Kindhearted People: The most Mistreated Lot

Updated on March 18, 2015

Kind Hearted : Very soft and Vulnerable

When I see kind persons never uttering any word in retaliation of harsh words and misbehaviour,my heart craves for ameliorating their suffering. A question also arises in my mind as to why they are perceived as timid and not as having an impeccable strength instead. My mind broods over the possible reasons of this peculiar phenomenon of human behaviour. After a great deliberation , I compel to accpept that it is due to the utter ignorance that other people assume the kind hearted people as weak and vulnerable.

If a person is kind hearted and listens everything whether praises or derogatory remarks without any reaction, people take it for granted to mistreat him. A snake can save itself by hissing a little while not biting anybody. So, kind hearted people should also adopt a mild toughness when provoked in an uncivilized way. When Christ says about turning the other cheek, it's meaning is not literal. Turning the other cheek means that when somebody is behaving with you in a rude manner, you should make him know the right behavior.

How to inculcate right behavior ? Through teaching the rogue elements the right kind of morality and decent way of thinking and living. Such a remarkable magic can be done by the wise one, who is both kind hearted and stern too if need arises. This is the real meaning of turning the other cheek.Kindness is indeed a virtue, but without a requisite force, people do not give a proper attention to it and often ridicule this trait in a person. Sometimes, kind persons are assumed as pure simpletons which is not a correct view. From Jesus Christ to Mahatma Gandhi, simple persons, though imbued with extraordinary intellect, were not treated well in their life time.

Need for Protection from Maltreatment

Innocence is ingrained in kind hearted people; and they imbibe the moral values truly, and are ever ready to suffer any kind of torture to keep those values intact. Though being so kind, they remain bereft of some kind of toughness which is very much required to be able to save oneself from any violence or mistreatment. Not only humans, but it has also been seen in the animals that they show a kind of resistance when teased beyond limit.

All kind hearted persons should also realize that without maintaining some kind of safeguard , they are going to be mistreated at the hands of cunning and haughty persons. Nobody except they themselves can make efforts for protection from the violence and torture being inflicted upon them. Have you observed a plant of rose ? It grows thorns for its protection and thus saves itself from being trampled upon, and roses also feel safe under the shadow of the thorns. It is all wise for kind guys to have a little bit of aggressiveness, and surely it cannot be termed as a bad trait being a desired necessity.

kindness and a Little Aggressiveness: An Ideal Blending

To be purely kind hearted being is not good these days. If some kind of aggressiveness is not visible in the nice people, they are always prone to exploitation and maltreatment. So, in my view, it is not at all bad if such precious beings devise some kind of defense system for their survival. It is in their own interest if they express a facade of anger to dawn upon uncivilized persons an impression that they can be countered with much more strength.

kindness coupled with a mild aggressiveness is a fine blending for protection from evil doers.Had Jesus Christ displayed a little aggressiveness and allowed his followers to inculcate in them a little toughness, he would not have been killed at the hands of cruel persons at that time. It is only because of his simplicity and kind bent of mind that some people misunderstood him and even killed him in their ignorance. Thus, humanity lost a great soul and deprived itself of his vast wisdom about kingdom of God.

In a like manner, Mahatma Gandhi was also mistreated and laughed at in the early stages of his struggle and was jailed numerous times. However, as the struggle progressed, he showed a determination not to bow before the oppressors meekly and instead engage with them in a fierce fighting, though with his unique sword of non violence. Thus, he gained freedom for his country, but again misunderstood by his own countrymen and was killed just after independence.

Alter your Attitude Towards kind Persons

All such people who mistreat kind hearted persons, should keep in mind that they deprive themselves of invaluable insight and right direction of life. On the contrary, if they look upon the kind hearted persons with admiration and respect, they, in return, will receive all wisdom with full warmth and kindness. With a well behaved attitude, all the negative traits will disappear from their minds and goodness will spring forth.

It is in their own interest if people realize that softness of the kind hearted is not something to be ridiculed and scoffed at. Rather, all the reverence should be showered on such people who are the real assets of humanity.

