The Three Fold Law, Magic and Wicca.
Within Wicca there is a principle known as the three fold law that applies not only to magic, but to every aspect of life. The three fold law states that whatever you send out into the universe will, be returned to you three fold (or three times greater). As this law applies to all aspects of life and not just magic it is important to think carefully about what you do in and wish for in your everyday life and to consider the intent behind those actions.
The three fold law is not directly literal in that you will receive three times everything you give out but that does not make it any less important to always keep in mind. It is intended to make people think more about the decisions they make and the possible consequences of these and to take full responsibility for the choices they make in their lives.
Every bit of good that is put out into the world, however large or small creates good and positive energy and connections. These go out into the universe and attract more good and positive energy. This energy is then returned to you bringing positivity, calm and happiness to your daily life. The same principle applies to negative actions. Negative thoughts and actions of any kind will attract more energy of the same. When the negative energy returns to the person and they experience bad luck, illness, loss of money or status and other negative events they may begin to feel even more unhappy and as if nothing they do goes right. This can lead to a downward spiral of negative thoughts and feelings that will only get worse as the negative energy around that person or situation grows.
In relation to the three fold law, Good and bad do not necessarily correspond to legal or even moral definitions we may hold of good and bad. For example, although something may be legally or even morally good in the eyes of some people, it may still cause harm and adversity to others and result in the creation of undesirable energy that is then sent out into the world.
In terms of magic as well as everyday life it is generally considered inappropriate to try to alter the will of another person. This is especially true of using magic to try and alter someone else’s decisions or to attempt to make them do something they normally wouldn’t. One example of this could be casing a love spell on a person to try and make them fall in love with you. However, there are times when this type of spell may be needed for example: to stop someone harassing you or having a negative effect on your life. In such a case a banishing spell will direct the person away from you and so remove the troubling energy. You can also cast the spell for the situation rather than naming the actual person. One way of doing this would be to cast a spell asking for existing negativity to be banished from your life.
It is perfectly normal to wish that people would make or not make the decisions that they do but it is important to remember that is only our view. We are not the person in question and do not know how they feel. We must respect that they are free to choose their paths for themselves. As good friends and family we can always be there to support and advise them and maybe offer healing to them, if needed.
The three fold law can be understood in the same way many people view karma. All of our actions and thoughts have results and repercussions so it is important to consider how we are affecting other people as well as ourselves.
What we say and do effects our thinking and how we view ourselves, those around us and the world as a whole. These thoughts and feelings drive our actions and in those in turn produce further thoughts, feelings and actions. If we feel angry this energy is sent out to the people around us and will create further negative thoughts and feelings about ourselves, our lives and being. This harmful pattern can affect us in how view ourselves and also how others see us – if someone appears to always be grumpy and unkind then people will believe that this is the type of person they are. They may then choose to avoid the person or be reluctant to help them, work with them or even be around them at all. The angry energy will impact on the people around us who then return it to us or pass it on to others with their own angry actions and feelings.
If you are able to change the way you behave and view circumstances in life and trying to keep a positive outlook you create good and positive energy which will spread around you. This energy not only benefits you and your life but also people around you and even the world as a whole. One small act of kindness can make a bigger difference than many people realise. These differences do not need to be grand to make have a great impact on the person in question. For example making a small monthly donation to a charity is likely to make very little difference to you but if everybody did the same imagine the difference it would make to those the charity help and support! In many cases the price of a cup of coffee or lunch out can make real and lasting changes in other people’s lives.
The three fold law should be carefully considered before performing any magic for yourself or someone else. It can be tempting for example to perform love spells to attract a particular person but that would be classified as trying to influence or control someone else’s free will. You must carefully think about your intent when performing magic and be clear in what you ask for, otherwise results may manifest in ways you had not thought of or want.
Many popular spells are concerned with basic human needs such as food and health as well as other desires such as love, money or popularity. Sympathetic magic is often used, meaning that symbolism is used to represent the desired outcome. This may be in the form of a direct representation such as coins or by using herbs, crystals, colours and other correspondents that are relevant to the particular intent and spell. For example pink candles or rose quartz crystals are often featured in love spells as the colour pink has strong associations with love and rose quartz is considered the stone of love and is connected to the heart chakra.
The Three Fold Law and Magic
When working with magic the three fold law acts as a way to set boundaries for yourself and keep this aspect of spiritual work positive. It may sometimes be tempting to use magic to hurt or get back at other people when we feel wronged but this type of action only causes more negativity to be produced. Just as one small good deed can have great positive effects, one small negative action can spiral and become much bigger and more harmful than had previously been intended.
The three fold law can be seen as a way to prevent irresponsible behaviour. Followers of some traditions believe that the three fold law does not just apply to this life, but that our actions here and now will be carried over into our next and successive lives. Although it may appear bad deeds have been missed and ‘gotten away with’ perhaps it is just that any repercussions for that person are yet to come.
In line with the three fold law and the Wicca rede,’ an it harm none, do what ye will’, magic should never be used to harm, injure or control others. If another person is attempting to or is causing you harm magic can be used to protect yourself, family, friends or home rather than in the negative sense of returning the harm.
Some people believe it is wrong to use magic to gain money, for example by performing spells and rituals for payment. One reason for this is because money can quickly and easily become a focus and controlling aspect for some people. In a lot of cases this leads to selfish and otherwise negative behaviours.
If you wish to have more money, a good luck, employment or prosperity spell may be more appropriate or perhaps one that helps to boost our confidence in our abilities, jobs or studies so that we may go on to earn more money by honest means. Magic can be used for personal gain as long as no harm is caused. Care must be taken that these spells are not carried out for selfish reasons or for those related to greed or because of a want to take from others. Magic should be used where there is a need rather than just a want for something. It is a wise choice to include a line such as ‘an it harm none, mote it be’ or similar to the end of spells and other work to ensure that there will be only good and your wanted affects rather than your wish folding out in some unexpected and possibly undesirable or harmful way.
