Loving Your Guardian Angel

Updated on October 7, 2016

This article begins my series on "Empowering Youth". The purpose of this series is to highlight some of the beautiful truths of the Catholic Church which can help parents and educators grab the attention of Youth and help them fall in love with the Church. If they see how beautiful the Church is, they will be more empowered to live authentic lives of the Gospel.

Guardian Angels: The teaching on Guardian Angels is a beautiful teaching that exemplifies God's love for us--He loves us so much that he gives us our very own spiritual being to protect and guide us! When I was traveling my diocese for a Catechesis program, I would often find myself with a couple extra minutes at the end of a class time, or transitioning between activities. I would proceed to tell them about Guardian Angels, and inevitably their eyes would light up. Some things they always liked to know about Guardian Angels:

  • Everybody has one
  • They can protect you from danger
  • They act as your conscience
  • You can pray to them and learn their name!

It is this last point that seemed to be the most amazing to them, and when they would ask how, I would teach them this prayer:

Angel of God, My Guardian Dear
To whom God's love commits me here
Ever this day be at my side
To light and guard, rule, and guide.

I told them that if you say this prayer to your Angel every morning, that they may reveal their name to you. They always asked if I knew my Guardian Angel's name, and I would always respond, "Samuel". This was how I first developed my devotion to my Guardian Angel, and sometimes if the kids were older, I would tell them this story:

How I learned my Guardian Angels Name:

It was a seemingly normal night on the road, and my second night at the host family I was staying with that week. My team member had let me take the bedroom with the bed, and he offered to take the couch, because he liked falling asleep watching the TV if he could. That night I couldn't sleep, and I found myself with a desire to pray the St. Micheal Prayer. I said it, and then continued to say a rosary. It didn't help with sleeping, and God seemed to be testing me that night with patience. As the night wore on I received various hot and cold flashes, as well as a feeling that I should pray for Faith. When I did sleep, I had dreams of people I never met before, and giving them roses as a symbol of God's forgiveness for them. One time after one of these dreams I woke up to get a glass of water, only to find my teammate had left all the lights on, along with EWTN. I shut off all the electronics, got my drink, and went to bed. Later, I got up again to go to the bathroom (something that is very rare for me to do) and I saw that again the lights were on, and the tv had been turned on, but that channel changed. I continued to pray. Sometime during the early morning hours I got the urge to pray to my Guardian Angel, which is something I had never really done before. I prayed asking for guidance, sleep and protection, and as I did, the name Samuel came into my head. I asked my Angel if that was his name, and I got an overwhelming feeling of love and peace in my heart. That is how I became pretty sure my Angel's name was Samuel. I slept in fits for the rest of the night, but I was comforted by my new found friend.

Regardless of whether or not I told my personal story, the children I taught where always filled with an immediate sense of awe and love, and many would proceed that very to pray to their angel at Mass or even during recess. This is a beautiful gift we have been given, and it is a means by which we can evangelize to the younger generation. It takes only love of a single truth to delve deeper and discover the richness of the Church. I believe that this teaching may be especially comforting to youth and children who feel as if they don't have any other friends--their Angel was created to be their special best friend. Let us spread this joy and help others to realize that they all have guiding light sent by God to hold their hands on their journey to Christ. They are not alone!

Last night I asked my guardian angel to reveal his name if he was willing. Soon after the rather obscure name of Terence came into my head in a very vivid fashion. I answered that Terence cannot be the name of an Angel. I think I was actually doubting the name or maybe arguing with my angel. I told the angel that the next morning I would look up the name Terence to see what the meaning and history of the name was. If the name had a good meaning or was associated with a good person I would accept it as the name of my guardian.

Today I looked up the name and was astonished. The name Terence is Latin (Roman) in origin and comes from a well known Roman playwright that was known for his "wit" and "sophistication". Terence or Terentius is also the name of several Saints from the early Church including a Roman officer who was martyred. This Roman officer Terentius witnessed the martyrdom of St. Paul and St. Peter and later converted to Christianity.

I am in complete tears as I am writing this post since this happened today. I am completely blessed to now know the name of my guardian angel and to know that it is a very holy name.

Thank you for this article. I have a question. As a Christian I believe that God's Holy Spirit dwells within me so why would I need a guardian angel who is less powerful and less protective than the spirit of God Himself?

      Dave,

Thanks for the question, and for reading. I'm not really sure how to answer that, but I know that even in the Bible, Paul and many of his contemporaries thought of angels (both good and bad) that could work in their favor or against them. It's not a matter of what he NEED, yes, all we really need is God, but through his grace he gives us additional tools above and beyond himself that help strengthen our ability to receive his grace. We are weak creatures, and we have a tendency to overlook what he gives us. The guardian angel is just like another friend helping you live a Christian life.

rdlang: Now you have peaked my interest. You mention that God supplies us with (your words) "Additional tools, above and beyond Himself,". Name one tool that is above and beyond the scope of God and if there is such a tool, how could we possibly use it without God first teaching us through his Holy Spirit as to how to apply it in our lives.

I do understand about angels and welcome their assistance, but I fail to see or understand how any "Angel" or guardian angel as you put it is more superior to Almighty God's Holy Spirit, and is it not the Holy Spirit's duty to be our reminder and our teacher as the power of God serving or working with God in mankind here on earth.

I will take my query one step further now. According to Almighty God Our Father we were all originally created as spiritual beings. (see JEREMIAH: 1:5;) Our immortal spirit is in direct contact with God's Holy Spirit the moment we invite God and Christ into our lives. We are sealed with God's Holy Spirit and God's Holy Spirit, indwells us. I cannot fathom any angel to be superior to God's Holy spirit not in power nor in knowledge and wisdom, therefore what would the purpose of an angel serve, guardian or otherwise?

To the best of my knowledge, the only angel to try anything in my life is Lucifer, and even he has an extremely difficult time, for daily I don the Holy Armor of My Lord Jesus Christ. I do my best to live as best as I can in The Holy Word of The Almighty.

I did not mean to say any angel was "superior" to God's power, merely additional. I think we differ in fundamental concepts that probably won't be resolved by arguing this specific issue. God is supreme, no power is above Him, nor do humans "need" anything beyond his Spirit. However, though we don't need it, God provides us with gifts to help us better increase our ability to recognize and receive the grace he gives us. And I guarantee you, I'm sure lucifer is trying to do things, and if you ever sin, then he succeeds. But if you believe that Satan tempts, then surely you must believe that there forces battling him as well. Angels work WITH the spirit of God, not apart or above him.

rdlang: Please excuse me. I do not wish t appear adversarial. I have a tendency to take words "Literally" Just as I take the Holy Bible "Literally" accepting its words as God's Holy Word, and then accepting the translated meaning as shown by God's Holy Spirit. In other words, God's Holy Spirit presents the words to me, as He desires me to see and read them. I will never ever question God and His word, I do though question others, maybe I should treat other's writings as I wish my writings to be received, but Jesus has told us all to be on the alert.

Sorry if I do not always receive what you have written in the best of meanings.

      Dave,

No offense taken of course. Language, especially when its written and not heard, is of course always inadequate in some sense. I usually respect people with differing opinions unless they're not thought out. I agree, the line between being on alert and being charitable is a hard one to tread, but with Jesus we can learn to do it.

Thank you for reading, commenting, and trying to challenge me.