A story goes there about Mahatma Buddha and a dacoit named Angulimal ( his name Angulimal was assigned notoriously as he used to kill his victims and wear their fingers as garlands). One day, Angulimal came face to face with Buddha. Seeing the Buddha, Angulimal shouted,"stop". Buddha stopped with a dignified posture without any trace of fear in his eyes and responded," I have stopped, when will you stop ? ". Mahatma Buddha was a kind hearted soul, but he was also full of unique strength and was utterly fearless.

The dacoit came into the spell of such a great strength that Mahatma Buddha exhibited, and his heart melted at the fearless sight of the saint. The said dacoit then altered his lifestyle altogether. His life was greatly affected after this encounter, and he became the disciple of the saint. This story makes it amply clear that kind hearted guys are in reality very energetic and strong people, but they seldom express it.

Knowing thus, people should keep in mind that kind persons should not be disrespected the least by the brazen elements in their ignorance. Rather, we must appreciate their politeness and try to gain closeness of their magnanimous hearts. This way, we can be greatly benefited from their wisdom and grace.

kind Persons Should also Learn Toughness from the rude Ones

It is ironical that rogue elements need to learn from the kind hearted the values that they are ignoring in their pride, and at the same time, kind hearted should also take a little cue from the rogues to become a little tough when an occasion demands so.

It is said of simple persons that most of the times, they keep silent and are not easily provoked, but it is also true that a kind of volcano erupts out when they are put to an excessive exploitation and incessant torture. It has also been seen that when the rogue elements come face to face with such an avatar of kind persons, all their rudeness and cruelty comes to an abrupt halt.

I am not talking of saintly historical figures, but we can have a glimpse of such persons of divinity around us in this present age too. Have you observed how the uncivilized and cruel persons mistreat such innocent persons, but they lick the boots of those who are more powerful than them and can make a drastic change in their careers if provoked even a bit.

A real wisdom is to accord respect to all alike whether mighty or weak, wealthy or poor, educated or illiterate, related or unrelated and so on. This is an ideal way of living and only through this way, peace can be instilled in our lives. In a nutshell, we must let kindness flourish all around and strive with all our efforts to save the kind hearted guys from harassment in any place whether in home or office/establishment.

Can a truthful, kind and honest person survive in the present times?

I have not noticed this phenomenon of bad treatment to those who perform kindly acts in this country - Australia. Perhaps I haven't been attentive enough. I do know that kind acts are performed here on enormous and heroic scale. For example thousands of non-paid volunteer fire-fighters turn out to fight wild fires. On many an occasion a firefighter might lose his own home to the flames whilst being elsewhere trying to save anothers. But such acts of kindness are ackknowledged by the many. they are praised for their actions, never put upon or put down.

Kindheartedness is always a virtue. Kind people are kind no matter what, and they are not expecting awards for their kindness. That said, it would mean so much if they could receive some appreciation for what they do.

Great hub! Very interesting and well put. What are your thoughts on the kindhearted changing into the rude counterpart internally, and also displaying a biased view on those around him?

This is a very good hub. I do feel that kind hearted people can often be too easily taken advantage of. I noticed Tom mentioned volunteer fire fighters in Australia. Yes they are greatly appreciated (I am one) but also taken advantage of by the Government, because they do a dangerous and difficult job for no payment, and little reward. I agree, no matter how kind hearted you are you still need to have an inner strength to stand up for what you believe. Voted up.

Thanks, John. Really appreciate your response ,supporting inner strength in kind persons. You caught my point correctly. Here in India, we have a saying in Hindi ," where Sun can't reach, the poet arrives there". Have a good day, dear.

One solution to this problem is to realize that around 1-3% of the people will take advantage of the kind, using their assistance without reciprocating and then treating them badly because they were dumb enough to give to a leech.

Then make a deliberate effort to recognize those who will only take advantage of you instead of reciprocate or at least show appreciation and never help them.

I get the same feeling as you with regard to kind people. It seems that people who are kind are, indeed, seen as weak. The fact is, kind people exhibit love in a very natural way.

Harish, I do believe that kind people do survive but it is not always easy. I did not answer your poll. It is not a question like black or white, it is different shades of gray. I have a question for you. How do you think Jesus would be treated here today?

Oh, before I forget, Welcome to HP!

