Not in there

Updated on August 28, 2012

It is not in the Bible

"God helps those who cannot help themselves and he helps those who try to help others, but he does not in any beatitude help those who think they can help themselves — an often ungodly and antisocial conception." Bruner

There is a popular saying of arrogant men and women:” God helps those who help themselves.” Nowhere will you find that in the Bible. To help yourself is to indicate that all the credit goes to you and you depend upon your own strength and wisdom. God is just along for the ride. That is arrogant and wrong.

If by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace. Romans 11:6

Now, you will find it in the Bible DEPEND upon God.

It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. Romans 5:16

That does not give you contra blanche to just sit on your lazy buts and expect God to be your slave that every time you snap your fingers, He will give you your every desire either.

Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense Proverbs 12:11

Are you having problems in your marriage? Don’t just sit there and whine for God to help you, take action. Go to a marriage councilor; listen to programs like focus on the family. It is THEN that God will help you.

Canada the government will pay for it while you are on unemployment, check to see what programs are available to you. Do volunteer work many times that is where you will meet contacts, by Gods grace.

So it is two pronged. Yes depend upon God to guide you, but you too must take action as God guide you.

Prayer: Please Jehovah Jireh (God our provider) bless me with Your divine guidance to get the help I need with _______ (fill in the blank). As well my beloved give me the strength to take that first step to take action on Your guidance. I ask this oh loving one in the name of our great Sheppard Jesus Christ. Amen.

May the sunshine of Jesus’ sweet love bless you today and every day.

If you notice I practice the proper use of paragraphs for differant points. I do not notice that in your comment. I can see where your comment should have been in three parapgraphs. What does that say about your pofessionalism?

My pastor jests about writing the "Good Book" in which he will put everything that people think is from the Bible and that sounds really good and spiritual, but really isn't.

I hear this phrase and wonder how they can perceive such a view on life and about God. Yes, we must actively do something about our problems and situations, but depending on God's Word and guidiance. Thanks for pointing this out.

Teacher Joe, I love what you write about, it is right from the heart and it is true. However, if you really are a teacher, could you please check your hubs for spelling before posting them? Both as professionals and as Christians we need them to be the best that they can be.

      Hi Sherri.

Unfortunatly what you say is true.

I agree; this is a common misconception. Our society holds those who are "self-made" in high esteem--not God. God wants us to lean on him. We can do nothing without God. It is a partnership.
