John's Gospel - a new look no 15
Like a sheep.
John 10:1-30: The Good Shepherd
We all would like to enjoy “an abundant life” as Jesus promises to provide it in Jn10:10. The problem is that for most people life is indeed far from abundant or “life in all its fullness” as the Good News Bible translates it. Living in a dangerous and difficult world the average person often goes astray and faces the many dangers that sheep without a shepherd face -danger from outside and dangers from within.
Like sheep we tend to follow the crowd into bad places and also battle to come to terms with discovering the green pastures and still waters of a soul in union with its shepherd. It is all really a matter of listening for the voice of the good shepherd and then following him into the places and protection that he has lovingly provided.
Sheep somehow have the stubborn desire to do it their own way and so end up in trouble. No wonder Jesus uses the metaphor to explain the need that we as humans have for guidance. Who better to follow that the Son of God? Different expressions are used to describe ‘The Way’, and it’s obvious advantages. “Abundant life” or “life in all its fullness” is the invitation as Jesus offers it. A reading of Ps.23 also describes it so beautifully in the inspired words of the poet David.
The invitation is to us today. The choice is yours and mine. Can you hear the invitation as it comes from the Good Shepherd? If so will you decide to follow? The reward is great and waiting for you to claim.
