Lay down the flag
Lift your arms up in worship to Jesus
I have been thinking a lot about idol worship lately, and I think that there is so much of it going on all around-everywhere.
Any time that something is put ahead of Jesus in our lives, that something can be construed as being idol worship.
Take for instance the flag of a nation. Many times we hear people speaking about the flag, how someone is or has insulted ‘our flag’ yet when they speak ill of our Lord and saviour they do not get as upset. Should we not put down the flag and lift up our hands to worshipping Jesus instead?
I know that some people will say that their flag represents their nation, which stands for democracy, freedom and justice etc, but does it really? Does your country really stand for those things? Do you not think that Jesus stands for those things and a lot more, more than a mere piece of fabric? Doesn't He deserve your love, praise, worship more than that flag?
There are many idols in peoples lives, some include sports teams, athletes, money, houses, cars, spiritual leaders…too many to mention.
Any person, place, thing-anything that is placed above Jesus is an idol.
We must realize that all earthly things will pass away and the only thing left is our relationship, or lack thereof with Jesus.
Nations will come and go, flags will disappear, sports teams will fade away and our bank accounts will vanish some-day, everything on this earth will someday be gone and forgotten. But Jesus will remain forever.
Your country and my country, as much as we love it, is in all reality meaningless. We say our nation is the best in the world…everyone believes that their country is the best. But it will be gone someday. So let me ask you this, what about the people? It is useless to worship your country and pray for it if you do not pray for the people.
In reality, we must pray for the people in our respective nations, but should we not pray for every person in every nation around the world? Should we not pray for the salvation of those who follow islam? Did I just shock you? The truth is, those who are muslim extremists, who are murdering people by the hundreds need our prayers. If they come to the Lord, would they not stop murdering? What a great witness for the Lord they can be!
Will you pray for them, or are you holding on to anger, hatred and bitterness? Do you think hating them shows loyalty to your country? Or will you be loyal to Jesus and forgive them as Jesus commands us to? Remember everything that was done to Jesus, the brutality He went through for each and everyone of us, and what did He say when He hung on the cross?
Luke 23: 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
I guess what it comes down to is this, put away the worldly things, put away the idols and lift up your hands to the Lord and seek Him, His words, His wisdom and hunger after His will for your life.
How many of you pledge allegiance to your country, flag, queen etc, but have never pledged allegiance to the Lamb…to Jesus? Where have you placed your allegiance?
Flag waiving does nothing, Jesus praising is everything.
7 He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water.”
2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
And God spoke all these words:2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.3 “You shall have no other gods before[a] me.4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
“‘Do not make idols or set up an image or a sacred stone for yourselves, and do not place a carved stone in your land to bow down before it. I am the Lord your God.
