Kathy Troccoli - "Love One Another"

Updated on August 9, 2013

Ms. Troccoli's Inspirational Music

Kathy Troccoli is a Christian artist who writes and sings songs that truly reach the core of all people. She has written songs about being a sinner and how God’s faith and love never falter even when ours does. I relate to her music, and it picks me up when I am down and strengthens me.

Meeting Kathy Troccoli

I had the pleasure of meeting her once. I was traveling to New York City to visit my brother back in 1997. I sat down next to this gorgeous lady who had a yellow legal pad that she was filling up with her list of things to do at an amazing rate. I thought, “She looks so familiar.”

This was a time when the airlines still served drinks and meals, and the flight attendant came by to take our choice of meal. She said, “And you would like the chicken, Ms. Troccoli?”

My ears perked up because Kathy Troccoli had been my favorite Christian artist for years. I sat there for a good 30 minutes before I got the nerve to ask, “Are you Kathy Troccoli?”

She said, “Yes, I am,” and smiled at me. I must have been glowing, and I was trying to “play it cool,” because I did not want to be that pesky fan.

Trying Not to Make a Fool of Myself

Then, it just rolled out of me, “You are my favorite artist. I have your music in my checked bags. I carry it everywhere and share it with everyone.”

She was so gracious. She said, “Thank you. That is a wonderful compliment.” She looked down at the Frank Perreti novel that I was reading, and continued, “I just took a Christian cruise with him. He gave a wonderful presentation.”

Still star-struck, I asked, “I can’t get to your tapes for you to sign, but would you sign my book?” She did and we both laughed.

Visiting with Kathy Troccoli

She asked me if I was married, if I had children, and if I went to church. I told her I was married and had children and we went to our town’s Southern Baptist church.

She looked at me and asked, “And I am your favorite artist?” You see, she is Catholic and many people do not recognize Catholics as Christians.

I said, “Absolutely! God speaks to me through your music. I know that you believe that Christ is the only way, and that is what is important, not Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, or any of the other denominations. It is our belief in Christ that holds us together.”

Learning About the "Love One Another" Project

She said, “Ya know, I am pleased to hear you say that. I have had some doors closed in the Christian music industry because I am Catholic. I did have a very positive experience, though.”

“What?” I asked.

“Well, I had this idea to bring several top Christian artists together to sing a song to benefit people with AIDS. People like Amy Grant and Carmen were invited. Because of negative response to my Catholicism in the past, I didn’t know if anyone would show up.”

“Did they?” I asked, thinking how could anyone doubt this woman’s dedication to Christ.

“Yes, they did. We recorded ‘Love One Another’ a few months ago and it is on my Love and Mercy album. All proceeds for the single go to helping people with AIDS.”

Again, my star struck heart jumped. “I just bought that album, and the radio station back home plays ‘Love One Another’ all the time. I love it. It speaks of Christ's unconditional love for us.”

A Short Flight but an Amazing Lesson

She and I visited as if we were old friends for a while. To me it was an amazing day. I am sure she has forgotten it by now because of her busy schedule. I learned that her perseverance in her faith in Christ had made her successful and she was the most unassuming lady. She gave all credit to Christ for every word she has written and sung.

It also confirmed my belief in Christ loving everyone with unconditional love, and He will make Himself known when He knows He is needed. Just as He did when Ms. Troccoli feared no one would show up for the recording session. He was faithful through her doubts because He knew how important the project was to many people around the world. So many times He has been there for me.

Enjoy the music and listen to the wonderful message.

"Love One Another" Lyrics by Kathy Troccoli (video performance below)

Look around the world today
There is anger there is hate
Losing hope we're broken and in need

And I Know that it grieves his heart
When his people stand apart
Cause we're the only Jesus they will see

Love one another
And live as one in his name
Love one another
We can tear down walls by his grace

Love is patient, love is kind
Love is faithful, all of the time
It is never proud and never rude
Doesn't envy, doesn't boast
Doesn't seek its own you know
It rejoices humbly in the truth

If we all forgive each other
Jesus said
Love, love one another
As I've loved you

We are one in the spirit
We are one in the Lord

They'll know we are Christians
By our love

Oh Kelly, I was on Cloud 9! I am sure she was just "thrilled" when we landed, and we were standing at baggage claim. My brother came to pick me up, and I dragged him over to meet her. Her story was so inspiring and full of love for others.

Thanks so much for dropping by! :-)

I really enjoyed reading about your experience! I so admire the ability of everyone being able to support each other in their posititve beliefs....I don't care what faith a person belongs to as long as they are kind to everyone and respectful of our differences.

Very cool you got to meet this lady - I could feel your excitement as I read:-) loved it!

Great hub that to me, reflects a synchronous and grace filled moment in your life for it surely was no mere coincidence that you ended up seated on that plane next to your spiritual idol/favorite singer. Thanks so much for sharing this uplifting story and Kathy Troccoli's music video.

      Hi Denise!

I felt like a little kid! I just didn't know what to do then it just poured out, but she was so good about soothing the situation. Her music touches me so deeply. When a friend or family member is having a hard time, I buy her CDs for them in hopes of lifting their spirits.

I highly recommend LOVE AND MERCY and CORNERS OF EDEN. You can find more samples of her music on You Tube.

Thanks for dropping by and the votes and clicks! So glad you read my hub! :-)

      Hi MoChi!

Her voice is truly the best. She could sing for Broadway. I have all her Christian CDs. I also love her song, "Everything Changes," which was on the Pop charts in the early 80s. I believe it was a blessing to meet her and to hear her story. She is a beautiful lady inside and out. Thanks for dropping by and reading!! :-)

      Hey Cybersister,

It ws really neat to meet her for those few hours. She is so personable. I never really thought about the differences of the denominations as being road blocks to Christianity, but she definitely had felt the discrimination in the music industry. If you read her lyrics, you know she has love and faith in Christ that are strong and inspiring to others. Thankfully, her project was not effected. :-) Thanks for dropping by and reading!!

Wow! What a wonderful day for you-one that made a lasting impression. How fun. Voted up and across the board. You and I are very similar...I could just imagine myself sitting there doing exactly what you were telling yourself, "play it cool" and all the while the inner child is jumping up and down with excitement and glee.

Well, you have sparked my interest. I love all types of music, especially something that touches the soul. I will be sure to check out her work. Any special recommendations?

Enjoyed this bubbly review of KT's music.

Hiya! Great, great hub. Kathy is one of my favorite artists as well - and one of my Catholic sisters. I've loved her since her early days, and it's her openness with the love of Christ in her music and her life that's the reason for it.

What a blessing to have met her - thanks so much about sharing this experience. :D

How neat that you met an artist that you are such a fan of and better still that she did not disappoint. I must say that I have never heard that some people do not consider Catholics to be Christians - I always assumed that Christians were everyone who believed in Christ, regardless of the particular denomination or even whether one was a member of a traditional church. I don't understand people who are hung so up on labels and little nit picky differences that they miss the big picture. It's what is in a person's heart and their actions that are the most important in my eyes, not the group with which they are affiliated.

I know, they were quite stylish, though, for the time. :-) You are exactly right - denomination does not matter at all, only the acceptance of the gift of salvation. Thanks for dropping by and making me smile!!

LOL. That video is so '90s - the hair and the music! Really good message, though. Great story. And it's very true that some Catholics are Christians, just as some Baptists, Methodists, etc. are not. It's not church membership or denominational affiliation that saves you. It's accepting the gift of salvation and Christ's role as Lord of your life. Voted up. :-)
