A little insight shared by Pastor Dianna Brevan of Jesus Is Lord Fellowship in Iverness Florida: "The name for Psalms in the Hebrew Bible is “Tehillim” which means “praise.” Our English word “psalms” comes from the Greek word “psalmoi” which originally meant a song or poem sung with instrumental accompaniment. By New Testament times, however, the word simply meant to “sing a hymn, to celebrate the praises of God in song."
The Psalm is the largest book in the Bible. It is inclusive of a set of (5) five books they were the temple hymnbook and the devotional guide for the Jewish people. The Greek Septuagint terms it “Psalmoi” meaning poems accompanied by music! The Latin title “Liber Psalmorum” meaning Book of Psalms.
Book 1 PSALM 1 – 41, Book 2 PSALM 42-72, Book 3, PSALM 73 – 89, Book 4 PSALM 90 – 106 & Book 5 107 – 150. Here within these magnificent Psalms are mega spiritual themes. ~ PSALM 1 ~
Two Ways of Life Contrasted
Theme: Life's two roads. The life of the faithful person is contrasted with the life of a faithless person.
This intriguing 1st Psalm is the “Prescription” by which one can be truly Spiritually Blessed in every way!
“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.”
It is important to know who God is! The world beckons us to travel the wide road that leads to destruction. This is the contrary path to the Narrow road that leads to the Lord! Here we are encouraged to extol and obey God above all else! Those who are around us, friends, family, and coworkers associates are able to influence us to some degree. Their well meant intentions and sometimes seemingly wise advice is often sought after. But is it godly advice they offer?
When we spend time with those that mock God who are often non believers it should be to win them over to Jesus Christ. It is evident that we must live and work among those who do not believe. But we should influence them rather than them influencing us… The spiritual warfare can at times be quite subtle. It often seeks to get you to lay aside what God has to say and embrace the world’s liberal thinking! We have much Freedom & Liberty in the Lord! However, there are some issues that God is quite clear on! When we or others become indifferent to God’s view we mock Him… This can actually lead to a stronghold in your life. Here in this verse we are warned as to who we should listen to? True friends do not encourage us to compromise our godly values. True friends are honest with you!
As believers God's Will & Way should always be our First Priority!
...Even when things are not going well… When we diligently obey God we are truly blessed.
“But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.” There is power in the Word of the Lord! It is our Spiritual Food to energize us and empower us to live victoriously for Him! This does not mean that things will always go our way; quite the contrary! It means that when we are meditating on His Word we have our attention focused in the right direction. We are not in denial but in a “Tranquil state of Trust!” Here we know and realize that the Lord has everything under His control! As we focus on His Word at the same time we are entrusting to Him whatever is going on about us. We are shifting our burden to HIM! When we find ourselves shifting away we must redirect our attention to HIM! It is in His Word we find Grace, Joy, Peace and direction for the journey! His Word becomes for each of us “A Lamp to my feet and a Light for my path.” Psalm 119.
The Word of God is so powerful! Jesus birth, sinless life, crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection mean something! It is here we learn that He has ALL POWER over the flesh. We were created for “HIS GLORY!” By Him and for HIM! As we look to Him we realize that life goes so much deeper than what we see. It is important to begin to live before “An audience of One!” Meaning we live to please GOD above all else! He is everywhere we are! God has a plan for the lives of those who seek HIM first above all else. "He is like a tree planted by the streams of water which yields fruit in its season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does shall prosper!"
We are living in interesting times and there are many choices readily at our disposal; however if you want a favorable outcome it is always wise to first seek what the Lord has to say! So often we want to “do our own thing” and then expect God to work it out. He is not a genie… God tells us not to walk in the counsel of the ungodly… Discernment is important!
As we are obedient to the Lord the Fruit of His Spirit should become increasingly evident in our daily lives! We should begin to embrace His way realizing that life goes on through eternity! Momentarily for a season when there is much going on about us we must cling to Him and meditate on His WORD! We must learn to overcome evil with GOOD! This way we can rest knowing that it is not always how things appear! “Man looks on the outside appearance, but GOD looks at the heart.” I Samuel 16. His Word purifies and washes our hearts… Regular spiritual baths in His Word are recommended! You can then have His inner Peace that surpasses the understanding of man. In the Lord we can always find encouragement because we know that the wicked will perish and cease from troubling... In the meantime we are “Not to be Conformed to this world, but Transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12. God is Faithful and continually watches over us! PRAISE GOD!
