Joseph the healer

Updated on September 29, 2011

In written history there are no prophets of God who can come close to being as well documented as that of his prophet Joseph Smith. As a result of the extensive paper trail which follows him, it goes without saying that he must have the most healings on record as well. Now as miracles go there seem to be several variations on the level of intensity which we see them occur in our lives. Sometimes miracles can be as small as the lord delivering lost the car keys to the faithful, (which even I have been witness to such an occasion and miraculous delivery,) and in other instances it can be as large as witnessing Moses part the Red Sea.

I suppose it goes without saying that no matter what the miracle is, it can only be as big as the amount of people it has influenced or the lasting effect it has on the generations to come. In the instance of healing I have found dozens of modern day healings which have been mentioned by latter day saints whom I have conversed with. Many have attested to me the reality of seeing and feeling the physical healing power of the priesthood, as well as the emotional and faith building healings which are handed out by men of authority who bless their friends and families through the laying on of hands.

there is a diverse way of healing which was demonstrated by the Prophet Joseph. Some of which were in similitude of the acts performed by Jesus Christ. In every instance One must take care to note that every single blessing performed by Joseph Smith was in the name of Christ, and in every single instance the healing only took place within the ranks of faithful Latter Day Saints who professed belief in Jesus.

Joseph always attributed those miracles to the power of Jesus Christ and never took credit for them. He never said they were his own miracles, he never took credit for the power which belongs to God. Theologically speaking this is most significant because it squares with the established order of the priesthood and is in accordance with biblical standards.

Newel Night

The first recorded healing was that of Newel Night. Joseph recorded an incident where he cast a devil out of brother Knight after he became paraylized and started convulsing and moving violently and uncontrolably. In this instance Joseph simply rebuked the devil and commanded that it depart which it did. the incident was heard and witnessed by the neighbors.

Clinton Harris

in 1830 a man named Clinton Harris was in the presence of Joseph Smith as he was baptizing another individual, and he was off in the distance. He couldn't come down to the river bed to watch because he had a fever soar on his leg. the prophet then called over to Harris telling him to stand and walk down, and he would be fine. the man stood and shook his leg, and was able to walk to see the baptism, and from that point on his leg was healed.

The wife of Charles Dana

In 1835 Joseph was confronted by Charles Dana who's wife was very ill. From his own account he told of the prophet entering his house and administering to her while in bed, laying his hands on her, and administering to her. He then overpowered the evil spirit which was within and told Brother Dana that the sister would get better, and she did.

Mrs. John Johnson

Mrs. John Johnson was a woman who had a lame arm, and heard of Joseph's healing power. When Joseph came to see her, she was in the presence of a Meathodist minister. Joseph took her by the arm and pronounced her arm too be healed. Later the minister tried to make up a scientific reason as to why it had been healed at that particular instance, but it was too weak of a story for anyone to buy.

Joseph Smith Sr

There was a point in 1835 when there was an outbreak of cholerah and many of the saints were afflicted with the deadly disease, including Joseph's father. Though only he and another woman were delivered from the disease, they were both healed immediately from it, and it was given to Joseph to know that there were some people in life who are decreed to die at a certain point.

Elijah Fordham

An account from Wliford Wodruff denotes that there was a day in 1839 when the prophet healed a multitude of people who were sick from various afflictions, one in particular was Elijah Fordum who was on the verge of death. The prophet asked him a few questions on faith in Jesus Christ and then commanded him to be made whole in the name of Jesus Christ. To which he was immediately cleansed of his sickness.

Others who were healed that day were Benjamin Brown and his entire family, and Brigham young who was sick in bed, also Joseph bates Nobel. These actions caused quite a stir among unbelievers who began to follow Joseph around that day. at one point a man approached him and asked if he would heal his twin daughter who were only a few months old. but Joseph being short in time, gave a bandanna to Wilford Woodruff and told him to wipe their faces with it and they would be healed, and they were.

Samuel Rolf

during the building of the Nauvoo Temple a man by the name of Samuel Rolf was afflicted with a "fellon" which was a deep infection on his hand. At some point Joseph told Rolf to go and wash his hand in the font and he would be healed. Within a week it was healed. Doctors before then had told him that it would take several months for it to be healed and advised it to be cut off.

Artemus Millet

Artemus Millet, a neighbor of Joseph, was sick with cholera and was administered to by him after he had heard a loud groan coming from the house near by. Joseph laid hands on him after pressed through a large crowd of people in the house, and gave him a blessing. Instantly the vomiting had ceased and he began to feel better from that moment.

You have a photo of my grandfather, Newel Knight Young, posted to the side of Newel Night (Knight). This photo was taken on 13 July 1898 when Newel married my grandmother Tina Buchanan.

I absolutely agree, none of his healings were performed without including the mighty name of Christ.

An interesting hub. Healing is an important part of the Gospel bet it is not to gain glory for men.
