Joyce Meyer -- the Woman and Her Words

Updated on June 14, 2016

Ever clicked through your TV and landed on a show where a very large auditorium is filled with people closely listening to this lady with short brown hair and a powerful voice? Is she just captivating the crowd? Did you stay long enough to find out who she might be? There is almost no doubt that you stumbled upon Joyce Meyer of "Enjoying Everyday Life".

Joyce Meyer is a very practical, no-nonsense preacher who has earned the right to be heard. Having come from an upbringing that most would say would surely doom a person to a life of heartache and failure, she took a 180° turn when she discovered that God can make all-things new. From there, with a minimal education behind her, she found her niche as a Bible teacher and eventually gained international renown. This is no small thing!

Her positive message is this: 'If God can take a mess like me and make me what I am today, He can turn your life around, too!' She makes no bones about it as she proclaims, with humor, that she was possibly one of God's toughest cases!

Joyce Meyer's Message

Joyce Meyer relies heavily upon the Word of God as she shares her message of hope. Emphazing that man's wisdom could not have changed her no matter how hard she tried, she repeats over and over again that just hearing about changing is not enough.

People must take action and put what they've heard into play in their lives. It all starts and ends with the Word of God, the Bible, and thinking new thoughts. "Power thoughts", as she calls them.

Available on television and in print, Joyce's messages are freely shared on her website and many videos are available on YouTube as well.

Joyce Meyer Ministries produces a free magazine that can be ordered on their website. She also teaches her conferences at a variety of locations throughout the year, admission is free. Arrive early, though, to assure seating. Her conferences are very popular. Again, her conference schedule is also on her website.

About Joyce Meyer

Born in 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri, Joyce Meyer had a rough upbringing in a household where her father repeatedly abused her sexually for most of her young life. Growing up in this oppressive atmosphere of victimization--and it's associated shame--made Joyce a bitter and negative person. More about her past and recovery in Healing and Hope.

In her desire to escape her surroundings, she did what many young people do; she got married. Joyce married a part-time salesman who was dishonest, unfaithful and, of course, abusive. That marriage only lasted five years. You will hear Joyce mention both her father and first husband, telling of the difficult events of her life but also how God walked her through the process of forgiving them. Forgiveness is a key, Joyce teaches, to our own healing and happiness. (See Why Forgive for more.)

Following her divorce, she later met and, in 1967, married an engineer, David Meyer. Dave has been Joyce's soul mate, balancing her fiery personality with his peaceful demeanor (she teases about it often) and the wise business administrator of Joyce Meyer Ministries. Today they continue to be happily married and have four grown children.

Joyce Meyers TV, Radio & Print Media

In addition to being a world-class Bible teacher, with her 30-minute daily syndicated television show "Enjoying Everyday Life" reaching over 3 billion people in more than 200 countries, Joyce Meyer is also on radio and a New York Times best-selling author. She has written over 70 Bible-based motivational books, the most popular of which remains "The Battlefield of the Mind". Originally written for an adult audience, other additions have been created such as a companion workbook and two variations specifically for teenagers and younger children. Joyce often says "where the mind goes, the man will follow".

Her most recent best-seller is "Power Thoughts: 12 Strategies to Win the Battle of the Mind". Seeing a pattern? Her message always gets around to the attitude of our hearts. What are we thinking. What are we doing. How can that be changed for lasting, positive results.

The Birth of Joyce Meyer Ministries

So how did Joyce Meyer Ministries begin? It started in 1976 when Joyce had a life changing experience as she was driving her car, crying out to God. She heard His voice address her by name, and felt the presence of God in that car like nothing she had ever experienced before. Like liquid love, it enveloped her and she knew that God was the answer to the problems of her life. She accepted the call on her life that day and turned everything over to Him.

In a May 19, 2005 interview on Larry King Live, Joyce Meyer tells of those first days: "I didn't have any knowledge. I didn't go to church. And I had a lot of problems, and I needed somebody to kind of help me along. And I think sometimes even people who want to serve God, if they have got so many problems that they don't think right and they don't act right and they don't behave right, they almost need somebody to take them by the hand and help lead them through the early years."

