Meditation is beyond Mind!

Updated on April 21, 2015

unwind the mind!

Mind has no role to play in real meditation!

We can never understand the working of human mind. Psychology investigates human mind and emotions to certain extent but it has no capacity to know the secrets behind the human mind. Sri Sathya Saibaba has dealt on the subject extensively and revealed many truths behind the illusory mind.

Let us investigate what the mind consists of, or the reality of thoughts. Yes thoughts are contained in human mind. Without thoughts, there is no mind at all. The same thoughts become desires, resolutions, judgements, opinions and emotions as well as feelings. If you want to investigate the mind, stand aloof from the thought process and just observe it as a mute witness.

Each thought has the capacity to drag the man into actions, stimulating first a desire or resolution. Once a thought appears, we are easily drawn into its stratagems! Hence I said in the previous para to stand aloof and watch the mind! Many may feel, it is difficult to watch the thoughts. No, everyone can practice observing their thoughts without actually getting involved into it. A young man who happens to see a charming girl is naturally got attracted. First, the eyes watch the form of the girl and judge her and form an opinion that she must be befriended. When the thought about her arises, do not follow the thought or get entangled into it. Simply observe it without any interest.

This is possible with practice. When we learn to drive two wheelers, initially, it may seem risky. You will find it difficult to balance it. But, after faltering number of times, you will develop courage slowly and after a week of training, you will gain a little confidence to drive it yourself. First one has to practice it in open ground. Subsequently, you can drive it in narrow lanes too. Likewise, one can train up the mind to become an observing mind rather than an active mind.

None can control the mind or thoughts outright. Thoughts seem to arise involuntarily without any effort on our part. The secret is ‘food and environment are conducive to thoughts or a minute part of the food becomes thought patterns. We might have watched mothers feeding their children coaxing them in many ways. But the child is naughty. It will run hither and thither. The mother has to run behind. So long as the mother pursues the baby, it will run. Let the mother stop pursuing. The child will become panicky and rush to the mother crying. This is how we have to train the mind. Stop following the thoughts. Simply keep quiet. Let any thought arise. Never relent. Just witness them without getting involved. Over a period of time, the rush of thoughts will subside. This is the psychology of the mind. So long as we pursue it, it will run madly. Stop pursuing the thoughts. It will become docile!

The term mind control is a misnomer. None can control it. It will rise with more fury. Just watch it. This is the best way to slow the thoughts. We often hear about Yoga and meditation. Meditation is really going beyond the mind and thoughts. Focusing exclusively on higher power is meditation. Mind has nothing to do in meditation. In fact, mind is an obstruction in meditation. When one sits in meditation, all kind of mad thoughts rush with greater fury since the mind dislikes playing with fire. Yes, meditation is like fire purifying our inner impulses and habits. But it is a long process. First of all do not anticipate any results.

Results pertain to worldly life and achievements. Results have no relevance in spiritual vocabulary since it is a ‘thoughtless state, which is the final result. How any thought can arise and true meditation won’t admit any thoughts!

Nowadays, we find many people are conducting classes for teaching meditation. Meditation is the function of inner man and none can teach us the same except our own self. What we learn in Yoga and meditation classes is really posture and other physical spade works. One has to travel alone in the spiritual field. Of course, there are preceptors in the true sense who will warn us about the path and the pitfalls. They had already travelled in the path and achieved. For the sake of guiding the ignorant worldly people, they teach the fundamentals. Once you learn the fundamentals, you have to travel alone in the path of spirituality. Of course, the self will guide you in this task!

The Chakras in spinal column!
