MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?
ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI
My God, My God, Why have you forsaken me?
Cried the all bearing savior
Stripped of his majesty and glory
Naked, he hangs, horrific and deathly
What did thou thinkest, Lord
To cry thus, unto your own regal Father
Battalions of angels can thou summon
To thy aid, you choose gory death, rather
Is it really you who once paraded?
On a donkey, thou gentlest prince of peace
Met with cheers and smiles, with Kingly ardour
Now so shamefully portrayed, with twisted knees
Was it really because you could not stand a moment more?
Of thy excruciating torture, disgrace or cruelty
Did you despair of the All-Mighty, who could
Mercilessly, the sight of that horror bore
When women, looked down on, stood up for you
And wept, ne’er deserting, so filled with sorrow
And all those closest to you, fled away, disloyal
Couldn’t you bear the agony, their minds, so narrow
How could you cry so? You capable of repining
At the last moment? My noblest, most graceful Lord
What made you soul prick so, thought, parched of lip
You cried so loud, ever faithful to thy forsaking God
