Loose your identity to gain GOD!
Subtle Ego and the SELF
I was just pondering what topic to choose. It dawned on me that one must loose his identity to gain God. For instance there is a glass of water and you want to fill it with milk. What you naturally do is pour out the water from the glass and make it empty so that you can fill it up with Milk. In spirituality also, we follow the same. Empty yourself completely of all preconceptions. The mind naturally conceive many things and our sub conscious is the seat of all preconceptions, prejudices and opinions. Saibaba has said that the Heart is a chair where only one can occupy at a time. In the present time, mostly mammon occupy the heart. Only when the mammon is driven out, God can be seated. Now let us deal with the term 'identity'. Most of us identify ourselves with the physical form and mind. We are aware that the body is a temporary vesture and mind is a mad monkey. Whether one is a rationalist or spiritualist, every one is aware that bodies die. It may be a king or a saint or even an Avatar. Every body undergoes definite death and it is entombed or burnt as per the customs in each religion. Since we identify ourselves with bodies, each one consider himself as separate from the rest and these result in many emotions like, love, hate, jealousy, pride, attachment etc., These emotions accumulate in our sub conscious without our being aware of it. They come to the surface at the appropriate time and circumstance and make the man a slave to these emotional patterns. These negative qualities result in utter hatred, and violence. When communities develop such hatred, it results in communal violence which may lead to war among nations even. The sages, saints and prophets who have come into this world tried their level best to quench this fire by their soothing wisdom but the ego filled individual never listens to such sage advise. Hence first of all one should loose this false identity with the body/mind complex which results in grief and despair. It is easier said than done. Ego is a very subtle quality that thrives on the body conscious. Hence lot of spiritual practices are to be undertaken to quell this. It is not easy nor it is a one day affair. Constant and consistent effort is needed on the part of the individual to loose his identity with the body. We have seen that rockets are fired to take the satellites beyond earth's atmosphere where there is no gravity. It requires tremendous power to push the rocket beyond the gravitational pull of earth. I would like to compare the effort to conquer the ego to the space shuttle or satellite which are propelled up by rockets to station them in space beyond the gravitational pull of earth. The scriptures prescribes some ways to achieve annihilation of the Ego mind. One is silent meditation on the Omnipresent one. The process of meditation commences with the mind but when you progress sufficiently, the mind is left out. When the rockets have served their propulsion, it comes away automatically. The mind too is essential until we reach the barrier. Afterwards, it is of no more use. Subsequent progress of meditation takes place automatically when the mind is jettisoned. This is the quintessence of "loosing one's identity'. After you lose even the awareness that you are meditating, then the blissful Self or Atma fills up the consciousness and one remain as the SELF. In the Upanishads, it is mentioned that 'the knower of ATMA become ATMA! Rest in next hub.
