God loved us so much in this world because He didn't want us to be DESTROYED! He gave up His Son, Jesus, and became the perfect sacrifice for us (Hebrews 10:14)! He died for our sins and paid the price so that whomever believes in Him, will have life in Heaven. What a wonderful God we serve! All we need to do is believe. (Luke 10:42 :But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. ). We can't earn it, buy it, or deserve it, we can only believe it to receive Salvation through Jesus Christ. He the only Way to Heaven (John 14:6 (KJV) :Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.)

Now the next verse I want to talk about is verse 17. Most churches that I have been to only use verse 16 and leave out the next verse. Here is the verse:

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Jesus came to save, not to condemn us. If He did come to condemn us, then it would be much harder to see Him as a Loving Savior. Love does not hurt, destroy, or kill. Only Satan himself does that. (John 10:10 (KJV)The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.) Jesus came to save us despite of our failure or mistakes we have made. I know that God forgave me for my mistakes because of what Jesus did for us at the Cross.

God won't force anyone to believe but He wants us to believe in Him through free will. Only through Christ, we can receive Salvation. It's a free gift, not something we earn or work for.
(Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God) Grace mean free favor that cannot be earn but as a gift.

All we need to do is believe!
