Mormonism 101: What's a Mormon?

Updated on November 16, 2014

I'm a Mormon

I'm sure most of you have seen the "I'm a Mormon" commercials at least once, and with all the political hype that was going on during the elections, the question on most people's minds right now is probably something like: "What the heck is all this Mormonism stuff?"

Well, hopefully this Hub can clear some of the frequent questions, and dispel the rumors and false accusations that are out there.

The Name Mormon

Is a nickname that comes from The Book of Mormon, which is another volume of Holy Scripture that, like the Bible, testifies and teaches of Christ. It is another witness of Jesus Christ, and when used in companionship with the Bible, offers a deeper understanding, and clearer perspective of his Gospel.

Against common belief, there is no such thing as "A demon named moron"; rather the name was given from mobsters and persecutors of the early saints

Mormonism Fact: The LDS Church does NOT replace the Bible with the Book of Mormon, nor is the Book of Mormon considered a "Mormon Bible"

Who Are Mormons?

Most have heard the name...

What is your perception of Mormons?

See results

They're All Around!

You're next door neighbor, the cashier at the grocery store you just went to, the mechanic who fixed your car even! Yes, we mormons are every day people, just like you. That's right, we actually have lives. Big surprise, huh? So, what are the Mormonisms that set us apart from the rest of the Normalisms? Honestly I don't even think we're that Differentism, except we believe:

In the Word of Wisdom (Don't drink, smoke,do drugs, drink coffee and/or tea, or anything else that is harmful to the body)

Don't have sex before marriage

Men are married to one wife (ITS TRUE!)

Marriage is between one man and one woman

The Family is the most essential part of God's plan for us on Earth

Not to gamble or bet

In a living prophet, AND heed to councils and guidance of prophets passed (Including Old and New Testament prophets. YES, we DO read from the Bible! KJV to be exact)

Mormonism Fact:
If you currently do opposite any of the above mentioned, you are NOT considered damned to Hell. Everybody has weaknesses, we are all sinners in this life. EVERYBODY is eligible to repent, and strive to correct our weaknesses. "I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them." - Ether 12:27

So, what about Sister Wives and Polygamy?

Every Church has its Radicals

Which just happens to be the case with the FLDS. When the law came out banning polygamy, the church respected it and also came out with a creed denouncing the practice. Well, some people didn't want to quit, so they made their own group and called it The Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints, along with that, they kept the name "Mormon", which now adds to the confusion and mis-understanding in the relation of the FLDS and the LDS faith

Mormonism Fact: The Official Declaration 1 (Denouncing the practice of Polygamy) was released October 6, 1890 as has been in effect ever since

The Crazy Rumors

I've heard a lot of absurd things about Mormon belief. "Magical and/or fireproof underwear", "A lizard wrote the scriptures", "Jesus isn't the Son of God" "We came from an alien planet". It seems all the impossible to believe things which are false, end up being what we get labelled with, while the believable things somehow never surface...

Before I lose you all with the in-depth doctrine, lets just focus on the basics, shall we?

We believe Jesus is the literal son of God and Mary

We believe we are all spirit children of God sent from Heaven to Earth to be tested

We believe man will be punished for his own sins, and not Adam's transgressions

We believe in Faith AND Works; works NOT being defined as a checklist amount of things to do guarantee a place in Heaven

We celebrate all holidays (including Birthdays)

A lizard/salamander was NOT responsible for the creation of the Book of Mormon

The "stone in a hat" is derived from Hiram Page's experience, in which he was deceived by Satan

(These are only the ones I could think of off the top of my head, but this article also helps clarify some of the rumors [mostly those pertaining to Alvin Smith], their origins and obvious mistakes. If you have any other questions, or know of some crazy rumors you'd like defined, please post them in the comments.)