You are so right. The question about poll is just too much and can't be replied so easily. Just like this question, the question raised by you is also too much. I am in awe of the Jesus Christ and even as much as an ocean of words cannot utter the greatness and glory of this exalted and very pious soul ! Shyron, it is so kind of you to have visited this very humble hub and offered kind comments. I am really very grateful to you.

Great article! It raises a lot of interesting questions.

Perhaps the kind hearted people are kind hearted people because they do not engage in confrontations. Or some hold the belief that one has to pick their battles carefully. It depends on each individual I suppose - not everyone is a Warrior.

I for one do not turn the other cheek, I am not a masochist (lol jk). On a more serious note though, I do not think turning the other cheek is good because it can lead to abuse, or encouraging the bully. I am not fond of bullies.

I can always lean back on my martial arts training. I think that made a big difference in my life, in terms of confidence and holding my ground if necessary. Even if one is not a Warrior though, Warriors are around - ask for help and it shall come.

      Cheers!

Mr. Happy, so nice of you to have visited and graced this hub with your so insightful and kind comments. In fact, your words truly reflect the gist of this piece. Mythology is also abuzz with such wonderful and great personalities who were tender-hearted in the sphere of finer sensibilities of our existence but were also very strong and as hard as a rock when faced with unrightousness and anarchy. I am really grateful to you for such elaborate and kind comments. Thank you very much.

Harisprasad.....I feel as you do and as you have shared so beautifully with your readers. The kindness of others is a gift to be treasured....not misused or taken for granted. My Dad always said, "Never make the mistake, to push a GOOD man too far."

I believe it is the goodness within us that leads us to frown upon and push against those who would do harm & damage to his fellowman. The unkind, simply close their eyes to abuse and walk away.

This is a lovely hub. UP++ pinned & tweeted

fpherj48, what a wonderful comment you have presented here ! Your dad 's words are so true - Never make the mistake, to push a GOOD man too far. Also your view that our goodness rises against injustice and exploitation all around is so apt and nice. In fact, this is altogether a different perspective and gives a fresh insight into this phenomenon called kindness. I am really grateful for your valuable comments. Thank you very much. Have a nice day.

Before I became saved I was the type of person who would not hold her tongue. However, after God touched my heart my mouth became a blessing to people instead of a curse. When people are mean spirited, I understand hurting people hurt other's so I will try to talk to them about Jesus and how He healed my broken soul. But, if they are not receiving, I walk away. The bible says to protect your heart with all diligence for out of it springs the issues of life' I refuse to allow someone's bitterness to take me to a place God does not want me to be. However, I refuse to be a door-mat. I let anyone know right off hand I'm a respectful person who expects the same- if I don't get it I know I have a choice so I walk away and leave them to God... Loved this topic voted up!

It is an irony that the most fine quality called kind heartedness is often considered as a weakness. I don't know why people take in the wrong notion. You have brilliantly narrated a good topic with your own class style. I wish all read this and learn a little bit. Thank you for sharing. Keep on writing. Best of luck.

Sunil, it is an interesting fact to be pondered that virtue of kindness and kind persons lost their charm in the present world. The reason being that there were a few persons like Sri Rama and Sri Krishna, who were a fine blending of kindness and strength. This golden trait became a rarity after a great passage of time. It is a fact that even a country, though very tolerant and peaceful one, cannot afford to be absolutely passive and should exhibit power and strength. I'm glad you visited this hub and offered such nice comments. Thank you very much. All peace. :-)

As you have suggested, hissing (not biting) is the best course. Sri Ramakrishna too says the same thing in his famous story the Cobra and the Brahmachari.

A suggestion: Present day formatting guidelines (for articles) recommend usage of short paragaphs (max. 3-5 sentences per paragraph). That enhances readability. Please consider this in formatting your articles.

I hear you, Bro. So true. Sometimes I experience this myself. People mistake humility for weakness and will treat you badly. Still, some see it though, and do miss you when you are not there.

Love as you know is the greatest force and will eventually triumph.

You are a true brother of the Way, Harish.

Ramakrishna describes us as people who take hemp. We sit in a circle and pass it around. Strange explanation, but it seems to me that He is enamoured of the intoxication that passes between Sadhakas of the Higher Life. Om Shanti!
