John's Gospel - a new look no 17 Raising Lazarus

Updated on May 18, 2013

John 11:1-44

John 11:1-44: Raising Lazarus from the dead.

The amazing thing about this incident is that Jesus on hearing that his friend Lazarus was sick decided to stay where he was “for two more days”. We would have immediately have rushed to help and in so doing prevented Mary and Martha from going through the agony of losing their brother. The trouble is that we see our world through a limited viewpoint. Jesus on the other hand saw the so called “Big Picture!”

In order to achieve the healing of Lazarus and in so doing prove implicitly that he had power over death, as Jesus was again to prove personally in his resurrection, it was necessary for Lazarus to die. This was painful, but a small price to pay as Jesus was showing his disciples and friends that he was no ordinary person with ordinary powers.

John records this event so that as he and the other disciples saw it and believed, we too may” believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and believing may have life”. (John 20:30/31)

Here is this account is also the shortest verse in the Bible. John records in 11:35 “Jesus wept.” He still weeps for a lost world, for you and me.
