My View on whether GOD has a sense of humor or not

Updated on January 1, 2012

I used to think GOD had a sense of humor. But the more I learn, the more HE teaches me, the more I realize HE does not. Just because GOD gave man a sense of humor does not mean HE HIMSELF has a sense of humor. Nowhere in the bible is there evidence of a sense of humor. GOD's dealings with man are deadly serious. souls are at stake...nothing to laugh about there. Man made gods have a sense of humor, and are often ill tempered and mischievous, playing pranks on humans and doing other things on them for their amusement. GOD does not need to be amused. Our sin and certainly our suffering is not a source of amusement to HIM. HE teaches us not to laugh at another man's why would HE? Throughout the bible, HE had to punish people...But HE neither enjoyed it nor derived amusement from it. No more than a parent does when punishing a child they love.

Ezekiel 33:11...KJV...Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

Christians like to tell jokes concerning me that is being disrespectful of HIM and even mocking HIM. Just because you see humor in something does not mean GOD does. GOD does not see humor in disobedience to HIS commandments, or seeing how far you can stretch their meanings. GOD is not man.

Isaiah 55:8,9...KJV...8For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

9For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

There are many times in our lives when GOD allows things to happen, and we see humor in does not mean that GOD did it on purpose to make us more than the boy who went to push a glass door open only to discover there was no glass in the door and so fell through it intended to make those watching laugh. Why do people laugh at others when they trip, slip, bump their get the idea? It starts from infancy. My little nephew would go into a fit of giggles whenever my grandfather would walk through a doorway and pretend to slam into the door frame. I do know that GOD gave us laughter just like crying because both are healing. GOD grieves. HE experiences joy. But HIS sorrow and HIS joy are so much deeper and purer than we can ever begin to comprehend, and for reasons we will never fully understand. We as humans give GOD very little to be happy about. I do know that every time a soul is saved there is great rejoicing in heaven.

I do not believe GOD has a sense of least not one we can comprehend.

we each of us have a right to believe what we will. yes GOD is perfectly balanced...HE is perfection. there are those who do not believe GOD has courage...that HE is courage. GOD may have BE joy or humor...but when it comes to man...I do not believe HE sees anything funny. HE pleads with man to "come, let us reason together..." HE pleads with man to turn away from sin and accept HIM and HIS gift. HE does not desire that any should be lost, but it grieves HIM because so many choose evil over good. man has never done the right thing...he is stiff necked and rebellious...if GOD tells us not to laugh at another mans calamity, why would you think HE would? He is not a man made god who delights in our suffering. the only thing that brings great rejoicing is when a lost soul is saved. also when i said that we are told about GOD in HIS Word...i mean we are taught who GOD is from the Holy our relationship grows and our faith grows, GOD HIMSELF teaches us more and more of who HE is, HIS nature and who we are.

Interesting hub. I do agree that God at the very least has a very serious side. You see it all throughout scripture. I get a little uncomfortable though when humans seem to put God in a box. It sounds like you're saying that God has given us every detail about who He is in the pages of the Bible. So if you can't see God's sense of humor in the Bible then He must not have one. But I just don't think that's reasonable. Imagine how complex an infinite God must be. Think about how much of the life of Jesus was never actually written down for us. We were given a small snippet of the detail that we'd like to have. There really is no verse that specifically confirms or denies the "no sense of humor" claim, so it's really just conjecture. Interesting conjecture, but still conjecture. In my opinion, the Bible shows God to be a God of incredible balance. His character is a perfect balance of justice and mercy. Jesus was perfectly both God and man. I believe there is perfect joy, perfect peace, and perfect love in a perfect God. I would guess that there's an occasional perfect fit of laughter in there as well. But that's just a guess. We're all just guessing on this particular topic. That's my opinion.

thank you growingdeeper for stopping by to read this hub. unfortunately, i must disagree with you. i read your hub, and i am afraid i see no humor whatsoever in GODs actions in the examples you gave. whatever the case may be, we will all know the truth of the matter in the end. in the meantime, all we can do is study HIS word and ask for HIS guidance in all matters, and do our best to live in complete obedience to HIM. that is the important thing.

You will still probably disagree with me, but I just ask you to check out my Hub on this same topic. I think there are instances where God certainly uses humor in relating to mankind including in His Word. Does He think it is funny to sin against Him, absolutely not. But, I do believe that He understands us (He did create us with a sense of humor) and relates to us in many different ways including some humorous ones.

I'd tend to agree with you. He's a serious God.
