My Momma Said
Isaiah 66:13 (NIV)
As a mother comforts her child,
so will I comfort you;
and you will be comforted over Jerusalem."
1 Corinthians 13:4 (NIV)
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
(WHAT A MOTHER WOULD SAY)
I GAVE YOU LIFE BUT CANNOT LIVE IT FOR YOU
I CAN TEACH YOU THINGS BUT I CANNOT MAKE YOU LEARN.
I CAN GIVE YOU DIRECTIONS BUT I CANNOT LEAD YOU THERE
I CAN TAKE YOU TO CHURCH BUT I CANNOT MAKE YOU BELIEVE
I CAN TEACH YOU RIGHT FROM WRONG BUT I CANNOT ALWAYS DECIDE FOR YOU
I CAN OFFER YOU ADVICE BUT I CANNOT ACCEPT IT FOR YOU
I CAN TEACH YOU TO SHARE BUT I CANNOT MAKE YOU UNSELFISH
I CAN TEACH YOU RESPECT BUT I CANNOT FORCE YOU TO SHOW HONOR
I CAN ADVISE YOU ABOUT FRIENDS BUT CANNOT CHOOSE THEM FOR YOU
I CAN ADVISE YOU ABOUT SEX BUT I CANNOT KEEP YOU PURE
I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT DRINKS BUT I CAN’T SAY “NO” FOR YOU
I CAN WARN YOU ABOUT DRUGS BUT I CAN’T PREVENT YOU FROM USING
I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT LOFTY GOALS BUT I CAN’T ACHIEVE THEM FOR YOU.
I CAN TEACH YOU KINDNESS BUT I CAN’T FORCE YOU TO BE GRACIOUS.
I CAN WARN YOU ABOUT SINS BUT I CANNOT MAKE YOU MORAL.
I CAN LOVE YOU AS A CHILD BUT I CANT PLACE YOU IN GODS FAMILY.
I CAN PRAY FOR YOU BUT I CANNOT MAKE YOU WALK WITH GOD.
I CAN TEACH YOU ABOUT GOD BUT I CANNOT MAKE GOD YOUR LORD.
I CAN TELL YOU HOW TO LIVE BUT I CANNOT GIVE YOU ETERNAL LIFE.
I CAN LOVE YOU WITH UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, ALL OF MY LIFE AND I WILL ALWAYS..
Is this not, so unlike our Father’s love for us in Heaven. He says “I will never leave you or forsake you” Hebrews 13:5
In fact just as our mother took care of our needs, he is there to take care of hers. When we cry out, our mother would come to our aid, as will our Lord.
When we fall down, our mother is there to pick us up and heal our wounds, as will our Lord.
Could we just picture our mother as G-d?
How many have heard, “I brought you into this world and I can take you out”, or this one, “if you don’t have anything good to say, keep it to yourself.”
What authority is spoken in those two statements. Those phrases are something the LORD has said to us, true, not in those exact words, yet he has said them.
He has told us how we were formed from the dust, then he breathed the life into us and then, to the earth we will return and our spirits will return to him Genesis 3:19 and Ecclesiastes 12:7
Genesis 3:19 (New International Version)
19 By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return."
Ecclesiastes 12:7 (New International Version)
7 and the dust returns to the ground it came from,
and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
How much do we appreciate our mother? How often do we express that love? When, was the last time we had conversation?
Do you know what this sounds like to me? It sounds like the same questions we should ask ourselves daily, not only about our relationship with our mother, but our relationship with G-d.
If the answer to any of those questions is “I’m not sure, or “I can’t remember” we need to pickup that phone, or we need to get on our knees, some of us are just so busy, we know they will understand.
Understand yes, be happy with your actions, no. Our mothers gave of themselves tirelessly, without payment and most times without praise. Their payment was in watching their child smile and watching them accomplish goals.
Moms, they are amazing and without them, I could not be here today.
Caring for us and loving us, then letting us step out into this world on our own, even though you feel you must rush after us, yet you know that in order for us to mature, you must let go of us fully and pray we won’t stumble.
The pain you bore us through, may only compare to that pain of watching us grow, knowing we will make mistakes. Then, there you are, helping to lift us up out of our pit of despair, like our G-d.
Mom, how is it, you found the strength to help nurse us, when you were sick as well? Where does your strength come from, could it be from the LORD, in scripture it says:
2 Samuel 22:33 (New International Version)
It is God who arms me with strength
and makes my way perfect. Also in Psalm 18:32
This is my mother, is this not your mom as well, of course it is
A mother is a shepherd, she watches over her flock and they know her voice. Calm and loving, she is also fearless and unmoved by deceitful persons.
To my mother, I owe so much and can only repay so little.
To my LORD, whom my mother had me Christened in, I shall never be able to repay at all.
Now, because of my mother, I stand before you a man who loves his mother, not because of what she gave him and he did not even deserve it. But because of what she did not give him when he did deserve it
