Mantra Meditation

Updated on April 14, 2009

Padhmasana SHIVA

The GOAL of meditation is to attain a thoughtless state.

A state in which one could realize Shiva and Shakthi in unison.

Mantras are energy-based sounds

Mantra is vibration of sounds that facilitates one to attain this state. These sounds that does not mean anything is just a tool to attain the state of "FULL CONSIOUSNESS and BLISS" or Enlightenment.

These sounds initialed with HamSa Mantra (Oum or Om) becomes powerful.

One such mantra is:

Oum Saoum
Shreem Hreem Kleem
Glaum Saoum NaMaHa.

Chanting this sounds and allowing that sound to vibrate from the base of the spine to the crown of the skull, seated in PadMaSaNa (Seated Crossed leg) ,as seen in above shiva's image, will help one to feel the bliss and be in eternal consciousness.

Some easier MANTRA for Shiva, which in 4 stages.

1st stage : OM Na Ma Shi Va Ya
2nd stage : OM Shi Va Ya Na Ma
3rd stage : OM Shi Va Ya Shi Va
4th stage : Shi Va Shi Va (each stage for 12 minutes)

Doing shiva mantra meditation for 48 minutes i.e., 24 minutes before and 24 minutes after SUNSET on 13th Day from New Moon and Full Moon which is Called SHIVA’s time.

If that 13 day is MONDAY /  SATURDAY it is more auspicious.

It is belived that Continuous 120 Meditation session during this time gives limitless benefits and salvation.

Fasting on this day from sunrise and having dinner after meditation secession will be of immense help for deeper meditation benefits. When hungry eating fruits like banana, vegetables cucumber and fistful of nuts like peanuts / seeds like sunflower seeds is allowed.

Once a YEAR on 13th night/14th day from new moon of the month of February is the most auspicious time for this mantra. This day i.e., once a year continuing the fast through the night till the 14th day morning and NOT SLEEPING through the night will be of immense benefit. One should make sure the 14 day will tiresome so there should be no intense activity during that daytime.

Again 13th night of the new moon, during the month of feb / march most auspicious  day.

Another Astotramantra eight syllable for Vishnu.

Om Na Mo Na Ra Ya Na Ya.

Similarly like Shiva MANTRA this Vishnu MANTRA can be meditated on eleventh lunar day 11th day from NEW / FULL Moon day is spiritually beneficial day for this MANTRA. Observing fast and meditating from sunset on the 10th day to 48 minutes after sunrise on the 12th day.

SEED MANTRA. Like a small ACORN seed germinate when it finds access to adequate water, sunlight and soil nutrients and grow into an enormous tree, these sound when used appropriately, in chanting creates condusive circumstance to manifest thought.

2 DUM : Protection.
5 SHREEM : Contentment and Satisfaction with Wealth.
6 AIM : Knowledge.
7 KLEEM : Contentment and Satisfaction with Desire and Senses.
8 HOOM : Valor.
9 GAM : Removing OBSTACLES
10 GLAUM : Luster or Brilliance.
11 KSHRAUM : Ferociousness.

The science of Mantra is very complex.

In the modern world, the power of gross sound vibration is just beginning to be utilized in physical therapy, and its potential is being tapped in other fields.

The ancient Indian sages had this sophistication thousands of years ago. They have used sound in its gross and subtle states to penetrate the planes of human consciousness and to reach the divine vibration that is the experience of God.

Beginning in OM and dissolving in OM, the Mantra comes full cycle.

Clearly, beautifully explained. Thank you! I am a musician who finds Sanskrit mantras to be powerful & moving, and so I wrote a song around the 'Saravana' mantra, and just posted it on YouTube.

      I hope you enjoy it!