She started out her walk with Jesus by being voraciously hungry to know Him better. Her avid study of His Word lead to her desire to share her knowledge with others. She started by first teaching a Bible class at their church in St. Louis Missouri. Just four years later, she became associate pastor of the church.

By 1985, Joyce's Bible classes had become so popular that the crowds were outgrowing her surroundings. She took a big and difficult step of faith. Though she loved her position at the church dearly, she followed God's leading to branch out and go on her own, establishing Life in the Word Ministries. (Later to be renamed: Enjoying Everyday Life) Her classes grew to conferences and many guest appearances. Books, radio and television were soon to follow. Today Joyce's ministry consists of her own teaching as well as reaching out to help others through orphanages and other outreaches around the world.

The Education

Joyce Meyer is a great example of someone who came from humble, and rocky, beginnings and against-all-odds became a success. With only a high school education, the graduate of O'Fallon Technical High School in St. Louis Missouri, Joyce was basically self-taught.

When you listen to her preach, you'll catch an occasional grammatical slip that perhaps the more "highly educated" might not make but that's one of the many reasons she is loved by so many (this writer included). She is REAL! No frills. You get what you get! Her many fans would not change even one thing about her. Especially how she talks and her great sense of humor.

But Joyce did not stop there. She earned a doctoral degree from Life Christian University in Tampa Florida and has be given an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree from Oral Roberts University.

Joyce's Struggles

No life is perfect, even when things are going well. There will always be hurdles to overcome and inevitably someone will take exception to your success. This has been the case for Joyce Meyer. Always gracious and unmoved, Joyce has come through a tough Senate investigation that eventually proved her ministry to be financially sound and worthy of keeping it's tax exempt status. Her organization made some significant changes in their financial structure as a result of the probe but, by and large, the ultimate outcome was that in October of 2007 they got a clean bill of health.

Speaking of health, Joyce has battled with health issues that lead to having to have a hysterectomy and a battle with breast cancer. In a recent interview on CBN's 700 Club she explained "In my early days of ministry, I did so much every day that I did not get proper rest, did not eat right, and drank coffee to keep myself going. Then, in my mid-thirties, I started to get sick often and had hormone imbalances. I had to take estrogen shots every ten days. Eventually I had a hysterectomy and was diagnosed with breast cancer. I needed immediate surgery for the fast-growing, estrogen-dependent tumor. I struggled for several more years to get my body back on track." She wrote her book "Look Great, Feel Great" based on health lessons she learned along the way.

Joyce Meyer: Where to Find Her

It also airs on a variety of local television affiliate.

Thanks for writing about Joyce Meyer. I think she is the best minister in the whole world. I absolutely love this woman. She is so right on about just everything. She's absolutely awe-inspiring. I have watched her on TV many times and always get something out of it. Through your hub I am learning some things about her I didn't know.

Sometimes she offers her CDs for "a gift of any amount," and I seem to gravitate to those types of offers and am just about to mail off one of those orders to her, along with her year-end questionnaire. Sometimes she gives freebies that are just awesome, like a booklet she sent out to her mailing list a few months back that outlined a number of areas of social injustice and poverty that need to be addressed -- it was like nothing I'd ever seen before and I wished I had more copies of it to give to people. Right now she's giving away a little booklet about being blessed by God. Maybe sometime I'll write a hub about Joyce. She has a uniqueness about her and a deep wisdom like I've never seen before or since.

Thanks MsDora. I'm not sure whether Joyce, herself, saw it but her ministry did and sent me a big FB thank you! (And a nice gift in the mail, as well.) They're top notch!

I was thinking as I started to read that I hadn't heard of her, which is not surprising because I rarely watch TV. But I saw the name of her book and I realized I have that and I read that - the Battlefield of the Mind. I like how she distinguishes between getting and receiving in the video too. Thanks for the hub, Sineo Pies. I'll be receptive as I drift to sleep in a few minutes:)
